Problems with Multiple User Startup
« on: September 29, 2003, 08:36:31 am »
Hi,

I have a small problem at this time. I am using 4.5 Hal free version on a windows xp home with 512 mb ram and 1.944ghz cpu. well my problem is this.

I used to just use the computer myself, one account admin priveleged, but I have added a couple new accounts. when they try to long on the Hal installer starts and install Hal. It does this every time they log on. logon...installer runs, log off, log on...installer runs again. Is there any way to stop this from happening. the accounts they use are limited, no admin priveleges.

the only way I could stop it was to use msconfig and find the installer app and delete it. It resides in the Windows/Installer folder which is normally a hidden folder. I deleted the file and now it does not try to install every time. but now hal will not load at logon any more you must start him from all programs menu.

Another problem is that it will not allow the other users to change the settings and save the changes. It all ways resets back to the defaults when it was first installed on the admin account. Ie;logon-make option changes hit apply. Log off. Log on start hall check options they are back to the defaults. why?

Can someone Help me with this one. Hal used to start on logon but doesnt anymore. I have tried to choose start when windows start hit apply then ok. log off, then log on no Hal?

Another wierd coincedence is that the icon for hal is missing on the other accounts. you can see the folder in the all program menu, open folder and it shows the deafult icon as if no icon was chosen for the app. Not the Hal 4.5 Icon on the admin account. why is this?

well enough for now. I will check back later, please someone help me if you can.

Hello,

Just a little update on my problem.

I got Hal to start automaticly, it was still disabled in the msconfig. But now I get the Hal was shut down improperly error do you want to reconfig. I click no and Hal starts fine.

Hal still wont allow the other users to save their settings though. I dont know why?

I had to delete the shortcuts and make new ones in the start up folder for the icons to show up again. dont know why they disapeared in the first place. But I got that one fixed.

Any help on the others will be apreaciated.

I might offer a suggestion here... since I run W2000 server... you might try logging in under a non-admin account then install hal... see if that helps... I'm thinking the normal user doesn't have the same priv. that the admin account has...

Any ways, if that helps great, if not, then I ain't gotta clue...

HI, Larry.

The problem was that It would try to install itself every time the normal account user signed on, it would install and start up fine. But when they tried to change their settings it would not save them. They would logoff and log back on again. Hal would reinstall again. Still with the default settings again. It would not save the settings they chose.
