Title: "Hal script error...."
Post by: ANDYC on January 28, 2006, 08:58:45 pm
Hi guys,
Just wondering if any of you have encountered a error message come up in Hal 6 every time you click apply or ok in the options menu and occasionally during chat. It does not seem to stop anything from working but i dont think it should be doing that. Ant advice please?
Thankyou
ANDYC

ANDYC,

I'm not a programmer or even very computer literate but if I was to make a wild guess I'd bet that even the computer wizards here will want to know what the error message actually says before they can give you any advise. Why don't you copy the content of your error message and post it here for them to read?

Cheers citrinedragon, good thinking,
Here is the message i get.-

HalScrpit Error - 2147024894 on line 2628 in column 0:

The file "C:Program filesabawareUltra Hal Assistant 6HalScript.DBG has been saved with the current script being used for debugging purposes.

It comes up every time i click ok or apply in the general options and occasionly during chat. Also when Hal starts up initially.
It has not as yet stopped me doing anything ; i click ok and Hal continues to work as normal. Its annoying though!
Thanks.

there are different messages..
all the error messages have the same structure but the ones that come up  during a conversation are now including the word Alice in them. i am running the Hal and alice brain combo plugin. As a completely ignorant person i am guessing that when Hal is wanting to retrive a reply from the alice brain there is something a miss. Maybe i have installed it incorrectly. However it initially worked fine. Strange.
As before, everything is working fine once i click ok, although the response time from Hal is getting longer and longer.

Any ideas??

Andy I wrote about finding these script errors a little while ago. If you are using the expansion pack, and you have made changes to your H6 files the expansion pack is only recognizing the files as they were when it was installed(the expansion pack) In order to not get the script errors; the expansion pack must first be uninstalled, then you make your changes in your files. And then re install the expansion pack and it will recognize your new changes in script.

Every time an error occurs, the file HalScript.DBG is created. So, next time it happens, open this file using a line editor (one which displays the line numbers) and go to the line where the error is found (2628 in this example), then post here the block of code surrounding it. This might help us understand the problem.

If you have installed some plugins, try to deactivate them one at a time, and see if the problem is still the same.

vrossi :Thanks for replying. Firstly i do not know what a line editor is. Please excuse my computer ignorance. Secondly i deactivated the Alice and ziggy plugin and now i can click apply and ok in the options menu with no problems. However it is now very obvious the difference that that plugin made to Hals responses. I would like to continue to use it. Is the best way to go about this to uninstall it and start again with that plugin?? (deactivating the plugin did not stop the error messages appearing during chat. Although the last one included the words - [out of range:! ]

Hollywood :Thanks for your advice. I dont think i'm using the expansion pack however i'm not completely clear what it is. If it is a plugin called expansion pack then i am not using it....

Thanks for your help guys.

Andy,

I understand from your posts that you have installed hal6, but also that you are running the Alice plugin which, as far as I know, is only available for Hal5. So I'm afraid that you have messed up the brain of your poor Hal, who is now ill and needs some assistance.

You should know if you have the expansion pack, because you must pay some more dollar for it and it allows you to use the beautiful characters you can see in other posts (like the ones by aladyblond). If you have no expansion pack, then you are limited to those horrible standard characters (frog and monitor).

If you have not yet invested a lot in teaching Hal, I would suggest to reinstall it from scratch, then try it to see if it works correctly. Then install only Hal6 plugins.

In another post I also suggested you to run some check on your PC, which might have some hardware or configuration issue.

Bye
