« on: December 16, 2007, 01:10:07 pm »
Hello Haptek experts. One of my clients is interested in putting a custom people putty head on top of the female Haptek torso model from http://www.haptek.com/products/models/models_torso.shtml

Has anyone been able to do this, if so could you share a few pointers with me? Thanks.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal becomes a politician: AskTheCandidates2008.com
« on: December 11, 2007, 11:50:11 pm »
In order to promote democracy in this country and Zabaware technology at the same time, I've been working on this site for the past week: www.askthecandidates2008.com

I've been loading quotes from presidential debates and interviews into Hal's brain. Each US presidential candidate has their own mini Hal brain loaded with real quotes and when you ask a question, all the candidates try to respond to your question. It is only allowed to use a real quote to answer, so sometimes the candidates won't respond or may respond off-topic if no on-topic quote is found.

The web page is about 2/3 finished, I still have a lot more source data to load into the brains and still have to program the voting system, suggest a quote link, and some minor graphics and formatting issues. But please try it and give me your feedback before the "official" launch of the site next week.

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / WordNet Antonym & Meronym Plug-in
« on: November 07, 2007, 05:30:53 pm »
Here is a plug-in that will let the user ask Hal what the opposite of something is (antonym) or what something is made of (meronym). For example you can ask Hal "What is the opposite of cold?" or "What is a computer made of?" or "What's found in a car?"  A small bug in the Hal 6.1 DLL prevents Hal from correctly answering some words which do actually exist in WordNet. Most words work and the bug will be fixed in Hal 6.2.

To install, just download and save the wordnet.uhp in Hal's program folder (usually c:\program files\zabaware\ultra hal assistant 6) and then go into Hal's options, Brain section, and check "WordNet Antonym & Meronym" under additional brain plug-ins.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Loebner 2007 Competition - Please Help Teach Hal
« on: August 21, 2007, 06:03:48 pm »
Hal is 1 of 3 bots competing in the Loebner 2007 Competition for Artificial Intelligence on October 21, 2007, along with:
Code: [Select]
Rollo Carpenter - (Icogno Ltd.) www.jabberwacky.com
Noah Duncan. (self)
Last year Hal placed 2nd place, with Jabberwacky taking 1st. See http://loebner.net/Prizef/2006_Contest/loebner-prize-2006.html for transcripts. Hal's default brain isn't programmed to pretend to be a human fooling a judge into thinking they are talking to a human.

I am requesteing help from fellow forum members teaching Hal for this competition. Hal needs a "story", a personal background of his life so that he may mention this during the competition if judges ask. I have put up an AIM Bot on the screen name HalLoebner2007 who is online and willing to learn. Please just IM this bot and talk with it.

I would like Hal to pretend that his name is Steve, that he is 31 years old (born 5/12/1976), that he lives in New York City, that he works as a network technician, that he is currently in Hugh Loebners apartment participating as a human confederate in the Loebner Competition. Based on this short background, please talk to HalLoebner2007 and teach him about himself, about New York City, about his job being a network technician, and anything else you think would be helpful.

Basically judges will be talking with 6 unknown entities through a standard interface. Judges will start the conversation and can pretty much say anything they want for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes they must determine whether the entity they talked to was a human or computer, and if it was a computer to rank them in comparison to the other 2 computers. So in order to do better in this competition it will help if Hal can talk about his personal life a little bit if asked. Any help teaching Hal will be greatly appreciated.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Known ISPs that block Zabaware.com email
« on: July 25, 2007, 08:49:57 am »
A couple months ago, spammers have used a function on Zabaware's shopping cart system called "share this page with a friend" to send massive amounts of spam since it allowed custom messages to be written. I caught it after a few weeks and removed that function, but in the mean time Zabaware.com became blacklisted on many mail servers. I contacted many isps and blacklist keepers to get zabaware removed, but a few ISPS still block Zabaware. The ones I know of right now include:

sbcglobal.net
efn.org

If your ISP is on this list, you cannot receive any email replies from me, the Zabaware forum, or the Zabaware shopping cart. Your ISP blocks it. Please contact them and ask them to unblock zabaware's email server 66.36.243.63 as they'll be more likely to listen to a customer than me.

I'm working with a client who is interested in having a people putty character have a more evident and sustained smile with teeth showing and I've been trying to play with all the setswitches in a HAP file to acheive this without much luck. It seems to cycle between showing teeth and not showing teeth but I can't get it to sustain the teethy smile longer. Does anyone have experience with this or ideas on how to accomplish this?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Zabaware emails blocked
« on: June 19, 2007, 11:19:10 am »
It has come to my attention that Zabaware.com emails are being blocked by many ISPs who use certain blacklists to block spam. The zabaware.com shopping cart had a "send this page" to a friend function where someone could email a link and add their own message to a friend. Some spammers wrote automated programs to take advantage of this and send their own spam via zabaware.com, thus zabaware.com is now blocked by many ISPs. I have removed the offending scripts, but it will take some time to get unblocked by many ISPs. I appologize for the many customers who have not received any reply to their emails these past couple weeks.

In addition to trying to remove these blocks, I will modify this forum over the next couple of days to allow members to send me private messages for customer support issues you do not wish to make public.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / New Forum / Terms of Service
« on: June 06, 2007, 09:59:54 pm »
This forum community is growing fairly quickly with today setting a record of 92 users logged in at the same time. To cut down on some congestion, a new forum has been added called "Share Conversations, Experiences, Graphics" and some topics have been moved there.
Use this forum to share your personal experiences with Hal such as interesting conversation snippets and screenshots and videos of your characters.

Also if you click on the "FAQ" link in the forum menu or register for a new account you will notice new Terms of Service as some people have asked for it and the increasing activity on the forum will require increased moderation.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / White Box Robotics & 914 PC Bot
« on: May 08, 2007, 04:50:17 pm »
Zabaware and White Box Robotics have begun discussion about integrating Ultra Hal Assistant with their 914 PC Bot. White Box Robotics are pioneers of PC-based robotics. Their 914 PC Bot is basically a computer on wheels, it uses standard interchangeable computer components and software and is very customizable (just like Hal). Since it is a PC, Ultra Hal already runs just fine on it out of the box. Work will be done to more closely integrate some of the robot’s functionality with Hal such as the ability to navigate and interface with the webcam.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Ultra Hal Assistant 6.1 RC4
« on: April 25, 2007, 01:39:22 am »
Well it seems RC3 wasn't the last one. Here is the fourth and hopefully final release candidate of Ultra Hal Assistant 6.1: http://www.zabaware.com/download/hal61.zip  It is version 6.1.38. This release candidate is still a test version, so download at your own risk and  let me know of any bugs you find. If no major issues are found, this will become the official 6.1 release. RC4 fixes some speech recognition issues and auto-idle issues found in RC3.

What's new in Hal 6.1 since Hal 6.0:
  • New advanced learn from text/learn from clipboard wizard added to hal brain editor. Works especially well on wikipedia articles.
  • Compatibiliy with Windows Vista as Hal 6.0 does not work normally in Vista, also better support for XP under limited user access
  • Unlimited and automatic reactivations on the same hardware configuration in event of license corruption, should reduce many license support issues
  • In addition to Hal's current skinable interface, an option was added to let Hal use a standard OS Window with whatever the standard Windows theme is.
  • Added "Select All" and "Deselect All" button to plug-in selector
  • Direct method to get support from inside Hal in event of license issue, streamlined on my end also, will improve my turnaround time in getting back to customers with licensing issues
  • When using speech recognition, the microphone automatically mutes when Hal is speaking and unmutes when Hal is finished. Now works in all supported graphics engines (msagent, haptek, legacy hal)
  • Ability to mute and unmute mic from script <MICON> or <MICOFF> or <MICTOGGLE> halcommands
  • HalCommand for playing MSAgent animations and moving Agent: <MSAGENT>ANIM-NAME</MSAGENT> and <AGENTXY>X,Y</AGENTXY>
  • Automatic upgrade from Hal 6.0 to 6.1. All brain and data files are kept in tact during upgrade.
  • Improved logic to Readsent function in HalBrain.DLL
  • Added a window listener to receive HalCommand from any windows app capable of sending messages
  • Compatibility with SAPI 5 with MSAgents under Vista only
  • GetHyponyms function added to HalBrain.DLL WordNet object (used by learn from text, noun & verbs only)
  • Hidden changes to Hal's graphics plug-in system that will allow for future alternative graphics engines to be used.
  • Auto-idle and appointment minute timer is temporarily disabled while Hal's options pane is open to fix focus bug
  • Fixed several logic errors and made minor improvements in script as suggested by vrossi and cagallant2
  • Fixed Hal crash if speech engine does not have pronunciation option dialog and made error message friendlier
  • Unchecking "Hal uses speech synthesis" now disables Hal's speech no matter what character engine/speech engine combination is used
  • Fixed bug in autolearning routine where sometimes blank responses were learned
  • Fixed bug in autolearning routine where both singular and plural of a word were recorded in seperate tables instead of one
  • Updated splash screens, welcome doc, and about screen to reflect version 6.1 and year 2007
  • No character option as character plug-in. Allows custom jpeg to be displayed instead and also displays sapi 5 viseme info.
  • Fixed bug where Hal would stop working correctly after loading/saving document in HalPad
  • Fixed several script errors that caused Hal to generate blank responses or pop up script error messages
  • If Ultra Hal Text-to-speech reader is installed, it communicates its settings to Hal Assistant to prevent overlap of read clipboard & read dialog features.
  • SAPI 5 voices are now labeled as "SAPI 5" instead of "NO 2D Lip Sync"
  • Shut down sequence of Ultra Hal improved to prevent occasional hanging mid-shutdown
  • If a 2nd instance of Hal is started, the new instance asks the original instance to show itself and then shuts the duplicate instance down. If unable to communicate with original instance it suggests to user to use task manager to end process.

« on: April 20, 2007, 01:16:21 pm »
I believe all the issues found in the beta of Ultra Hal Assistant 6.1 and RC1 have been addressed. Here is a release candidate 2 of Ultra Hal Assistant 6.1: www.zabaware.com/download/hal61.zip  It is version 6.1.32. Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Ogre 3D Graphics Engine
« on: April 15, 2007, 02:33:12 am »
Zabaware is looking into alternative graphics engines for character animation in addition to the currently supported MSAgent and Haptek engines. A project has been started to create a 3D character engine for Hal based on an open source graphics engine called OGRE 3D www.ogre3d.org  At least a year of work remains before the full scope of the project can be completed (full body rendering in fully immersive 3d environments) but below is a very early demo of a character running under OGRE 3D. It is a character plug-in and will only work with Ultra Hal Assistant 6.1. Lip syncronization will only work with SAPI 5 voices. Simply unzip and run the setup to install. A new character called "Ogre" will appear in Hal's options menu.
