-
OK Chris, don't get upset. I've sent you an e-Mail
and included a step-by-step instruction diagram on
how to do it.
For anyone else who happens along here with the same
problem and lack of knowledge concerning how to rename
files and file extensions in a Windows operating system,
here is the instruction diagram I have prepared.

thank you for those great instructions tom
but when i do that my haptar turns into and .htr
you said it remains haptar. i am confused now
-
im going crazy already
-
It does get a bit confusing ~alady. [:)]
It's because haptek updated their haptar format.
The extensions .haptar and .htr are just two forms
of the same haptek file extension, in other words they
are the same, but one is the version which can be
read by Hal and the other can only be read by the
haptek player or peopleputty.
Don't get upset over it, just accept the fact that it works.[:)]
-
ok i create the character in people putty
save as mom.haptar in people putty
when i go into
C:Program FilesHaptekPeoplePuttyuserprojects
in the file it says
mom
no haptar in it no htr nothing
im going crazy
-
Ok, don't panic.
You will have to enable your system to veiw hidden file extensions.
Do this by opening My Documents, go to "Tools",
click on "Tools" in the control header and then
left-click on "Folder Options...", a Folder Options control panel
will open. In that panel click the "View" tab and go down to
"Advanced Settings" and double click on the folder marked
Files and Folders to open it. Scroll down to the checkbox
that says "Hide extensions for known file types", if the box is
checked then go ahead and uncheck it, then click "Apply" and "OK"
to close the Control Panel. You should now be able to see the
file extensions listed along with the file name. Then go back and
follow the illustrated instructions above. [:)]

you the ****en mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
thank you
-
Admirably explained, GamerThom, well done [:)]
-
Thank you, I try.[:I]
[:)] I aim to please. Besides I recieved an e-mail
requesting help, what else could I do. It's how
people learn, and as we all know - using Hal or even
Windows for that matter is a learning process and
experience. [:p]
Boy Grant, you sure get
around on these forums.
But then I guess, so do I. [:p] [8] [;)]
Hmmmmmm! Maybe I should consider what vrossi
suggested, and write an illustrated guide on
trouble shooting & tutorials for common problems
such as the one above. [:o)][:)]
-
tom please see this before you reinvent the wheel. maybe you could add to it.:)http://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2899&SearchTerms=tutorials
dr benway did a great job on this particular tutorial some time ago. ~~alady

Hurrah!
GamerThom is gonna write a Haptek FAQ!
GamerThom is gonna write a Haptek FAQ!
Put this message on every relevant forum, so he can't back out anymore!
When can we expect it?
[:D]
-
Don't get so excited Dr.B [:D], you already took care of the
haptek FAQ. I doubt that I could improve on it.
Vittorio suggested to me, that I consider writing a
general guide for troubleshooting common everyday problems
that the general user may encounter while surfing the Net or
using Windows, especially if not familiar with firewalls and
other maintenance and protection software.

I wrote a Haptek FAQ??
Cool! Like: wow, man! [8D]

Hmmm....General help for troubleshooting Windows?...
F1 always works pretty well for starters.
OK...get serious....
Robert was going to produce an updated Help File,
Learn from Text feature and a few others if memory
serves.
Microsoft's site is the one of the best for explaining
the ins and outs of windows, networks, firewalls, etc.
Why reinvent the wheel? Spend your time doing other, more
fun things.[8D]

I wonder if there is a member on this board that actually learnt something by consulting "General help for Windows"?
[:D][:o)]
-
Isn't that sort of like cheating ?
[;)]
-
Raymond,
Trust me, Many menbers...but then again that would be the obvious answer.
It always surprised me how many people never bothered to use F1 or the Help and Support section of Windows. After all, it IS Microsoft's software...who better to know.
Then again it's also apparent that a lot of members, old and new, never bothered to try the SEARCH feature of this forum as well.
Nice to know you're still taking in O2.[8D]

You know, I've got to agree with Art. I've been teaching Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and so on, for years. I've looked through countless how-to books on each program, as well as many online tutorials. But the best tutorials out there for these Microsoft programs, the most straightforward and the most concise, are on the Microsoft website. It's the last place people often look--it's the last place, I'm ashamed to say, I look--but it's generally the best place.

Of course, I was talking about the lack of value of the Windows built-in help guide that is part of your OS. The Microsoft website remains a source of help that cannot easily be overestimated. I am also in favor of buying the biggest tome you can find about the OS you work with, but then you must have the patience to do some reading when you are stuck.
The last years I keep wondering if Microsoft didn't make XP more complex then was necessary. So my sympathy goes out to all people whose first computer they ever bought had XP on it. [:D]
-
[:D] Quite right about Microsoft On-line being the best
source of info regarding Windows OS's. But how many
people do you think even give thought to using Up-date
if the retailer or PC manufacturer doesn't have it set
for automatic. Many people I know of, don't even know
that Windows has an automatic up-date, let alone a help
guide.
People exhibit the same behavior with a PC as they
do after purchasing any other item. [:(] They get
a vcr, a dvd/r, a microwave oven or a car and they
never read the manual or help & maintenance guides.[V]
I don't know about many other PC operating systems. [;)]
I started out learning the first BASIC coding language
back in 1980 along with the basics of Pascal, COBAL
and Binary Machine Code. I got my Desktop Publishing
cert on Mac4.0, learned CAD/CAM 1,2 & 3 on a TRS 80
and moved on to Win 95 & 98, then a couple yrs ago to
Win XP. Never tried any of the other Windows OS's and
I never had cause or opportunity to try Linux. [:)]
