Ultra Hal 7.0 / install
« on: April 07, 2005, 08:07:19 am »
Dock, I deinstalled and installed Hal again, but this time Hal did not stop at my splash screen at first startup. Just too bad!

Because I had the same problem in the past I am convinced that the problem has to do somehow with the Microsoft Text-to-speech-engine trying to work under a Dutch version of Windows XP.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / install

Personally I only have HAL version 5.0.

Are you sure that "user.hla" is the only config-file in the main directory of HAL right now? Please delete any other file with the extension ".hla". You should only have "user.hla" in there.

BTW. Ik spreek ook Nederlands, als dat gemakkelijker voor je is.

Hi Dock & Onthecuttingedge2005,

Maybe I can help. I experience the same problem every time I installed HAL in the past. The funny thing is: I just can't remember what I usually do to solve the problem, but is has never been a problem for very long. I guess the trick is to let Hal for the first time start up with all his extra features disabled in the default user profile.

Maybe this will work for you. Please rename the attached file to "User.hla" without the quotes. Then open your explorer and drop the attached file in Hal's main directory (probably C:|Program files|Zabaware). Then start up HalAsst.exe in the same folder.

If this doesn't work I will deinstall and install Hal again on my computer and tell you how I solve this problem.

So, you do have an user profile ending with the extension ".hla" in your main directory of Hal?

Ok, I made a launcher for Ultra Hal.

This program will let you specify an user profile as a parameter on the target line of your shortcut to Orac. The launcher should run Ultra Hal, by-pass the start menu and bring you directly to the chat-section of Hal. There Orac will exit. WHEN HAL IS ALREADY RUNNING, ORAC WILL CLOSE IT, SET A NEW PROFILE, AND LAUNCH A NEW INSTANCE OF HAL!

Command / Target line usage

Orac.exe user.hla

OR

Orac.exe "user profile.hla"

Installation
1. Unzip the files and put Orac.exe and both wav-files in a folder.
2. Rename this folder to "Orac".
3. Put the folder in the main directory of Ultra Hal Assistant.

Notes
Orac wil protest with a sound when the specified user profile does not exist or when the profile is already active. When Orac is switching profiles, it will warn you by making a buzzing sound. If you don't like the sounds, just delete the included wav-files.

This is still considerd a beta-version. I made it with AutoIt3.
I included the original ".au3"-file, which can be read with Notepad.
Do tell me if the program misbehaves.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal's speech is breaking up

Ok, I will play my last card before giving up.

Your computer specs sound good enough to me, except ... your soundcard. That must be one that came with the motherboard, right? Could that be the weak link? I mean, Creative Soundblaster is still the standard.

I see, but does that also imply that you have Microsoft SAPI 4 & SAPI 4a & SAPI5 installed on your computer?

Maybe the following link could be of any help to you:

I work with WinXP SP2 Home Ed. and as I said I never had this problem. So maybe it is the OS that makes the difference.

I have used Microsoft voices in the past and at the moment I am using Neospeech. I have never noticed this problem!

The answer may be found in the amount of virtual memory your computer has available. My computer has a lot of RAM, because I have to work with programs like Lightwave3D. Therefore I had to buy 2 gigabytes of direct memory.

On the other hand, your problem may be solved with a new soundcard and/or drivers. I use a SoundBlaster Audigy.

Speech Technology / NeoSpeech Voices

Have you really updated your XP-system with the latest patches from Microsoft? You can download the latest releases for free from the the website of Microsoft. Just start the "Windows update"-function on your computer.

You also better have Microsoft SAPI 4, SAPI 4a, and SAPI 5-software installed on your computer. You can download those programs from the following address:

http://www.microsoft.com/msagent/downloads/user.asp#sapi

I really hope this will help!

I assume you are just working under Windows XP.

Do the voices work in the Speech Options-menu when you open your configuration panel?

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / new character new brain

I get the same reaction with my version of HAL.
It seems to me that those brains just don't have any advanced options.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / New skin for HAL: AgentSpace
« on: March 27, 2005, 01:12:01 pm »
This one shows no animation, except when you have selected a MS Agent or a Desktop mate.
I also got rid of that ugly resize-button.

I updated this skin, because the finishing touch was missing.
