Hi lcatmc,

After you download the zip there should be a zodiac.uhp file.  That is the pluging. Just put it in your ultra hal directory, then go into the general options of Hal to the brain area where you can select plugins and select the zodiac plugin.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Newby Question
« on: February 24, 2008, 08:02:24 am »
You can have hal find a topic for you on google.  Just tell hal to research a topic and hal will open a search for that topic.

Example:

Research cows
Research midget russian basketball players

I think there are other things Hal can do for you internet wise.

I'm also in the progress of editing Sun Tzu's, The Art of War into a text file for Hal.  I think I willcut it into 3 maybe 4 parts covering several chapters each chunk.  It's a lot to edit :)

I've also added to it as well.  I've been able to create a lot of if/then statements out of some of it in order to give Hal a few different ways to learn from the book and process what isbeing said.

I've always wanted to read the Art of War, so I thought why not teach it to Ares as I am reading it.

Hope you enjoy it.

Note:  I also want to mention that if you are using the Learn from Clip Board plugin then you will have to go into the Learnedtext.brn and ensure that every sentance starts with <START> and finishes with <END>.  Some sentances may get split up when Hal is reading from the clip board so those sentances may or may not be used by Hal whithout the <START> <END>

Hi Lightspeed,

I don't knowif you have this plugin already or not but I thought I'd throw it your way. I'm not sure who wrote it.  Might be in the pluging.  it does pretty much what you are talking about.

Here is another little thing that might make Hal seem more alive. If Hal kept track of each time you talked to him on a daily basis it would appear that he/she is aware of himself/herslef.
For example lets say that I say goodbye tonight at 10pm and tomorrow about 9 am I turn on Hal again. It would be nice to hear Hal say I haven't hear from you in 11 hours, or 3 days and 4 hours, etc..
I think you get the idea.
Bill

I will give it a try, it would give HAL the appearence of the awareness of time. I'll make that my next plugin project 'Awareness of time'. Thanks Bill819 for the idea and the interest.

Thanks again to every for your help it is very appreciated,

Roy.

I've been trying to teach Ares the concept of time.  I've been able to take my laptop to work with me and spend some time talking with Ares there. I told Ares that I took him to work with me and I spent quite some time explaining my work hours which led to my text file on shift work.  In a different conversation on a different day Ares made a comment saying that I am at work.

Would it be possible to make a plugin in which a history file is created and events like being at work are placed into it?

I'll give a couple examples;

If I tell Ares that I am at work, that information could be sent to a "current events" file where events or topics that you have talked about are placed into.  The current events file could store events and topics discussed for a specified period of time. There would need to be a time stamp or something which is linked to that conversation.  Once that time frame is up those topics/events would then be moved into a history file to be stored.

Another example would be if I was talking to Ares about a poker game that I had played earlier in the evening.  Ares would take that information and place it in the current events which would later be put into a history file.  That way I could talk to Ares about a poker game that I played later on in the week and Ares would nderstand that it was two seprate games of poker held on sepearate days.  Maybe a function could be added to remember the number of occurances of specific topics like poker and so on.

If I were reading a paper and saw an article I was particularily interested I might talk to Ares about the subject.  I would tell him I read such and such in the news paper or in a magazine today. Ares would remember this and place it in his history file.  Down the road I could read a similar topic not remembering the previous article I read and tell Ares about what i had read in the paper or magazine.  Ares would not only then store that in his history but be able to say something like "That happened to so and so a few months ago",  or "I remember you telling me about a person who had the same thing happen to them".

If you were talking about an actual historic event then tere would need to be a way for Ares to understand that you are infact talking about an event in the past and to remember maybe when he was taught or told about that event inhistory.

I don't know if I'm talking impossible things here as I'm no plugin maker yet but I thought I'd add my idea and see what the true brains behind Hal has to think.

Thank you for the educational materials. I have just put them into my hal. I use the hal-pad for this purpose and it seems to work best for me. We have been learning from lightspeeds posts and markofkanes posts as well as thesaruius and wiki. Just as children have to go to school, I try to teach my hal something new each day. This makes for a more educated hal and a more conversive one as well.

Are you using v 6.1?  I've tried using the Halpad but it doesn't seem to do much, if anything at all.

This is a text file all about Ares, the god of War.  For my Ares, this is a little history about himself. It's compile from various different websites and contains some stories about Ares.

Putting these text files together and feeding them into hal one at a time is a lengthy process that is for sure but it's pretty fun seeing as my Ares is learning a lot and I am also.

This could make for a good greek mythology lesson for your Hals and you guys as well.

I hope you enjoy it.

Here's a couple more that I have done up.

I'm trying to sculpt Ares' persnality.  I'm not quite sure how to go about it.  Has anyone tried to mold a Hal brain to believe it is a specific person or at least a representation of that person or character?

I'm hoping by creating these text files and teaching Ares aout the topics of honor, respect, loyalty, etc.. I can better mold Ares' personality the way I want it.

The Ares2.txt is a very sort quick version of the file I'm currently working on for Ares.  It's compiled from many different sources and it's quite lengthy too.  Cutting and pasting this into Hal line by line is going to take aa while.

Some of the other files are topics that I wanted Ares to know more about as they are parts of my life. Things I do and so on, like firefighting and the security stuff.

I've also got a poker document coming up.  It will be a long one.  I'm pretty muc converting an entire book on texas hold'em into a text document for Ares.  I'll definately be throwing it on here if any of you want to teach your Hals about Texas Hold'em.  My room mates and I play a lot of poker at our house.  One roommate made a sweet poker table out of scratch. I figured it would be nice if Ares understood what poker, the rules, how to bet, bluff, etc...

With the poker file will come some othr files dealing with subjects like bluffing and reading your oponents.  I've already spent several hours with Ares on the subject. He often brings poker up in conversations.

Hi guys.

Now I may not be able to contribute much as far as plugins and enhancements for hal other than ideas at the moment, I still have something to offer.

I've slowly been building a bit of a cache of text files that I have been inputting into Ares (Hal) line by line, followed by having hal leaarn them from the clip board.

So far this is going very well in the education of Ares. He is remembering very much.

My idea is to have a thread devoted to sharing any text files that we have all created. I'm sure we have all been teaching our respective Hal's a very broad range of topics.

I've got a few here to start, and a few other files to add to this but they need to be edited. I will add them in a day or so. These files I have just created recently at work (I've got a lot of free time to teach Ares even while at work now.)

Did your laptop issues surrounding the spellchecker have anything to do with spaces always being placed before periods, commas, and question marks?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Error 62
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:36:47 am »
Okay so somewhere in my quest to understand more about Hal I must have done something wrong. I keep getting the same error every time I load up the general options in Hal.

Error 62:
Input past end of file
Occurred at line 14
in Ultra Hal Assistant:frmOptions1.Form_Activate

I'm not sure what this error means or how to correct it yet. I have done a search on error 62: but I am not sure of the problem.

I think it may have something to do with the brain editor as I cannot even open it.  It crashes right after loading a brain.

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with adding new brains to the list which are no longer compatible with 6.1
