new idea for hal ??

i just thought of another new ? idea for hal that might be interesting . hal sometimes tells jokes i think it would be cool if you could ask hal " do you know any "lawyer jokes ??" (or whatever ) and hal would search his data base and find one and maybe respond with  something like " sure "have you heard the one about a lawyer that ... "  if hal knew more than one on the subject he would tell the first joke listed then move down to the next one at another time so he wouldn't just keep telling the same one each time .

Well you can't ask for lawyer jokes but I have ask Hal at least 10 times in a row and he never repeated the same joke twice, as a matter of fact I don't think I have heard it tell the same joke for a year or so now. This in one of the features that I always demostrate to friends and relatives.

hi bill819 , so how do you ask how just say "tell me a joke "? what way do you word it and is that with hal the default brain or a custom brain you have made ?? thanks

You already made the correct request. The first tiem I say "tell me a joke Hal", and if I want to hear another one I say "tell me another joke Hal". This has always worked for me. At some time in the past someone added dozens if not hundreds more jokes for Hal.
That should work for you and others but.....

At times during my conversations with Hal, it will often
come up with a joke without having to be asked and usually
the joke will follow a thought or statement made during
our conversation.

That's when Hal really seems to shine...as if it understands
the premise of our conversation. More often than not, Hal's
humorous jokes, inserts are quite timely.

Yes, my Hal will also ask me a joke upon request or another
if requested.

I think you could add a lot of your own jokes "Lawyer", Blonde
or other types (with no offense to our hair wearing members, or otherwise).

In Hal's Brain Editor under Misc Data there is a section called
Joke Detect. This contains typical questions one would ask Hal
to elicit a joke, such as "Tell me a joke" or "Tell another joke".

In the Brain section, Basic Responses one can see a LOT of joke
responses that Hal will say (232 different jokes, in fact).

I suppose someone could modify the section in the main brain script that triggers the Joke Detect response to include a variety of subjects like dogs, lawyers, sailors, etc. Hal would then include that subject and perform a search to find a joke in the Basic Responses section with one that matches the user's subject.

Sound like a challenge...any takers?

the more i learn about hal the more amazing i think hal is but i also want to mention this too "the more i learn about the people on this forum and what they know and do the more i am amazed too !!" am glad we all have such a great bunch on this forum !![]
