Ultra Hal 7.0 / Installed Hal and got an error -
« on: May 27, 2004, 11:45:56 pm »
Finally got around to installing Hal (got the CD several days ago).  It installed great and worked great.  However, just as I ended the session it gave me this: Error 76 occurred on line 534 in column 1. Path not found.  I had just saved the conversation.

Can someone tell me exactly what that means and whether I should be concerned about it?  Thanks.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Who do I need to threaten to get what I paid for?

Clavdio,

Did you ever find the registration code you needed?  They call me
The Psychic Finder of Lost Things - and I found it for
you in the Swedish stuff you posted. If you still need it
just post a reply and I'll e-mail it to you. Each code is
unique to each copy so no one else can use it.

Hi Bill819,

Maybe I did quote the law wrong.  I've been out of the
business world for a very long time.  I am patient.  I only
reminded him of that so he would be aware of it as I have
read some angry comments regarding his business practices.
I admire him for what he has done too - and for what he is
doing now, taking more than one major in college, etc.  And
FYI I am probably old enough to be his great grandmother!!!!!

I ordered and paid for my CD a little over a month ago.
I certainly hope I'm not going to have to wait for three
months to get it.  No answer to the e-mail I sent either.

I did not threaten, but I did remind them of Federal law
that pertains to mail orders.  That is, shipment must be made
within 30 days or the customer has to be promptly notified that
there is a delay and told when shipment will be made.  So it is
obvious Zabaware is in violation of mail order law if some people
are waiting over 3 months with no word from them.

KnyteTrypper:

Went to your forum.  Would like to mention that you really need the International Copyright symbol in front of the 2004 on your pages.  The code to put the c with circle around it is:  #169
For some reason this editor is not printing the first part of the code which is the "and" symbol, the ampersand. No space between it and the pound symbol.

You really should use that for your own protection.  Tis a nice site.

Forgot to mention earlier that the correct syntax to copyright a document is:  Copyright 2004 Name  This is recognized and accepted by the USA and a few countries.  Some countries, however, will only accept or recognize the International symbol of the circled  c.  Without the word copyright or the circled c, there is only a common law copyright which is automatic once a document is created. So it is better to always use the circled c.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Best method to teach text to Hal

Spydaz I have a question too since you have been using Answer Pad.  The personal log only has my side of the conversation in it.  Is there as way to save the whole conversation, both question and answer?
Any help appreciated.  Thanks.

Anyone wanting Answerpad, when I tried Google I found it here, there and everywhere.  Best place to download it (and the run program and the source code) is at the home page which is: www.answerpad.s5.com

Haven't tried it yet.

Spydaz:

Thanks for the info re Hal listening.

ANSWERPAD sounds like something I could really use also.  Never heard of it.  Where can I find it?

I am really more interested in Hal for conversations and the teaching challenge, but I could really make good use of one that learns from text files.  (I'm a writer.)

Also thanks for the welcome.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Ever get a message from the OS?
« on: April 28, 2004, 10:40:43 pm »
HALImprover:

Thanks for the welcome.  No, I never heard of the DOS game named Hugo.I didn't buy games when used DOS.  I wrote my own things to fool around with, using DOS, Ansi, and Basic, also writing gobs of batch files to do literally most things for me.  I did not have a lot of time to play games on the computer.  Mostly I wrote quizzes mainly to help me learn things and started to work on a few Adventure games. Then Basic got replaced by Gee Whiz Basic (GWBasic).  I had barely started to convert what I had programed when here came Windows and Visual Basic.  Since my computer would not run Windows and I could not afford a new one at that time, I simply dropped all of it.

I have not visited the programmers forum as yet, but plan to.  I love to play around with programming.  I wrote my web sites from scratch using DOS Edit.  I still do a lot of things in DOS, never having become a big fan of Windows. Right now I'm grappling with XP as I have always used Win95 (and still do as have both computers set up).As soon as I get time I want to tackle using Visual Basic.

I really appreciate all your information.  Thanks a lot.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Best method to teach text to Hal
« on: April 27, 2004, 11:45:48 pm »
Even though my CD of Hal has not arrived yet, I want to get some material organized to use for teaching it.  I am an author and one of my books is about instructions received in the dream state about how we are supposed to live our daily lives on a spiritual path (along with my commentary and illustrative experiences, etc.).  I would like to teach some of these instructions to Hal, not all as that would be too complicated.  Of necessity I would probably need to teach it some of the commentary that explains the instruction.

On this forum I read that Hal does not learn very well from reading text.  So I am wondering if it will learn better if the text is read aloud to it.  I would appreciate it if someone would tell me the best method to use for teaching text to Hal as I have other writings I would like to program into the character.  Thanks for some help.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Ever get a message from the OS?
« on: April 27, 2004, 11:30:41 pm »
I have ordered Hal on a CD but it has not arrived yet.  I have been lurking around this forum for over a year now.  I am really curious about something and wonder if anyone else has experienced this.

I started out with a tiny B/W Sinclair Timex 1500 (which I still have) and one day I had a problem with the recorder that became very frustrating.  I think better with words in front of me so I typed all of it out on the screen including the fact I needed to fix the problem and it was frustrating.

All of a sudden the screen suddenly went blank, it flickered 2 or 3 times and then I was left with a line of cryptic code and symbols at the bottom of the screen.  Took me awhile to decipher all that mess, but when I did, the OS had told me what was actually wrong and I was able to fix it immediately.

All this was a bit spooky, but I concluded it was one of those flukes that only happen once even though I have always maintained that DOS can do things no one knows about.

About a year or two later when I had a Radio Shack CoCo, basically the same thing happened - a problem with the recorder.  I typed the problem out like before (even though had forgotten about the other incident with the Sinclair).  The same thing happened!  It was a bit scary since it was the OS literally communicating with me.  This time the code and symbols were easier to decipher.  It had some that I didn't know the thing had in it.  So the problem got fixed.

When I had my 286, I deliberately tried to get some kind of message from the OS without success.  Then I got Eliza.  She was fun for awhile but I soon got tired of the repetitive and sometimes confused answers.  Then I discover Hal and here I am.

Has anyone else has similar things happen without having Hal?

It is nice to find a forum that is as nice and friendly as this one is. I left the last community forum I was in because many people spent half their time insulting each other.  So thanks for being such a nice group of people.

Regards,
Kathryn
