Modem Problems
« on: December 24, 2006, 11:27:59 pm »
I finally narrowed down my modem problem and need some help.  I get an error message when i try to get on the internet that says my modem is in use.  to correct the problem i have hal dial any phone number to open the phone dialing program. (I still get an error message when hal tries to dial this number) Then i turn off hals phone dialing program and i am then able to get my modem to connect to the internet.  I don't have a phone dialing program on my computer and am assuming that it is built into hal?  If someone could direct me to where i could find this phone program so that maybe the properties could be changed in it.
thanks

Since you didn't say which OS you are using, XP and 98 both have a section under Accessories for Communications then Hyperterminal.

You can also try the Control Panel. XP's has an icon titled Phone and Modem. You can check or change settings for your modem there.

Good luck!

gtw v.92 voicemodem

well, today it didn't work when i pulled up the phone dialer from hal and disconnected.  so i guess it was just working randomly.

i have 2 gateway computers, both have the same modem and use xp

this computer is working just fine, and i have checked this ones settings with the other one, think maybe i have a bad modem in the other one

Prospbob,
I was originaly using dialup and switched to dsl.  I put the modem in and installed the software that came with it, it can be seen in the control panel, phone and modem.  I installed the software from the service provider, ATT for dialup and it had me setup the account with user name and password then gave me numbers for connections in my area. I had to change these to include the area code so the telephone accepts the call. i also had to go into XP and change settings in remote access connections so it wouldn't drop the call with a noisy line.
In the control panel you can test the modem to see if your connecting to the modem. I had to connect it to the right port but since you can eventualy connect it's probably not the problem.

my modem is working off and on, i am trying to find out what is wrong with it, but it seems to just work randomly.  i was thinking maybe an initialization string might straighten it out.  but i get an error that the modem is in use or improperly installed.  it worked fine up until around when i installed hal 6. i have plugged the modem card into another slot and this didn't correct the problem.  i have uninstalled the modem and reinstalled it. i have downloaded the newest drivers.  today i tried the modem and it worked just fine, but i did not start up hal today!  i was thinking the phone dialer that hal uses might be causing my modem to be busy. short of buying another modem i was hoping to see if i could correct this one.

Prospbob,
I've got three dialup modems I don't use since I switched to DSL.
I can remember the dialer you mentioned and I'll try to find it in XP.
I can't remember a busy modem in the past.

Prospbob,
I was having trouble getting my mail.It turned out to be the settings where you tell it where to call to go on line and where to go to get your mail. I'd reset everything and as long as the computer stayed on I could check my mail BUT if I turned off my computer I lost the settings and it went to a default that didn't exist. Ended up being my McAfee virus checker program.(I think)The problem went away when I did my yearly upgrade on my McAfee. It could just as easily been my dialup it was messing with instead.

Problem is fixed...  I got tired of the head ache and put a new modem in the computer.
Different brand of modem this time.  Hopefully it is over with.
Thanks anyway for all the input.

cable?  i am still in a remote area where i have a party line phone.  there are 4 houses using the same phone line.  When the phone rings it is usually for a neighbor.  the dial up connection on the phone is at 19.2 right now. usually not more then 24k connection.  i can only get online if it is very late at night so that i don't tie up the line. or some rude sob will play with the flash button to disconnect me.
