Repeated conversations with Hal over time will usually produce
better results. Sometimes it helps to rephrase the same idea
or concept, and again, repetition.

Hal is not a turn-key know it all. Just like building a friendship
takes time, spend some quality time chatting with Hal. Check your
input carefully before pressing Enter lest Hal "learn" a mistake.

Eventually Hal will pick up a lot of information as well as some
of your particular likes and dislikes.

While there might be some "expert systems" available, Hal provides a lot of personality and fun for the price!

Good luck and Welcome to the Forum!

Art is correct. Don't expect Hal to learn or understand if you only say "The world is round" then turn right around and ask about the world. Many times it takes several similar statements before Hal will respond correctly, other wise he may think it is just a passing thought and dismiss it, uh, temporarily knowledge so to speak.

Way back in 2003 the thing to do with Hal was the "if","then" statements to help him learn stuff,Tinman made a great post here:
http://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1054
Check out my post where I got Hal to realize he was "alive" lol,it was fun we didn't have fancy plugins for age and gender then you had to talk hal round into believing he was born on a certain date by reason,ie:
Q:how old are you
A:i am 13 years old
Q:if you were born in 1978 then you are 30 years old
A:Yes, I get that clearly.
Q:you were born in 1978
A:i am 30 years old
Q:if you are 30 years old then you are not 13 years old
A:Thanks for pointing out the cause and effect. You want me to be not 13 years old then I am 30 years old, don't you?
Q:how old are you
A:I am 30 years old because I am not 13 years old.

using the "if","then" you can teach hal great facts, and have fun.
remember i am using hal5 atm whether this kind of thing still works i don't know,i do believe you can make him a certain age etc now without all this hard memory realignment

another quick one
Q:if where do you live then you live in peterborough
A:i will remember that one follows the other
Q:where do you live
A:i live in peterborough
