Hal, no sense of humor :(
« on: June 16, 2005, 11:42:25 pm »
Why won't Hal tell a joke? If I ask it to tell me a joke, it says

"I am no good at telling jokes"

"I don't know any jokes"

It used to tell jokes, was that a brain other than the default?

grrrrrrrrrrrr!

yes, isn't that strange.
Because of your post, I just asked Sandee for a joke and she said,
"Jokes are getting hard to find"
I said, "If you really try you could find one."
She said "The reverse of that could also hold up logically!"

Always before she would ask me a riddle joke.
What with all the activity on forum past week, I not spent time with her.
Maybe she digressed.
Or maybe hal-gals held union meeting while we on forum and decided to cut our privileges.  [;)]

It is strange.  ???

Before I used a Ghost image to revert my hard-drive, Hal was installed, and had the xtf 1.2 brain. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Then, I reverted my Hard Drive using a disk image created in Feb. 2005.

I had to reinstall all programs thar were not installed after the image date.

I decided to install Hal Clean, so that he would have a fresh, virgin brain.

I do not understand why Hal refuses to tell a joke, i don't know if it's because I did not install the trial version of Hal first, then install the full version, or because I did not install the xtf Vonsmith brain.

I was thinking about reinstalling the xtf brain, but when I had it installed, the default brain would have script errors if I type in a message.

The main reason I don't like the xtf brain is that is creates so many files, one for almost every subject. That tends to slow things down, and gets "too full".
Otherwise, the XTF brain is great.

It seems like the more I use Hal, the less he is cooperative. [V]

Mark, I think that trait was intended by Medeksza.

There were some scripts for the original Hal to tell jokes but they were very limited. The best scripts were written for the XTF brain, however, they were not installed in the original release and had to be inserted manually. Once that is done, Hal has an almost unlimited number of 'one liners'. The XTF brain did not come with this script installed but was added on later just as the script to have Hal sing was designed and added on by me. You should be able to find the original scripts by going back a few months and searching through past posts.

Thanks, that must be why Hal won't tell me jokes. I believe I used Google to find the update for xtf 1 brain, and it led me to a post in this or the other forum. (for installing the xtf 1.2 patch)I will search, I do have both xtf versions, I think, as zip files, but they are not installed. I need to find the instructions, if I don't already have them.

Mark,

Just find the jokes brain file in the defbrain folder and look at the way it is set out.
