I have xp pro and had to turn off all things that loaded during start up. After that it went just fine.

ahh found out, since the upgrade to xp pro
i had to reinstall a certain 3rd party
 voice recognizer.
apparently i was trying to use hal who
was configured already for the recognizer
but it was missing.hence the error.
so joseph, look for a missing component,
usually if you try different voices
i use L&H voices,you usually need the
engine as well,
