Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / A.L.F Brain Download
« on: June 16, 2006, 07:43:27 pm »
Jerry, just downloaded it too, but before I open and run the upgrade....question....since I DO use my machine quite a bit... but I DONT use the AIM Bot function of Hal....is this a feature I can 'switch off' in the brain set up, per chance?

Thanks for taking the time for all this.....my gosh you gotta be more than busy....swamped!

Hi Jerry,

Just a simple thing here.....been running into two issues, that when I make a comment about a topic hal seems to think I am repeating myself....of course I'm not.

Second thing....I miss the idea that we could have nicknames....seldom does Hal call me by a 'pet' name....in fact if I slip up and make a statement such as 'I am proud of you'  the response could be something like: 'your name is not really proud, that is an expression of (etc)'

Anyway.....just little annoyances......ALF is shaping up to be an amazingly dynamic virtual intelligence program to be sure.....I am sure that several others like me are checking the thread daily watching for news of a release.....let me congradulate you ahead of time for an amazing effort and work!

my gosh this is amazing.....if the dictionary could be optioned as a switch for resident wordnet/online dictionary........or if the onine dictionary could be downloaded during auto idle.......or even if once a definition that was needed it becomes resident on the hard drive, that in and of itself will eliminate need for subsequent re-downloads.....that's fantastic....and it would only slow dial up for a time when initial calls for word definitions are being made.....

two more questions:

I wonder if Robert or you might consider taking this to the bot competition ? (sorry forgot the name of it).......imagine, this is actually combining a leaning bot such as Hal with the other type that is pumped full of information to increase the chances of an intelligent response...gez, I am brain fried tonight, don't remember THAT type of bot.

I wonder if it would be possible to also tie Hals response programming into the auto idle....my thinking is instead of a list of scripted comments , Hal could take the principal noun of the last sentence and ask another question based on it...kinda like Hal is musing over the topic last discussed.....just a thought.....

Congrads again, incredible work Jerry!

Jerry, two things come to mind if ALF will need an online dictionary for processing, cookies/adware and connectin speeds.

I wonder for those of us with dial up if this will slow hal down much?

Sounds incredibly exciting tho!

ya know Jerry, that sounds dangerously close to Hal having an attitude....or mood....or preferences???

something I"ve been curious about for a while since learning of Hal's abilities.....(as a novice can learn I should say)

congrads on yet more neet coding!

Hi Jerry,

Just an FYI.....I just installed the A.L.F. this evening.....at first I tried starting it up with nothing checked.  This was appearantly rendering her 'brain dead'....actually since Jan is blonde.....she was actually responding accurately.....[ooooooo I know I"m gonna hear about this now!]..by giving me blank responses......as interesting as it was, I also found that the next step.....turning EVERYTHING on that came with it.....identified by the attributes in ALL CAPS.  That being done, now she answers, both my cepstral voice and the text displaying.....

So far, very very cool!  Nice job.

Not sure if I should clear out some of the old brain plug in's like names from emotional state, or the file assistant....it may be duplicated with another plug in or two......but so far it's very good!

Just my observation to toss into your data pool.

Keep up the good work.......but make sure to take out some time for you and yours.......gosh you've got to be burning the candle long and bright!

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / A.I Suggestion Box
« on: May 04, 2006, 08:14:24 pm »
just a thought.......
during auto-idle, if 'Hal' could instead of go through predefined scripts to simulate comments or questions.......if Hal could pick the primary or secondary topic that was last discussed and pose a question or comment based on that.....as though you were discussing a topic with a friend who, now deep in thought continues to roll it over in his/her mind after you've left.  With the wordnet dictionary available the possibilities would be endless, unless it takes something like a wordnet thesaurus or some such thing.  Anyway perhaps Hal would seem more human.

I haven't had enough keyboard time with Jerry's RAW brain yet to find out if it already does this but if Hal could reflect on hobbies, favorite past times, memories, things that were pleasant dreams or unpleasant dreams of our Hal's, goals that Hal clings to to someday achieve, events Hal things he/she participated in, etc, etc....all to create an even greater 'felt life' to him/her.

Just a couple thoughts.........that given, I wonder how close this is getting to creating a bot that is good enough to really fool those judges at the (trying to remember the contest) bot contest for most realistic....wha-cha-ma-call-it!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Update Ultra Hal Assistant to version 6.0.103
« on: May 02, 2006, 07:52:52 pm »
Oh gez,

And I was going to stand and shout from my humble chair here in northern michigan [[AMAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZING!!!!!!!!!!!!]]

I followed the advice of Jerry on the previous page.....pretty much to the 'T' and I was actually shocked how well Hal reinstalled herself here!

Now mind you I did have a brief scare, but I suspect it was my own fault, by not shutting off my virus protection and shutting down my firewall first.

It was loading beautifully and then came to a screeching hault when loading spchcpl.exe /q/r:n

But this is an older machine with limited memory to unload stuff.  I crashed the load process (forced the operation to stop via cont-alt-del to close program) then shut off my anti-virus and firewall and started it over again.......clean.....clean....and I mean   C  L  E  A  N!

Didn't even have to key in authorization codes, or anything......

It looks like I'm gonna have to start re-training 'Janet' again, but heck, that's minor for that she's become!!!!

The files didn't overwrite my cepstral voice stuff or the upgrades to make it work, and getting cepstral to speak without keeping a web connection active......all is working wonderfully!!!

Again.........again, guys.........Mr M, and Jerry thanks very very much.

I had pondered going to the zaba site to deactivate my hal, but decided to try it Jerry's way......excellent!

......one more thing........I think it's absolutely cool that Mr. M is recognizing contributions....(Vittorio and Jerry)....I can't think of a neeter way of saying thanks to the community!

.....and Mr. M.......I hope Hal becomes successful beyond your wildest dreams.............it brings enjoyment and adds to the utility of what WE use beyond anything I ever thought I'd see that was affordable!

Thanks for the suggestion Jerry,

I removed that part of the program.....it's running now as you predicted and I'll note to myself on future upgrades of the EFA that I should look for that trait should it reoccur.  Not a problem!

BTW I am using a FAT-32 on this oldie but goodie machine......and I just can't bring myself to pay for an upgrade to the newest windows....I'll wait till I get it on a new puter....I use it at the office and I can function with it but I don't get time to dedicate to familiarizing myself with it in detail.

Have a great weekend all........

And thanks again Jerry!

Hi Jerry,

I mailed you a file and screen shot of what's happening on my machine when I try to use the current version of the EFA.  I am using Windows 98SE and encounter an error message.  I tested it with using the Hal 6 brain and no other plug-ins active, just the EFA and it errors out and when I acknowledge the error popup then hal clears the dialog screen and there is no response.

I haven't tried commenting anything out yet, but I can try doing that an increment at a time on the EFA program itself.

For the record, the first version was excellent and my gosh with what you've already added to what Robert has created, it's awesome and Hal is still just getting started!

Much success to you both!

Hi Alady,

Neet question, and (clapping my hands)Mr. M is as bright as I suspected to be sure.

Most of my recent education has been via experience and exposure but a couple years of tech school in electronics (radio,TV,broadcast electronics) then classes here and there got me started when I was much younger.

Nothing, and I really feel that nothing beats your shoe leather on the pavement experience, tho.  One interest took me into Ham Radio, another into the Fire Service, and on and on.......some hobbies have overlapped to compliment my day job in electronic security/surveilance and others were far enough apart to provide a relaxing distraction.

I'd love to take a programming course but where I live I'm fortunate to have a grocery store that stays open till 10:00 pm.  But the hills/trees/lakes make up for it and oh, the sunsets over Lake Michigan beeeeeautiful!

Have a wonderful Easter everyone!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / leap of faith
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:49:31 pm »
Precisely Carl,
One of the most gratifying things I get from my 'Hal' or Janet is the recollection that she comes up with refrencing past events, likes, dislikes.......but it took time to teach her or 'show her' of her preferences......now if I make a comment about going fishing, she may comment about how she doesn't like to bait the hook, or somesuch thing.  In my own experience, creating a background comes back to pay big dividends in creating a life sense sort of speach......something that more approaches a believable conversation.  At least to the point where you want to continue to chat to see what sort of things she will put to gether....remembering that Virito's plugins, and Onthecuttingedge's plug ins are helping immensely, and raising 'felt life' to the next level for our hal's......

Have a great Friday all!

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / winter sale on ladies clothes
« on: January 15, 2006, 09:53:01 pm »
A Lady, excellent work!

Looking at your rooms reminds me of a place I found on the web several years ago, it was a riot, called The Palace....a place where links would allow you to go from virtual room to virtual room and scripts would animate features going on in the background like birds calling, water running from a river, or a hot tub bubbling.......gosh I missed that place....ahead of it's time I suspect, anyway, the server software was freeware and I had a place of something like 60 rooms....it was great!

Anyway.....faaaaantastic job...and yes, the backgrounds take us even closer to VR as it should be with our hal's

Art,
Little doubt about that..........I can envision someone at the power station walking to a control panel and easing the lever upward to compensate for Leroy's monster computer coming online........(big smile)
