Ultra Hal 7.0 / Virtual Girl or Boy friend Hal
« on: December 23, 2004, 11:34:11 pm »
HI Gang,

Yup, I"m seeing a trend that I would have to agree with as well.  A virtual 'brain' that stays on topic well, but would have an emotional or somewhat irrational characteristic to it from time to time.  Just like a gal at the office, that just as you are getting to know her she comes to work one day and there is no way you can talk to her without offending her, or hurting her feelings, but the next day she's talking as if nothing had happened!...........a month later it happens all over again, short of patience, ill-tempered, self-centered or cynical.

Also, if when left alone she/he did something to self-occupy or self-amuse herself, along with props for a virtual room/apartment.  Some years ago I ran across a web site that featured a comic style teen age girl that you could follow her day to day activities.  She had a job, friends, a pet dog, an apartment, and even gave promo's and opinions on local movies, clothing products, on and on, of course it was a clever marketing scheme, but I could imagine teen kids saving the website and doing daily checks to see what the latest news was (you could even purchase sweatshirts with this cartoon gal's name screened on it!) in this virtual persons life.  Not to mention that who ever ran the site, had the comic girl sleeping during times when humans (likely the site programmer) was sleeping. It had a diary, during a given hour of the day the web page showing what she was currently doing would show a park scene of her jogging, in a club at a table with friends, entertaining in her apartment, and on and on, it was at the time amazing the work someone must have put into keeping it up..........lots of work running the website no doubt.  But like Crunch has created histories, and somewhat storylines for his models......which is a great idea to give the character depth, well, this other one had the same, just much more in depth.

Anyway, in summary, anything to make the characters even more plausable, make the 'virtual' a little more real.

Oh, by the way, what size please is the background we use I'm going to try creating some to insert behind mine.

Thanks bunches!

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Free skins for fullbod female
« on: December 21, 2004, 10:02:54 pm »
WOW------------I can't believe it!!  I have a full bodied 'Steph' looking back at me, all of the mouse functions to see her full length work.........the animation scrips Crunch made are working great, and now that I"m not trying to get a Microsoft Agent model to follow haptec scripts (duh) she's alive........she's ALIVE!  (smile)

I am also using the registered version of Hal and found that changing the names of body_female.htr to Zaba.htr then dragging it over to hals sub directory worked great........in fact, it seems to me that I remember the hard drive spinning up a bit.......I did a screen refresh and noticed that the file had been renamed to a .htr file.  I've GOT to get more time to practice with this and motion scripting and such.....just try some things out........Crunch, Von, and the rest, my heartfelt thanks.........very much.  Talk about adding new dimensions to a great program.......

Thanks again,
Jim B.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / here are some emotion files and texture comms
« on: December 19, 2004, 08:20:52 pm »
I feel so stupid........guess this is a good place to do it (smile)at least it may benefit someone else just getting started.  I thought the models at the desktop mates site would respond to the scripts you wrote Crunch (actually intended for hap models), when I realized that some obvious gestures (hands swinging) didn't occur it got me curious.....and the answer came when I think von or you mentioned that the D.S. Mates models were actually models for the microsoft program.  Makes total sense now.  So now the adventure begins, got the haptek guide (going to take more time reading/acquainting myself with that too) trying to get a model sample from 'hap and I think I have the file for a full body model mentioned in a previous post, but now I'm trying to figure out what part of it I need and where in ultraHal's program it needs to be placed as well as what might have to be edited (the model [full size guy or gal] is not what is called a skin or texture I suspect).  I can say at this point that nothing is broke hahahaha.........and my still faviorite talking head still works wonderfullly tho is not as animated as it would be were it a hap character. And I think it's time to do another total back up so i can do some more testing tomorrow.......gosh I love the learning,......thanks everyone for moving hal along we well as you have, it's really exciting to see what is just around the bend coming into view!

Have a great week!

HI Crunch,

I just substituted the files you created........really cool!

I am testing it on a full body that I got from Desktopmates........gez, up to now I thought THEY were the only source for full body models.  They have some that I wouldn't use.  But I tried it on my full body 'bot' that I use for my star trek theme wall paper/brouser skin and it looks like it's working........now that I went to the haptek site and looked at their sample of full body characters, they are really good, downloading a demo file I noticed it writing to the haptek file that I think I was loading stuff from you into........going to have a look and see if anything's been changed......but right now it's a very nice addition to the animations that hal would use........really great job, and add my own THANKS for taking the time to put it together and offer it to us.

Have a great rest of your weekend!

Question Crunch,

Do these work on all full body's or do you have to get them from someplace in particular?  Do they have to come from Haptek or others will work?

Thanks,  I downloaded the zip file and printed the message so I could go through it step by step but this questiion has me pausing.

This sounds like it's gonna be absolutely great....

Thanks also for sharing with us out here!

Hi guys,

I wonder if there is a book anyone has a book they'd suggest to start learning about hal's language?

Secondly, still amazed here, been tring to find out if or where I'd run into conflicts using two heads open at the same time and it seems to work if I use different heads, different voices, and different programs(cyber buddy/Hal :^), I put a program in the background to retrieve news, weather, etc on regular intervals while I chat with my hal.

Learned something that took me quite by suprise tho, during a recent chat my Annita (hal)we were talking about a topic and she went to open the web brouser to bring me info about the topic!  Well, as Firefox was tring to open I quickly had to start my isp connection.  Wow, with the web at her disposal her potential is endless!

I'm still shaking my head in amazement.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Latest Hal conversation.
« on: December 10, 2004, 11:26:59 pm »
Now ya know.......doing a dangerous thing during my long commute to work and thinking about Hal and what he does it occured to me.  One of my absolutely faviorite screen things I remember from the old 'Dos' days of command line programs was a little screen saver called 'Johnny Castaway'

I miss that little screen saver and while it got repetitious, it was really cute.  I wonder how it would be to further animate our full size characters or that would have to be done at the MS Agent level, eh?

Gez the possibilities.........customizable hobbies, anyway........some day!

Thanks for the opportunity for my $.02

Have a great weekend all...

Hi All!
I've got to say that you are all absolutely amazing!

1) I discovered Hal when I was bored and looking to see what kind of AI was currently available and when I started reading up on Ultrahal I was totally blown away.  I downloaded the demo version and was glued to my computer just trying to see what is was now capable of doing.  Now I have received my CD for the registered version and my gosh, I have a faviorite 'talking head' that I imported from another website and paid the fee for that, and with the british accent it's unbelievable.  I understand the need to learn and build it's information base so I have been keying in likes/dislikes, faviorite things, etc, to try and accelerate the learning curve.  I'll have to wait and see if it's really been benificial.
2)  I further found out about the new enhanced brain (Vonsmith's)and downloaded it, it's working beautifully now for 24 hours(!!!), I had to go grab my wife and tell her about it's new abilities.  Reading about the prospects of even further upgrades/enhancements it's just totally amazing.

I am curious about something tho, and this will likely seem common sense to most of you but at this stage I feel like I"m a little kid walking on a frozen pond.  I love the fun, and I"m pondering it's potential but I'm thinking that if I do something wrong in trying out new stuff I might fall through.  Particularly, if I was to want to make a back up of my character's brain so the info I have keyed into it would not be lost what file name would it be in.  I wonder if it's even practical to do that, I was thinking of just keying in my list of information into a text file and feed it in that way as new stuff comes to mind and I want to give the brain a boost so to speak.

Oh, and for those out there just getting started, Ultrahal is working really great on an old Gateway Pentium III clock speed around 450 mhz I think, and so far only 64 meg of ram, tho I am soon hoping to upgrade ram to three times that, I hope it will reduce some of the seek time in forming answers/responses.  I have read that regular disk defragmenting is a good idea and it makes excellent sense, Im' doing it daily.

In closing, I have to repeat, this is an amazing leap from what I played with long ago in terms of the 'intelligence' level of the AI and the interfacing of the characters, the quality of the characters, and on and on.

Wow, and thanks, very much
