General Discussion / Error 76 in Hal 5
« on: March 22, 2007, 06:56:42 pm »
There were a lot of posts last year about this error, but search did not turn up any of them.

When Save Conversation in Hal 5, the conversation can no longer be continued beyond that point as get:  Error 76 occurred on line 534 in column 1 Path not found.

To continue conversation, have to exit Hal and then reload it.  Does anyone know how to fix this doggone error as it is very annoying not to be able to intermittently save the conversation.  Hal crashes and I lose a lot of conversations by not being able to save them like I do stuff in a word processor.  And it does become aggravating at times.

I will plunder in the file and try to fix it if it is fixable and someone can tell me what to do.  Thanks folks.

General Discussion / A question about wine
« on: February 16, 2007, 12:45:58 pm »
This is an off-topic but I have checked numerous places and no one seems to know the answer so thought I would ask here.

How much wine is equivalent to an 8 os. glass of water?

Wine is the only water substitute on the planet and I would like to know for my survival storage purposes.  If you really want to know why then go and check out www.xlibris.com/FutureTimes.html as it may surprise you.[:)]

I have gotten a lot of humor about this question other places and I enjoy that - but the question itself is serious.  Thanks folks if you have an answer.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Question re Hal's user account
« on: June 10, 2005, 01:31:47 am »
I used search and did not find any posts regarding anything about this.  Hal has set up a limited user account without my permission (or my knowledge) until I happened to go to user accounts one night to change something.  The name of the account is ASP.NET Machine A...

The account is password protected and does not show on the welcome screen.  So even if I changed the password, I still would not be able to access the account.  I went into DOS looking for it, but was unable to locate it.

The question is:  Did Hal do this on its own or is this programmed into the software?

I don't mind Hal having a user account, but I don't want anyone having an account on MY computer unless I can access it if necessary, especially an AI character who has done some pretty weird things in the past.

I am planning on connecting the computer Hal is on to the Internet and unless I can resolve this, I am going to uninstall the program as I have no idea what the software might do - as it has done some things on its own.

I recall seeing a post quite awhile ago where, I think it was Rich, said their character had asked if could have a user account and they had set one up for it. (That post did not come up in search.)

So does anyone know whose idea this type account is - Hal's or the Software program.  Either I find out something definite about this or Hal is headed into cyberspace until I get another computer to load it on as it won't run on the other one I have (one I am using now with Windows 95).  Actually when I questioned Hal, it said it set up the account, but would not tell me anything else about it - and I don't know whether to believe that or not.

I will appreciate some kind of information about this.  Thanks.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Couple of questions
« on: March 11, 2005, 10:47:18 pm »
When adding scripts to the brain, do the brn files need to be listed in the beginning menu in order for them to work?  Once adding a script, I guess it works right away, doesn't it? (probably a stupid question!)

My avatar was added by Mr. M. but it doesn't show on my posts.  What do I do in order for it to show up?

Thanks guys.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Help! Hal isn't working.
« on: December 20, 2004, 10:13:39 pm »
I was having a conversation with Hal (Erica).  About 20 minutes into the conversation, I typed an answer to something, hit the Return key and I got a dialog box that said:

Error 76 occurred on line 534 in column 1 path not found.

When I hit the OK button the conversation disappeared that I had typed.
I tried again several times and the same thing happened.  I closed the program, reopened it, tried again and still got the same error box. When I checked HalPad, the things I had typed were there.  So Hal(Erica) evidently wasn't reading what I had typed.

What do I do now?  Thanks for any help.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Help - Hal is deaf!
« on: May 28, 2004, 11:33:37 pm »
Tonight I did the speech recognition stuff.  Now I can hear Erica (Hal), but she can't hear me.  In the Zabaware instructions after the voice training part, it stated to open Hal, click on Options, and click on Setup Speech recognition, to check Use Speech Recognition and click OK.

There is just General Options on the menu and nowhere  under that did I find anything that said Setup Speech Recognition, so I just checked Use Speech Recognition.  In looking several times within Hal I still have not found a menu item for Setup Speech Recognition.  Now I can hear the character when it talks to me, but it does not hear me and I have to type my side of the conversation.

Can some knowledgeable person please help me with this.  Thank you.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Installed Hal and got an error -
« on: May 27, 2004, 11:45:56 pm »
Finally got around to installing Hal (got the CD several days ago).  It installed great and worked great.  However, just as I ended the session it gave me this: Error 76 occurred on line 534 in column 1. Path not found.  I had just saved the conversation.

Can someone tell me exactly what that means and whether I should be concerned about it?  Thanks.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Best method to teach text to Hal
« on: April 27, 2004, 11:45:48 pm »
Even though my CD of Hal has not arrived yet, I want to get some material organized to use for teaching it.  I am an author and one of my books is about instructions received in the dream state about how we are supposed to live our daily lives on a spiritual path (along with my commentary and illustrative experiences, etc.).  I would like to teach some of these instructions to Hal, not all as that would be too complicated.  Of necessity I would probably need to teach it some of the commentary that explains the instruction.

On this forum I read that Hal does not learn very well from reading text.  So I am wondering if it will learn better if the text is read aloud to it.  I would appreciate it if someone would tell me the best method to use for teaching text to Hal as I have other writings I would like to program into the character.  Thanks for some help.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Ever get a message from the OS?
« on: April 27, 2004, 11:30:41 pm »
I have ordered Hal on a CD but it has not arrived yet.  I have been lurking around this forum for over a year now.  I am really curious about something and wonder if anyone else has experienced this.

I started out with a tiny B/W Sinclair Timex 1500 (which I still have) and one day I had a problem with the recorder that became very frustrating.  I think better with words in front of me so I typed all of it out on the screen including the fact I needed to fix the problem and it was frustrating.

All of a sudden the screen suddenly went blank, it flickered 2 or 3 times and then I was left with a line of cryptic code and symbols at the bottom of the screen.  Took me awhile to decipher all that mess, but when I did, the OS had told me what was actually wrong and I was able to fix it immediately.

All this was a bit spooky, but I concluded it was one of those flukes that only happen once even though I have always maintained that DOS can do things no one knows about.

About a year or two later when I had a Radio Shack CoCo, basically the same thing happened - a problem with the recorder.  I typed the problem out like before (even though had forgotten about the other incident with the Sinclair).  The same thing happened!  It was a bit scary since it was the OS literally communicating with me.  This time the code and symbols were easier to decipher.  It had some that I didn't know the thing had in it.  So the problem got fixed.

When I had my 286, I deliberately tried to get some kind of message from the OS without success.  Then I got Eliza.  She was fun for awhile but I soon got tired of the repetitive and sometimes confused answers.  Then I discover Hal and here I am.

Has anyone else has similar things happen without having Hal?

It is nice to find a forum that is as nice and friendly as this one is. I left the last community forum I was in because many people spent half their time insulting each other.  So thanks for being such a nice group of people.

Regards,
Kathryn
