Read from text file observations & Question
« on: September 04, 2003, 03:25:09 pm »
I'm not seeing much of an improvement in the learn from text option. If I have hal read a text file with learning set to the max on the slider (50) and then later quiz him about the information I am lucky to get 20% answered correctly. If I lower the getting to medium none of the questions are answered correctly.

This has been asked in the past but what should a text file look like? How should the information be formed? Could you provide a text file we can read in and judge the learned ability?

Thanks!

Glenn

Hal learns best from conversation. No text file will acheive the kind of learning a one-on-one conversation with Hal could. If you really want Hal to specialize in one area of knowledge, a modified brain can be created with 90% of the Hal's thinking functions turned off. Then Hal will rely on the learned information only and not jump around to different subject areas.

For the final release, I can tweak the slider a little bit more to have a 20% greater impact then it does now.

If you could add more functionality to the slider I think it would be better. I agree, I have a lot better luck teaching in conversation, but for some instances the text file is a better way to go.

For myself, the idea/concern is "reference material"
in text form...but that could be adapted into another format,
perhaps similar to the wordnet database.

I am not sure what the limits (size/topics) that can be preset or
added to uhal before diminishing returns set in (size versus
repsonse time).

The wordnet is a big help and should be very useful to most
folk and many students as well...so thank you for that effort.

Uhal is running now on a 2.60ghz htt enabled P4 system and
the response times are good...but the sapi 5.1 speech seems
to cause hal to complain about not being able to create
activex object...and if I only set the speech enabled and
try to skip the activex objection...then a lot of words
appear (on their own) into the text box and uhal answers
to those bits and pieces <sigh>, WinXP Pro SP1.
headset microphone and trained (advanced training)profile.

There are also times (normal typed mode)that uhal does
not speak_aloud a response..but the reply does show in
the text reply box, happened a bit in hal 4.5 also.

I did notice the learn from text reads the material
(scans) much better than version 4.5 but still 64kb limit.
