If only my computer were fast enough to run them. I'm 50 Mhz short! [:(]

The AT&T voices do sound pretty good. They are a bit expensive for a hobbyist. The basic engine is about $35 with a couple of voices. Additional voices are about $35 each. That means $70 for me to get the engine + the voice I want. I've been holding off my purchase because of the price. If anyone knows a cheaper way to get good voices please let me know.

You can find freeware downloads of both TTS engines and Hal-compatible characters at The Agentry (http://www.agentry.net).

Search under AT&T Labs Natural Voices.
This discussion is interesting and all that but...
What I was really asking about was a legit way of getting better voices. P2P is a wonderful technology, but I don't mind paying a reasonable price in reference to how I would use the voices. I'm hoping that someone may eventually create third party voices that are compatible with AT&T Natural Voices and are cheaper. Or maybe I could find an inexpensive TTS program that has the voice engine and some voices included? Or maybe there is an academically priced software that has AT&T Natural Voices built in or ?
That's my 2 cents anyhow...

I hear what you are saying. There just aren't any good free voices out there. They all sound horrible compared to the AT&T natural voices, which I think are over priced to say the least. I know that isn't a good reason to go P2P, but there you have it. Hal sounds absolutely great with the crystal voice.
