I would like to find out if is there a simple solution to use Hal for english teaching. I would like to create a Brain that only answers to specific questions:
Example:
"My name is Frank. What is yours?"
"Hi Frank. I'm Mary."
or
What is the capital of France?
I don't know. Would you tell me?
Is this possible?
Thanks

I don't think there is a "simple solution" that doesn't require massive editing. Hal is designed to either run the main databases which give it a wide range of response, or start with an empty brain.
The first requires you to remove many, many entries, some from what appears to be a read only table (you might have to write a script), the second requires you to add every single thing you want Hal to say.
At the very least, the second will give you practice on your English if that's what you want, and when you are done Hal will only say what you want.
If you want Hal as an interactive phrase book of a sort, you might want to look at something simpler like "Karl chatbot". It just has a straight text file. Slow and simpleminded, but easy to cram with info.
Otherwise Hal will do what you want, and very well, just not without significant input from you.

I think AnswerPad will do what you want.
To make more personal, you can use microsoft agents with it.

Enjoy.

hi. i understand that mr M. is going to migrate the capitals function to the main database... this will enable us to add that script. and manually update the database table with the brain editor.
Patience is the key ... the new release is eagerly awaited

Thank you for all!
I am teaching English to Hungarians here. I put together a few programs in a high tech computerized classroom, I named it Virtual English Systems. Students are learning English with Power point pres. Interactive Chat, etc. However kids love to chat with Hal, but there is too much stuff in it.
Thanks again
I will have many other questions soon.
