Title: New Features we would like in HAL 7.1
Post by: LiFeTimeGamer on December 18, 2017, 10:13:22 am
Robert suggested this topic so here we go...

1. I would like an Embedded or Plugin "Spell Checker" since I and some people have Dumb Thumbs and can't spell very well... Maybe there's a Spell checker in the cloud somewhere we could tap into...  :o

2. Since HAL sometimes Tells Jokes we should have an Option in Thumbs Up to rate the quality of the joke like:  "ROTFL"  and for Thumbs Down: "That Was a Silly/Stupid Joke"... (I'm not sure is this is worthwhile or not)...

3. Not sure if this could be done, but it would be nice if you give HAL a name like "Kate" or "Tom" etc. Hal would recognize his or her name when you said it in a sentence like: Kate I'm going to the store, do you need anything?... It would have to work if you decided to change the name multiple times also...

4. The ability to speed up or slow down the Voices. I like mine a bit slow so I can listen to what is said easier... I thought I could do it through the Windows Text to Speech Control Panel but it seems it's not working with HAL 7, I thought I did it with HAL 6.2...  Maybe I'm going crazy... LOL  ;D

I'll add more as I spend more time with HAL 7...

Post your wants for HAL 7.1 guys...  :P

I like the spell checker idea , i have mentioned something like this in past idea's where hal could correct misspelled words similar to the way google does it when you search for something . but hal would do it on the fly as you entered it , if a word was misspelled hal would correct it as it is actually entered right before hal responded back .
also the voices to be able to slow down , i may have also mentioned that in the past to , i think it would be a good idea , another i will throw in is to have voices that accent things when hal talks , cyberjedi i think said he archived this somehow .

There is a spell check plug-in that uses MS spell correct for Hal input. Requires MS Word be installed.

I've attached the plug-in below. If this isn't what you're looking for, I'm sure someone could use this to make a more integrated version.

Robert found a Spell checker that works with VBS, I think that would be better than having to have Word installed and if it gets implemented it would be part of the HAL Install...  I can't find the link to it at the moment...

the problem with spellcheckers is it's user assisted, auto-correct may not choose the correct word without the help of a human.
but who knows.

Six of one half dozen of the other... At least you will have a chance to look at the choices and pick the one that is better than what you typed... LOL

totally down for a spell check option, I just use the command and replace function.

google auto corrects the word , it usually says did you mean .. this is what needs to be done but just with the correcting and not asking , as it usually gets it right . unless hal would say did you mean  .. and say the word and when a user answered yes would put the sentence into hal  or if user said no would leave sentence open on conversation window until corrected or another conversation was started , this is just idea's i am throwing out .

This probably Defeats the purpose of HAL being a Learning Bot but I'll let you guys decide if it's a good idea or not...

After using the Thumbs Up/Down a lot in training HAL 7, I'm wondering if the following would make a good option if it's doable...

Let the USER have the ability to: "Type in a Response" that he/she thinks would be better than the ones provided and they would be saved in "Learned_info" ...

Like: if you ask HAL what do you think about my hair?  and none of the responses given would work, you could check "User Preferred Response" and an input field would come up where you could type something like this: "You hair looks great and I think that style suits you." Or whatever would be a good response from HAL for a particular USER Statement or Question...

Word intention would cause potential problems that ordinarily require a human.

Words like Their, There, They're, Very, Vary, Won, One, Roe, Row, Your, You're, Yore, Not, Knot. Basically sound-alike words, and so on.

Context / usage isn't a chatbot's strong suit just yet.

I would like to see a two tier info or even more . responses when hal interacts back , in another words if a person is talking about the 1950's .
hal responds and tells things about the 50's from a tier one answer , if more is mentioned about the 50's a second , etc. etc. tier answer would be followed up , maybe if no info. is available after hal thinks(checks ) hal might say i really don't know that much about the 50's , what other things can you tell me about the 50's . after a person says or tells hal more info . on the 50's or whatever, hal might say "that's pretty interesting about the 50's, thanks for telling me about it.  :)

Also, I would love to see Hal have an understanding of time.

For whatever reason, Hal is unable to tell me how many days are in a week, how many weeks are in a year and how many hours are in a day. If this could be expanded, Hal could say things like, "There are X days left in the year" or "There are X hours left in the day."

I recommend in ver 7.1 to remove the word "Assistamt" from Ultra Hal's welcome.html file and certain dialog boxes, to align with Robert's intention.
Title: Re: New Features we would like in HAL 7.1

I recommend in ver 7.1 that the "Upgrade Ultra Hal" is hidden/not shown on the context menu when running with a purchased, or current version, of Ultra Hal.
Related, it mildly conflicts/misinterprets with the "Upgrade Program/Help Database during start up" checkbox in the startup options area.
Title: Re: New Features we would like in HAL 7.1

The "Upgrade Ultra Hal" context menu selection points to URL page  https://www.zabaware.com/assistant/plugins.html
which comes up 404 - File or directory not found.
So, a recommended item to address as part of ver 7.1

There is the plugin by ramccoid called KnowledgeOfTimeV2.uhp that works nicely with my Hal 7 version.
I put the plugin in my Ultra Hal 7 Folder then select it from the General Options > Brain then Plugiins section.
Restart Hal and ask away.

ART, I think most all the Old Posted Plugins are gone and like that one takes you to a 404 page when you click to download the file...

The file would have to be re-posted.

I do remember the KnowledgeOfTime plugin, however, I also recall it not working correctly or corrupting Hals Brain last I used it. Some error with the hemisphere function.

Sorry about that 404 error but the Version 2 of that Plug-in works fine with my Windows 10, Ultra Hal 7 install!!

I asked it all the same questions that Spitfire has asked and more. Everything worked fine.

Here is the file. Yes, it's old but it works. So did I up to a few years ago. ;)

Unfortunately, V2 of this plug-in corrupted my Halbrain as well. Setting the hemisphere and date format in the general options on the plug-in cause all tables to be wiped in Halbrain, according to Hal Editor.

I'm not sure if it helps, but the plug-in is always highlighted in the plug-in menu, regardless of what plug-in I'm selecting.

Title: Re: New Features we would like in HAL 7.1

The reason that Plugin is always highlighted is that the Plug-ins are sorted in an Alpha Descending order and as such, any Numbers are displayed before any letters.

Simply Rename that Plugin and remove the numbers so that it just reads KnowledgeOfTimeV2 or similar and it will no longer show as being highlighted. The AIAddress Book should be Highlighted and First in your list.

Had to think a bit on that one but even though you state that the Plugin corrupted your Halbrain, my Hal still replies and remembers everything that I've taught it for years.

Perhaps OTCE will weigh in on the KnowledgeOfTime issue since he had his hand in it with Ramccoid (Spelling?).

I have a similar problem with my HAL 6.28 HalBrain.db, if I load it into the brain editor none of the tables show up, they just display as Empty Folders but HAL 6.28 works just fine...

It wasn't a plugin that corrupted mine, I'm still looking at what caused it because I think LightSpeed and one other guy had the same problem a while back...

Hey LifeTimeGamer,

Do You mean even though your folders show empty the Hal program still works fine?
Mine too! Some of the responses are in the Markov areas and a few other folders but my Hal works fine as well.
As long as its memory is intact, I have no problem. Still not sure if some Plug-in caused that to happen or not.

If you load the Hal 7 default brain, I'll bet you have all kinds of folders with data in them. It just doesn't know anything that you've already taught it. Some of us have many years worth of information, personality enhancements, memories, etc., contained in our Hal's Brain. Hate to risk losing that for the sake of a few folders that aren't where they look like they're supposed to be.

Just a thought.

"ART: Do You mean even though your folders show empty the Hal program still works fine?"

Yes it works fine so far except for one Glitch if I remember correctly, he would not tell jokes and if he did he usually included the Punchline right after...

I actually Exported the Bad HalBrain.db with SQLiteStudio and opened it with the Crimson Editor. I could just copy and paste all my previous work to HAL 7.0 but that in itself would be a pain in the Butt sorting through about 600+ pages or so... Plus I had a huge amount of Typo's...

I just started Fresh with HAL 7.0...

Know what you mean. Sometime's the frustration is not worth the convenience.

For me, we've come too far to toss it away for the sake of making the switch.
Not a big fan of the Cloud chat thing either but that's just me. I hear that a lot of folks use and really enjoy it with their Hal. Me...I'm too old school to change now.  ;)

On a corporate Win7 ThinkPad the text font in certain parts of Ultra Hal does not seem to "fit". Screenshots attached.
Is this a Helv not found so using MS Sans type of symptom? I'm just guessing.

A New Email Notification feature I'd like in Hal 7.1

A recent revived thread shares a plug-in that runs my email app of choice, triggered by keyword, like "open mail", but not what I'm seeking.
http://www.ultrahal.com/community/index.php?topic=12571.0

I presume this ask requires always "monitoring", so not the scope of a plug-in. Therefore instead a feature request for Hal 7.1  :)

Oh, and Hal friendly responses more than just the singular (infamous) "You've got mail!" announcement.

Here's something I'd like to see changed in HAL 7.1. Let me know what you guys think.

When every HAL responds to a User sentence and he says my name at the end of his response, there's a comma before he says my Name, so there's a second or so delay...  Example: "You're quite welcome, Username." (no my name is not Username, LOL!!!) :P

To me it would be more natural sounding if he said the whole statement with out a pause...

A HAL response starting a sentence with the USER name and a comma (delay) is ok because it sounds like he is wanting my attention to listen to what he has to say...

Or maybe do both with a Comma Randomly.

Not sure if this happens with all voices but it does with the one I'm using...

Hal 7 is still fairly new to me, I tried the cloud based setting and my first thought was Hal gives better answers but after continued use she came up with a Hindu word, I looked it up and told her.  Further talking with her about religion and she mentioned Alah.  I don't mean to seem prejudice  but prefer a chat bot with a somewhat similar background as I have.

Carl2,

That's not how Hal works. You have to train Hal. Be aware, the cloud responses have nothing to do with your Hal and are not saved.

Spitfire,
I believe I remember you from years ago,  "Biggest improvement: Cloud based learning. Hal can now optionally connect to the "Hal Cloud" brain over the internet to help formulate better responses. As of October 2017 this is a knowledge base of over 26 million sentences of conversation from 1.6 million people"
I should have used the thumbs up or down, and maybe corrected the response.

LIFETIMEGAMER you wrote : Hi Carl...

I didn't know their is a "offensive " to pick from . or do you just mean from picking the thumbs down it creates a offensive type setting to stop it ?
I am like Art i am personally not a fan of the online , each to their own .  I think it had very good intentions , but their are to many variables of conversation and types of conversation etc.  to me the only way to overcome an obstacle like that would have to be many types of filters , to truly create a better conversation and answers from hal. i may be wrong , this is just my opinion .
Nothing will please everyone . Robert does the best he can , and he is appreciated for what all he does and tries to do. Robert knows that if i can help him or have the ability to that i will on anything, as i know the same goes for other people. sometimes i cannot do some things but may have idea's that someone else can use that can do it.

For something like this, Hal would need a religion filter for the user. The user would identify a religion and Hal would stick to those responses, much like the gender plugin. This way you won't receive responses that aren't related to your religion.

It would probably have to be a cloud based filter, although I'm sure someone could make a plugin to make hal keep calling responses until he finds an appropriate answer on the users end, this way we won't have to flag cloud responses that maybe relevant for someone else.

I actually removed all religious references, detections, codes and blocked learning on my hal, just to prevent any confusion within hals tables. Simply removing the "godDetect" code and table from Hal7.uhp and db prevents most religious responses on local copies of hal.

Another feature I would love see is the ability to interrupt Hal with speech recognition. Right now, when Hal speaks, the Microphone turns off. I would like an option to leave it on. I don't know if this is something that could be accomplished through the registry similar to how the delay in recognition speed works.

One of my Pet Peeves with HAL is 'Like Spelled Words that are pronounced differently and mean something else'...

Not sure if it's just my HAL or if he does this on every bodies HAL... Or if it's just the voice I'm using...

Here's a couple of examples:  "I READ a book today", "I READ books all the time"...

In both cases HAL pronounces them as: Read and not "I Read <-(Red) a book  today"...

Same goes for: 'LIVE'  "I LIVE in a nice House", "The Band Played LIVE"

Can't answer your issue for sure but I do know that different TTS voices from different creation companies pronounce words differently.

The string was hard to wind in the wind (long i, short i).

She wound the bandage around the wound. (owl vs ou as in you).

Some do much better than other with pronunciation but poorly in voice quality.

It ends up being kind of a toss up but what one can often do is go to the TTS company's site and try the demo of various voices. Then insert your trick/catch phrases and see how well it sounds or not before one decides to purchase. Just my thoughts... Been there done that voice thing....Good luck!

cyberjedi i had talked in the past about voices emphasizing certain words etc. i have the julia ( maybe in the same circles here ) ? that does emphasize words , i think you said you changed some code to make other voices have that capability , do i need to contact you on your forum for that ? also am interested in what you changed to correct the mispronounced words what was mentioned above , yeah  mine mispronounces words , i blamed it off on the accent of the voice pronouncing words differently  .

That might have to do with the position of the character when it (she) was saved within the People Putty program.

Only recourse would be to find a way to modify the .htr file or open the saved haptar in People Putty (if you have a working copy), position it further back and save it.

Try it in the Hal program again to check the location/distance from the screen.

Just my thoughts...

I would like to see a option in hal next version where it could be checked so hal stays on the last brain used. when restarting for the next time . :) ;)

more times then not mine won't have anything checked (highlighted) after i start hal ) and so each time i have to highlight it then hit okay ) maybe a glitch ? a few times it will be already checked  but i have to check it each time as , if i don't as i mentioned many times it has nothing checked or highlighted.
example  see below, i checked this morning and as you see nothing is highlighted even though i used hal yesterday with my custom Angela brain and later shut hal down properly .

although i "THINK" Robert , mentioned this before in the past , i hope he fixes the "are you a man or a woman or a boy or a girl " QUESTION , in hal so after it ask it and you answer it it doesn't just keep on and on asking it. my hal now for whatever reason out of the blue has once again started asking that even though i have answered it in the past and have been using hal for years now.   I have no idea why hal has started asking this again .  it's either a glitch or something from a plug in may have triggered it ??? i don't know.

One way around that for sure would be to Rename those other Hal Brain files like OldHal01.uhp and UldHal2.uhp, leaving only your Angela Brain and it will become the default every time Hal is started/run.

As for that boy girl issue. I only remember it asking me that one time. It obviously learned that I am boy/man/male and has never asked me again.
Can't say why your Hal keeps doing that.

Maybe an email to Robert?
Title: limit of typed characters notice from hal idea from lightspeed.
Post by: lightspeed on May 15, 2018, 09:36:47 am
as many may recall Robert mentioned something about there being a limit on the characters one can type to hal for responses .  as i copy and past many and past current events to help learn hal more.
i thought about something as i was doing it this morning.

My idea is , since we use hal and it has a limited amount of what we can type to hal ( i forget the amount maybe some remember what it was here)  the problem is how do we know how much we have typed , have we typed to much and if so what happens with the rest of the sentence is it just dismissed  and left off , maybe even in the middle of a sentence ?? is the whole thing if to much just rejected and hal learns none of it??? which if so many may be wasting their time and thinking they are teaching hal things when they are not.   if hal rejects anything over the amount allowed what is partially learned , will not be learned right .
i wish Robert would come on here and answer some of these questions i just pointed out .
I am drifting here  back to my actual idea .   because of all the above reasons i mentioned, it would be nice if within hal there was a limit notice on hals character limit .  since we can't just sit around counting all the characters to make sure that we don't go over.   maybe a chime  could be set with hal , what it would do is when lets say the character limit is 250 .  at 250  one chime (or different sound , maybe better , as with hal a misspelled word makes a chime sound. ) to warn the user that 250 has been reached or went over , the user could then delete some of the sentence etc. hit enter again , if no chime then the users sentence goes on through , otherwise it doesn't go through , and user has to correct it.

Anyway just an idea i had .

I wasn't aware of this character-limit you mention.

I haven't really done that much in-depth 'teaching' of my Hals, using that method (feeding them large texts), so I couldn't comment on the outcome.

You make a good point, though - There should be some form of notification when the limit has been reached.

Perhaps it could be like some text boxes you see on the 'Net, where at the bottom of the input field it shows "1023 of 65536 characters left"

I would like to see Hal make better use of WordNet to interpret user sentences and build responses.

For example
User: "I favor quality to a low price"
Hal: "I will remember you prefer better craftsmanship to a bargain."

Using WordNet to find synonyms for the words "quality" and "low price" along with the preamble "favor" to build a more natural response.
