Hello jon,

I have XP Home, I dont rember how but I was able to get marys voice to show up in the list you want, I had sam, mary and mike in the computers default voice list. It can be done I just dont rember how I done it before. so keep trying it will work. you may need a different down load from microsoft. do you have all your current updates to the XP pro avialable from MS. check and make sure they are always coming out with new updates.

you need an AOL AIM screen name first. goto AOL's website a sign up for a AIM screen name. then put that name and password in the slots available. It should work after that.[]

Hi,

As you have seen, I have made a few posts and sugestions, but my experiece with vb script is all but nonexistent. Can anyone make some suggestions as to how I might improve my knowledge on this.

Plus can any one help me understand how and where to make changes in the 5.0 since it doesnt have the brain editor yet. I know some use notepad to edit the brain files, but I dont know which ones you can or cant edit or where to make the additions, ie;the lunch brain, the knock knock joke brain, the question answer brain. I would like to not mess it up and always have to start again.

Any help on this would be apreciated. I'll still give suggestions and ideas as I can think up of any.

You might have a bad install plus it can be very cpu intensive when using the mic. try to reinstall Hal using the repair in the options. you may want to check you mic settings as well.You may need to train the speech program to recognize your voice as well. Try to amke sure you use a good quality mic and in a semi-quiet to mostly quiet area. Some mic pic up outside noise as static and cause them to display words when none are being said. keep you tv down and the raido volume down as well. Some or all of these could be the problem, if not try removing the program and reinstalling from fresh, if it happens again you may have a bad copy. Check your mic setting first before unistalling it may just be configured wrong.

Hello Tinman,

I have had this problem with 4.5 as well as 5.0 in the past. The only way I could stop it was to leave it alone in the msconfig. and jsut disable it in the options. It may take a few time reconfiguring it when it asks and restarting your pc but it will stop the error. I have been able to both alow it to autoload at sign on or start as a program from the all programs menu. I hope this helps in some way.

Hi,

Have you ever forced hal to quit using the taskmanager. if you have hal recieves this as an improper shutdown and stores it somewhere int the brain files, i dont know where. the only way I could stop the error message was to reconfigure hal. its a pain sometimes when it does that, did you choose the option to have hal only start from the start programs option if it is still set to start on windows start and you have disabled it by msconfig this may cause the error. it is reading that hal was not allowed to start when it was requested to.

Hello Case,

I too have noticed the right click menu not disapearing if no choice is made, I have ususaly had to choose a choice and then click cancel.

I have not had the learning level restet itself yet. or the offline one but I will watch for them on mine as well.

Even if you are on Aol and Dial up get a D/L manager like Mass Downloader form metaproducts it can speed up the d/l and even allows for pauses and resume at late time or date with out restarting from the begining. It open multiple threads to the site to help improve d/l speed, it will save the partial d/l to finish at later time if you need it to as well. on my dial up at 24.0 kbs it took 17 hours total that was with browsing and runing AOL AIM and a few pauses and restarts.

I think your problem is in the phrasing of the words using play right before the word might be causing hal to think you want him/her to start the program, ie; footbal, hence ther error not in database. Try rephrasing the sentence and seeing what happens. I believe play is one of the key words to cause hal to start a program or application.[:I]

Any Info for the new should always be apreciated, it could make other peoples setup  simpler, maybe they dont learn the hard way by doing onself but it is better to have help then no help. I may make the difference between continued use and discard for those that dont like hassle. I like to learn the old fashioned way by trial and error but some help now and then is always nice to have.
Keep up the work for as long as Robert wishes to Allow it on the forum.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Script takes longer than expected error

Hello everyone, what size Virtual memmory page are you using it may not be big enough. My VM Page file is aout 763 mb.  I had 256 mb and it ran fine a about an average of 6 to 8 seconds on the Q/A I on have 64 Mb Video ram but the figures work ok except for the lack of lip syncing on some words. I have recently upgrade memory to 512 MB ram and I run XP Home on a Hp Pavilion using a 1.9 Ghz Intel Celeron CPU, have you defraged your hard drives recently that can slow things down on slower pc's. What size is your hard drives mine is 40 gig only. If you have and Intel CPU check at intels site they have a optimiser that increase's the speed of the read rite transfers to the hard drives, see if yours is compatable with it, it might help. If you use a laptop you cand disable the power save feature and it will improve on the performance at cost of bat life. I have yet to encounter the Time Out POP UP yet.
