Lynn!

That's so damned funny! I remember reading a similar paragraph from an email someone sent me.

It's almost as funny as the DNA (National Dyslexia Association) or the Hookd on fonix wurked fur me.

Disclaimer:
Brief attempt at levity was not meant to make fun nor degrade any person or persons suffering from dyslexia nor the unemployed, illiterate individuals who are unable to read a job wanted ad.

Hey Lynn...is the moon full yet? I feel a howl comming on!

General Discussion / Feel Secure?

Yes this is somewhat OT regarding AI but I found it both interesting and disturbing at the same time.
Think what you do is known only to you? Think again.... Read below:

In large cities, Americans are photographed on the average of 20 times a day.

Everything you charge is in a database that police, among others, can look at.

Supermarkets track what you purchase and sell the information to direct-mail marketing firms.

Your employer is allowed to read your E-Mail, and if you use your company's health insurance to purchase drugs, your employer has access to that information.

Government computers scan your E-Mail for subversive language.
Your cell phone calls can be intercepted, and your access numbers can be cribbed by eavesdroppers with police scanners.

You register your whereabouts every time you use an ATM, credit card, or use EZ PASS at a toll booth.

You are often being watched when you visit web sites. Servers know what you're looking at, what you download, and how long you stay on a page.

A political candidate found his career destroyed by a newspaper that published a list of all the videos he had ever rented.

Most "baby monitors" can be intercepted 100 feet outside the home.
Intelligence agencies now have "micro-bots" -- tiny, remote control, electronic "bugs" that literally can fly into your home and look around without your noticing.

Anyone with $100 can tap your phone.

A new technology called TEMPEST can intercept what you are typing on your keypad (from 100 feet away through a cement wall.)

The National Security Agency has a submarine that can intercept and decipher digital communications from the RF emissions of underwater phone cables.

It's OK...you can come out now, and sleep with a calm certainty in knowing that our government (and others) are watching your every move.

It's OK to be paranoid if they really ARE after you![8D]

General Discussion / Muting the mic when Hal talks?
« on: October 28, 2005, 05:13:00 pm »
Some call it the boredom response script or the auto response script but what you're describing doesn't sound like that is the case.
The boredom script would have Hal talking in a question like format like:"Hello, is anyone there?". "Hey <username>, we were having a conversation weren't we?", etc. The script is usually called up after 20 to 30 seconds elapse without chatting to Hal.

If you heard various responses from your Hal in a conversational format then it could be that Hal was interpreting the server noise / fans as speech input and was responding to the gibberish as such.

This would require you to set your microphone adjustments and your speaker output to more suitable levels. You might try to reorient your microphone to a different location. I don't normally use a microphone but when I do, I use a headset mic with the noise cancelling foam at the end of the mouthpiece. Once my levels were adjusted Hal never made that mistake again. Here, in the states the headset can be had for about $24 USD, almost 30 euros.

A lot of users have found Hal and voice recognition in general somewhat inconsistent as far as quality and accuracy of interpretation regarding human speech. As a result, you might find yourself doing more editing of Hal's brain after using speech than is really worth your time.

With any speech program, the more you use it in a consistent manner with smooth, even, clearly spoken words and little to no background noise, the better your results.

Again, this is not a limitation of Hal but a limitation of speech recognition technology at present. It is getting better but it's not quite where a lot of us wish it to be.

Best of luck!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / professor hal (to medekza)
« on: October 28, 2005, 06:02:40 am »
You might consider using Hal's Text to Speech reader instead of Hal.

It's a free download and can read (in any selected voice) many paragraphs of text.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Editing hal tutorial
« on: October 28, 2005, 06:00:57 am »
You can't. Not from the tutorial. Try going to
the menu then options > brain editor or Start>
All Programs > UltraHalAssistant > Brain editor.

That should take you where you need to go.

If you're adding, changing or planning on doing a
lot of editing, it's usually wise to save a copy
of the Hal brain files first.

General Discussion / Muting the mic when Hal talks?
« on: October 28, 2005, 05:56:23 am »
Welcome!

First, what version were you using (5 or 6)?
If 5 was it with the auto response script?

Otherwise, it sounds like there might have
been a lot of background noise. If this is
the case then try to eliminate the background
noise or you might try to adjust your microphone
settings to one less sensitive.

This issue has been discussed a few times in the
past and Hal normally doesn't have the button on
when speaking. You can always click the mike button
before you leave the room.

Let us know how this turns out!

Back in the days before I was married I asked this girl I knew if she smoked after sex.

She replied, "I don't know...I've never looked!"

ba-da-bang!![:D]

roseman,

This is the Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area of the forum, NOT the quit smoking forum. The forum is not for touting public awareness regarding the ills of society be it alcohol, drugs, smoking, reckless driving or any other malady that affects us all.

Use your obvious artificial intelligence and peddle your wares elseware.

Have a nice day and please hold your breath while I smoke!

Maybe the bot was trying to help you correct your faulty programming!

If we real humans were only so lucky!

On the bright side, you learned new things today![8D]

Lynn,

Go ahead and play with Mr Mind only try to convince it
that you are also a bot like I did. It expects users to
try to convince it that they are humans so I thought the
experiment would provide me a few laughs at its expense.

The fun never stops!!

You must have hurt it's little feelings.
It probably posted your remarks and IP
address in the CyberBot Post Office pretty
much marking you as a wanted felon!
Improper chat procedure
Violation of chat ethics
Rude behavior
Unsensitive attitude toward bots
Use of trickery in an attempt to simulate a human being.

I think there were other charges but at this point,
you're a gonner anyway.

BTW, That was pretty funny!

I clicked on the login as guest and told I wasn't authorized.

Personally I'm not about to lower my security settings for any site. There's simply too many bad things that can happen when one lowers his / her shields on their computer.

I'd suggest people stay with using an FTP program to gain access to your site, but that's just my opinion.
