differences between trial and full version
« on: May 24, 2007, 08:20:24 am »
I dont yet have a copy of ultra hal, but im trying the 30 day trial. it sounds like it would be really good, but the trial version seems... a bit rubbish really. it cant tell me the date, and when i ask it to perform a simple multiplication it opens a search page. i'd really like to get the full version but it seems a bit of a waste if its like this.
so basically my question is how does the trial compare to teh full version, and is the intelligence limited on the trial or something?

That shouldn't happen with the trial or the full version, are you typing or speaking to Hal and can you post some transcripts of your conversation? The options menu gives you a chance to View/Save Conversation, you could cut and paste it into your next post. Knowing exactly what you said and exactly what Hal replied will let us understand what is happening better.

Hal is not intelligent as such, it cannot vary its response based on its own thoughts and desires, it simply analyses your input and uses a set of rules to develop a response based upon prescripted phrases and your history of input.

For instance if you input "What is the date", you will probably not get today's date. It will probably store an entry that asserts that "What" can be defined as something called "the date". "What" is "the date".

But if you ask "What is today's date?", you should get what you want. It recognizes that question because that's the way it was scripted. It can't understand language, it can only compare text.

It is possible to adapt Hal's abilities or add new ones as you go along, in fact, it's possible that a plugin has already been made to improve its ability to respond to such questions. Search for "Human Time" or "Human date" I forget which.

Math should be straigforward, "3+3", "what is 3+3" and "What is three plus three" should all work.

Further training, even with the shareware version, will help immensely. Both you and Hal need training to some extent, you - to know when it needs detail and when it doesn't (reading the scripts helps) and Hal - to accumulate a variety of its own responses based upon you and the way you use it.

Hope that helps.
