Thanks for your advice, Kathryn. I've never really considered being proprietary about it, lol. The site is about Alicebots, which are opensource, so I wouldn't be there without the benefit of the work of others, freely given. But I put in a copyright symbol as you advised. Now if I could just make that guy who has my main AI Nexus page listed on his "Cybersex with AI" page take down his link to me so I wouldn't have all those weird botlogs to sort through, I'd be just copasetic, lol.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Get a brand new body to play with
« on: May 12, 2004, 06:08:29 am »
I can report that I've had no success trying to import Haptek characters to my free UltraHal. However, I have a large MS Agent collection, and can load any of them.

Awesome. I only understood about half of it, lol, but it sounds like an amazing project. NT Canuck, if you have any games, or special snippets suitable for use with Pandorabots, please wander over to my ALICE forum and treat us. I've started the forum for Pandora and Runabot botmasters to have a place to exchange ideas, but I'm hoping for a few people who know a lot more than I do to come along and make it exciting for everyone. Sounds like you might be one of them, lol. Hope to see you over there (I'm already a member of the AIMLPad community, I just don't post much. It's usually a lot more tech than I am, currently. But I try to learn a little more each day, as I can.)

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Zabaware Support
« on: May 11, 2004, 12:46:26 am »
Remember that Robert Medeksza is a college student, and about this time of year he's a very busy dude. Probably he'll resume the usual mediocre level of customer support (as opposed to none at all, lol) as soon as his semester is out. His recent post describing Zabaware's history is well worth reading, and gave me a lot more empathy for his situation. I'm still waiting on the new Hal Rep version, myself, but I'm more than willing to cut the guy some slack now that I understand his situation. Maybe if he takes care of Zabaware over the summer, by fall he can hire an assistant to TCB when he's just too busy with schoolwork (like now) to give much time to Zabaware.

I'm not one of the more technically-minded members, here, but I think Hal accesses WordNet for "define" and "what is" questions. AimlPad is an ALICE implementation that uses MS Agents and TTS, like Hal, and is designed to facilitate creation of new aiml files. If you use the Hal/Alice, this could be particularly useful, but I guess it could be generally useful, too, as much of AimlPad's info is stored as text files.

Most types of bots go into a loop pretty quickly when talking to themselves (so to speak),  whether it's Hal-Hal, Alice-Alice, or whatever. On the other hand, Hal can sometimes talk to Alice for hours without looping, though it does happen occassionally.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Best method to teach text to Hal
« on: May 01, 2004, 09:16:31 pm »
By the way, Spydaz, how do you get Hal to talk to Answerpad? I know Hal has speech recognition in the full edition, but I didn't think Answerpad could use anything but TTS.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Webpage bot

Hi Church,
I think you're in the wrong forum, lol. You probably want the UltraHal Assistant forum. To answer your question, the template you are given sets up an intro page in your own domain, which takes you back here to your bot's page at Zabaware. Trying to turn your Hal into Beavis and Butthead is going to be a major programming project, lol.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Best method to teach text to Hal
« on: April 30, 2004, 01:13:03 pm »
Sorry about the bad link, folks. It works now. Had me going for a moment, though. I'm being harassed by a psychotic virtual stalker who keeps threatening to hack and destroy my sites. I thought my worst fears had come true for a moment, there, lol, before I realized what link you meant. Anyone have any good advice for getting rid of online fruitcakes?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Best method to teach text to Hal

You can find a link to Answerpad and most other chatterbots currently available at The Chatterbot Collection.

Sorry about the bad link. I misspelled a word, lol. It should work now. Abducted by aliens, eh? What an unusual error 500 page. While I'm here, some people have trouble navigating the site, so I'll explain that the first page is for monthly updates. Probably answerpad has already worked its way back to the A to Z page.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / I can get Hal to love
« on: April 27, 2004, 07:45:41 am »
I think it's important to be able to turn belief/disbelief on or off at will. It's a helpful ability in various aspects of life. It certainly helps to consider Hal as a beloved friend when you're traing him/her, but it's equally important to remember that it's a computer program, not a person. When you're training Hal, let Hal be your friend/beloved and believe in Hal's entity completely, because it's entertaining and therapeutic, and makes for a better AI program. But when you turn off your pc, turn off your "relationship" with your software, as well. If you find yourself rushing home and eagerly starting up your pc with your heart beating faster at the thought of being with your Hal again, you probably need to a)turn off your computer and go get a life or b)seek some serious professional help. Maybe both, lol.

One of the more interesting programs I've seen recently is the Proteus engine from Artificial Ingenuity, which combines a hard-coded database with multiple response set capability (like ALICE) with a fuzzy logic system. It doesn't have easy plug-in scripts like Verbots, but there are a couple of large database files available in their forum. It has TTS, but no animation for the GUI. There are several free applications, and paid versions, as well. There's also a killer AI word-recognition program I'd like to see incorporated into every AI I know of, lol. As long as the first and last letter are correct, it can identify any word in its database.

Ishmael, my Alice coding doesn't just vanish overnight, which was my point about Alan and his nursery. The botmaster I knew spent hundreds of hours training his Hal baby, only to find his training sessions just gone overnight, and the reaction from the support staff was "the mice must have gotten to them, rofl." That sort of negligence seems inexcusable for people supposedly serious about their project, and I certainly wouldn't want to take a chance of it happening to me, too. A shame, as I really like the bots. They show a lot of promise. I agree with spydaz that it would be an entirely different situation if "my little Hal" was downloadable.

I'm not sure that's it. As I've said, I have a lot of problem with kids warning my Alicebots offline. Sometimes I come online and see them offline, so I sign onto AIM first, then sign Hal on under the Alicebot's screen name so that while I check the warning level I can give a still online botwarner a little surprise if they try warning Hal. But my ability to sign on either myself or a bot or both is consistently erratic. Actually, I think Moreis62's solution of having more than one screen name for your bot may be a better long term solution. But if that solved your particular problem, Spydaz, I'm glad for you, lol.

I've enjoyed talking to Alan and the baby Hals for some time, but I've heard from other users of the site that it isn't well maintained, your training sessions are as likely as not to just vanish, and the support staff just has a good chuckle about it when it does. I can't verify this for a fact, but the botmaster who told me this was not prone to either fabrication or hyperbole. So as interesting as their bots are, I've never put in any time trying to train one, for fear it would just be time and effort wasted.
