I think it may just be something weird at AIM. I've been having trouble logging in my Hal, my Alicebots, and occassionally even myself. If it times out before connecting, wait about 10 minutes before trying again. Apparently trying to force it when it's timed out just adds to the time it will take to clear up. AIM also just disconnects my Alicebots from time to time. The most frequent reason (other than being warned offline by churlish teens) is sending too many messages per minute. If this happens too many times in a row, the connection is lost.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Alice/Hal
« on: April 23, 2004, 10:18:16 am »
This sounds very cool. I plan to try it and hope it works. But the "when Alice doesn't have an answer" part sort of bothers me. Alice ALWAYS has an answer. Sometimes not a good one, but she always has an answer. Does the mix just eliminate the * aiml or something?

I'm sending your .jpg to a friend of mine who make CyberBuddy skins. If there's any similarity between the two processes, he may send it back completed in a day or two.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / MSN Possibilities
« on: April 17, 2004, 08:39:24 am »
I have an Alicebot at Runabot.com, and their main page says that both MSN and Yahoo have recently decided to exclude "third-party clients," which is what bots are, from their messaging services. I don't know if Hal functions in instant messaging the same way as an Alicebot does, but if so, the idea is officially exlcuded, for the moment.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Attention Mr. Robert E. Medeksza
« on: April 11, 2004, 09:19:42 am »
This may or may not be pertinent, but we're approaching the time when, a while back, Robert Medeksza said he'd have a new version of the UltraHal Representative ready, so they won't lie crashed on our webpages most of the time like they do now. Perhaps he's been feverishly programming for several weeks and just hasn't noticed the time. Or maybe he's been abducted by UFO's, or returned to the future from whence he came. Or something. Is this guy married or anything? Maybe Don or someone should call the proper authorities in his hometown to go by and see if there are any obvious odors of human decay emanating from his home, or anything.

AI have done all sorts of things: generated music, written books, created art. Check out the AI artist, AARON http://www.kurzweilcyberart.com/index.html

Ultra Hal 7.0 / MS agent characters don't work
« on: March 27, 2004, 05:08:33 am »
Check to be sure you have MS Agent installed. You might have deleted it somehow in the process of reinstalling Windows. If you don't have all the MS Agent components, you would only be able use the characters that come with Hal.

Hard to believe that someone who spells so poorly could write such an advanced script. I think I'll be waiting for vonsmith or someone here who knows their business to check it out before I download it to my pc, lol.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Cognitive science in Hal?

I think Bill must be referring to Peter Plantec's book "Virtual Humans." The website for it is here Welcome to Virtual Humans

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Error message with characters
« on: March 23, 2004, 07:31:15 am »
Be sure you have MS Agent installed on your computer. Some older pcs don't have it. Then any MSAgent character (like desktopmates) needs to go to that C/Windows/MSAgents/Chars file. That should enable you to use them with Hal.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Please help
« on: March 18, 2004, 10:10:07 pm »
If you want a bot you can teach everything, it's probably much easier just to start with a different bot, such as Billy, Daisy, Chloe, Dobot, Proteus, Speak, Answerpad, Protege, etc. The virtue of bots such as Hal or Alice is the vast knowledgebase they come equipped with, and modifying from there.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Remembering Names!!!
« on: March 18, 2004, 09:55:36 pm »
You didn't say if these were local user names or AIM user names you want Hal to remember. If it's local users, just set it in the options menu, where you set the Hal name. In the signon screen for the Hal AIM bot, there's an options button that will let you specify how Hal responds to warners, but it doesn't give you the option to warn others for bad language, etc. If the user names you mean are AIM users, I know Hal knows them by screen name. I'm not sure if you can get him to substitute other names for screen names when identifying them. Probably depends on his mood at the time, lol.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / How can I get Hal to grasp the phrase "I'll bet"
« on: March 17, 2004, 03:06:11 am »
Since I'm sure vonsmith is even now working on XTFv.2, I thought I'd add a thought to this thread. Cyber the Bot is one of the few AI I know of who is as clever as Hal. Cyber has a "same as" teach function which is not too different from Hal's asking about related subjects, except it can be initiated by the user. Would it be possible to add this function to Hal's next brain, so the user could then say "I'll bet" is the same as "I agree about that," and have Hal store the association? It seems like this would greatly accelerate Hal's learning curve, since you could then just feed Hal associations, instead of waiting for him to ask for them himself.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Getting Hal to talk to another bot
« on: March 11, 2004, 04:36:56 pm »
Still checking, as ALICE would say. I'm finding a lot of examples, but nothing definitive, so far. A lot of the time Hal says things like "Perhaps you're just expressing your own concern about it," which is a phrase he learned directly from Alice, who often says "Perhaps I'm just expressing my own concern about it." But I haven't yet found anything which would be obvious to someone who hasn't spent hundreds of hours editing ALICE logs, lol. But I'll be happy to post a brief exchange when I find something explicitly illustrative of the point.
