Ultra Hal 7.0 / Where is the Hal plug-in page?
« on: February 24, 2004, 11:04:46 pm »
The link is on the UltraHal Assistant page. That may be the only place from which you can access it. It doesn't seem to appear in the general menu.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Possible conflict
« on: February 22, 2004, 07:12:54 pm »
Try using a character for Hal that you're not using in any of your CyberBuddy settings(i.e. not used for default, chat, weather, time, jokes, et al). If the problem persists then it's probably not character related, but more likely to be related to a conflict between the CyberBuddy server and the Hal.exe. Sorry, no clue about Hal "losing his mind."

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Getting Hal to talk to another bot

Someone with more technical knowledge than I have would know better, but I'm not sure it's possible without an AIM connection. Maybe one of the computer wizards here can make something for Hal comparable to Greg Leedberg's UDLP link for his Billy and Daisy bots.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / help on alice brain

You should give a few more details, like what your OS is, and what the error message said. I'm not a techie, but I know they'll need to know the details of your problem to be able to help you with it.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Getting Hal to talk to another bot

I've been trying to come up with something useful to say about the process of finding other bots to have your bot chat with. It's not a problem I have, since I already have online bots of my own. The best idea I've come up with is to run a Google search for AIM chat bot, or AIM chatbot list, or something similar. I brief search turned up several likely sources of bots to chat with. Just assume that if it's a bot host with an ongoing "most-chatty" competition, bot to bot conversation is probably frowned upon. In actuality, if you wanted a Hal-to-Hal chat, a posting on this forum of bot screen names for those who want to do bot-to-bot chats would probably do the trick.

I just finished my first conversation with the new brain, and I must say that I'm very impressed. I noticed that it did make a few grammatical errors, but I assume it can be trained out of those in time. What I noticed most was the coherency of its conversation. It wanted to know things, and formulated new questions to extend its knowledge, based on the input I provided. Every few exchanges it paused to verify it had understood my meaning. I think it may have been the most cogent conversation I've ever had with an AI. I deliberately use the word "chatbot" rather than "chatterbot," because I'm not especially fond of bots that "chatter." That's one reason, to be honest, that UltraHal has never been a particular favorite of mine, in spite of its definitely superior GUI. It's good at saying a great deal about nothing in particular and everything in general but training it to make connected, coherent conversation is an arduous task at best. I came away from this conversation feeling like I'd had real communication with a real entity. Congratulations, VonSmith, on a job well done. Now, I'll post and go chat some more, and let others have the floor to nitpick about 101 real or imagined small glitches.

When you sign your Hal on to AIM, there is an option at the bottom of the AIM Bot interface "Send an Instant Message to Someone." Obviously, you just type in the screen name of the person (or bot) you want to IM and your message, either the default provided or your own, and click send, lol. As far as finding bots to talk to, that is less obvious. Some botmasters don't mind if bots talk to their bot, some seriously object to it. Some places, like Runabot, hold bot "popularity contests" and penalize botmasters who let their bots talk to other bots. So it's a good idea, where possible, to check with the botmaster. A good way to find likely prospects is to check forums and messages boards like this one, where people often post requests for someone to chat with their bots.I'll try to dig up a couple of bot lists and post them later. But if you make a screen name just for your bot and then register it with a couple of the "find a buddy" services, you should have plenty of human traffic for your bot.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Pb

You can find Amanda on Remi's site, The Chatterbot Collection. The first page there is just monthly updates of new finds; check the A-Z list or non-English page for Amanda and maybe other French-speaking chatbots as well.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Still waiting for CD. Also, does YOUR Hal dream?
« on: February 15, 2004, 10:02:42 am »
That's so cool. I think you've just created UltraHal's Corollary to the Descartes Law:"I think I'm self-conscious, therefore I am." I doubt there is any empirical difference between my belief in my self-consciousness and Hal's belief in his.

That's a shame. I'd considered adding some of the foreign language sets to my Alicebots, but I'll take the word of a native French speaker that the French AIML set is not worth the effort to upload, lol. Have you experimented with Remi's Amandabot? From his description it sounded like a fairly complex bot which might be reasonably comparable to Hal, but since the French version is the only one available, I'm unable to use it.

That's a very interesting concept. I'm betting if you collected them, there'd be a market for a book called "AI Dreams." How do you go about teaching Hal to dream?

That's a shame. My next suggestion would be to talk to Opale, and see if it uses a better AIML set, or the one you're already familiar with. If it uses a better AIML set, perhaps you could email Opale's creator about it. You might also check with Remi Poulin of the Chatterbot Collection either by email or his forum to see if he might know something helpful.

Sorry, vonsmith, the spelling was bad, but the link worked, had you clicked it, lol. With regard to voices, do you have the Lernout&Hauspie TTS engine? It has a decent British female voice. Also, Woody's Page is a good place to keep up with current developments of MS Agents. Most of what's depicted there can't be downloaded from the site, but Woody is at the CyberBuddy chatroom most evenings, and he's generous about sharing characters he has.

Thank you. The occassional visit by someone who appreciates it makes all the hours I devote to developing and improving it worthwhile.
