Title: Hal and robotics
Post by: Sigma X on December 09, 2009, 04:36:19 pm
Hello I'm new here but after having a little chat with hal and getting the 31 day free trial I just may get this software
but before that I have to ask has anyone attempthed to use this software with robotics if not then I will try a go at it
this will be a great start for combining to making advanced robots
I also want to state I had no idea that this topic has been brought up or if this is the right forum to post this message after all i'm new

Will....and on to you....

Years ago I bought a very basic robotic platform. Its software run on a laptop and that sits on the robotic frame. It has very limited voice recognition and excellant vision recognition. You speak a word or two and then program the robot to respond with specific actions.
Until I discovered Hal I had no real interestin that machine but then it hit me both brains could be run at the same time and it turns out to be a very easy thing to do.
The company that made the basic platform that I purchased was called Evolution Robotics, but unfortunately they no longer sell robots.
however the owner og this sit is investigating another robotic platform to see if Hal can be intergrated into it at the same time.
Search this site a little deeper and you will find all kinds of info.

Short answer is yes.

With additional scripts and maybe some interface programs you should be able to get Hal to do almost anything. I've seen people basically roboticize their whole house with Hal. Firing off a few solenoids should be easy.

@bill 819 that robot is the ER1 I heard of it and wanted one so I can fully customize it

my skills are shakey at best meaning I can design the robot but programming is a different story...for now
my idea is to use hal on a motherboard and then use a servo control board to control servos it's a good start I just need to gather more info

@ will that's Mr Data huh he's awsome what type of pc is being used also what type of servos are being used will you give him a body too

X,
I am under surveillance by "@s

J.

I believe Will is using parts from Robotrix
It's kind of like a pet dog, he is waiting for
the day that he connects the USB REVA&B and can
transfer data towards leg and foot control
He is always open for suggestions on success
That or a million dollars, hmm

Will would a Million dollars fix the damage to
His face, and give full functionality back?
I would probably shake down the host co.
for kickbacks/discounts especially if the see what
had been done already.Poor Mr. Data heh Poor Will
you can see it in his eyes in the video , Frustration.
and even a little anger, because he has worked so hard
and has something special at a mere arms reach.

All that you need is built into ER1. That is what I have been trying to get accross to you. The programming language is ER1 is extremely basic and easy to use.

Hi from Wil and Mr Data
Mr One has hit the nail on the head, pritty much,
"ha good summing"
i reckon i've not made a million bucks cause of a lack of ability to communicate what i want. maybe,,feel free to give me that million bucks .
,,"squints eyes" hum,
  ,,
nice success sounds like a goal, success sounds nice.
my goal and still currently Mr Datas goal is to be a success.
to try to understand something is interesting:

Mr Data in jan 2005 started as Ultrahal "Thanks Zabaware" and a bioloid kit from tribotix,

  i'm a supporter of    www.Tribotix.com  " good on them, Thank you   :)  "

it can be nice to add a nice expert.

and with a few  late nights "years of late nights"      vwala!  .a lifes work, its sort of an ongoing project "ooow, wince! that was hard to say, such harsh language"  and yeah VWala.

a nice goal sounds good, success sounds nice, if its nice then i like the sound of it, this nice progression sounds nicer, i wish you nice success, nicer than, some nice sounds good, nice can be like a direction, generally nice, inevitably some nice!

Bye for now and be well from Wil and Mr Data   :)  :]

sorry i've been away for a bit tring the 31 trial edition
hal or in my case "bit" is quite a fast learner
plus I can change what he says in hin his databanks quite simple I might add quite a joy to talk with I'll surely get hal now
now I may try a new robot system i've been working on to boot
I just gotta work with hal vision

but for now i'm going to start my net-navi project
it'll take less time and parts

Does Hal work with that program? If so, you need to just follow the instructions. In the end, though, you should have a goal in mind.

I've been checking out hal's brain editor software
it's pretty solid in terms of intergrating it with a robot
but what suprizes most is the programs that can be intergrated with it hal can be written to do many things [}:)] that is if the person is able to write the programs currently I'm tring to see can hal work with c++ or python as for my navi project I plan on intergrating a anti-virus scanner to it so I can verbally command it to csann and delete viruses I suppose i'm rambling but working with the trial edition pretty much sold me on hal

here's somthing i've been pondering
parallax has delevoped a microcontroller called the propeller
(I know it's been out for a while)bit this microcontroller has 8 processors but more so what interest me is the parallax viewport
this software has a language called spin that seems easy to use and it hands everything for robotics use even vision anyrate I figured could this run with han some how  for example viewport can interface to servos and sensors and send the data back to hal and hal can act on his surroundings or somthing like this someone please explain could this work or not work

btw sorry i've had so much to do

On my robot I do not intergrate Hals software with the robot control software, I run both brains at the same time. The one thing I did years ago was to give Hal the command when he heard a certain word to ignore what ever was being said next. The robots brain was programmed only to respond and obey commands when the word robot was given first, it would then follow the commands given to it.
This was not the best way to do itbut it was the only way that I could make it work.

On another concept I thought that Robert stated a few years ago about intergrating Hal with a company called "White Horse Robotics."
They made a small robot that could be programmed to perform many different tasks. I might not have the name of the company correct but the little robot more closely resembled R2D2 than looking anything like a human robot.

Using hal in seperate to control a robot that seems a bit easier
but what about vision in theat sense can hal auto run a program
you know having hal on a jump drive and once installed he can run a program automatically

I know I should'nt ask but I gotta
ask during some research I took a moment to ask what language is hal in of cource this put all projects on a screeching halt I think it's visual basic and can run visual basic script
but I heard hal was written in java but it can run c++ programs
now i'm confused please help ANYONE my research and projects depend on it

Thanks freddy

I was checking out roborealm to see if hal can be interfaced if so how would one go about it this discussion is open to anyone who know about programming in VBS

I also have the ER1 and it is a lot of fun to mess around with.  I have just rebuilt it and am going to try an add a basic stamp to it for some other uses.  I have not been able to get Ultrahal to make it operate or do things yet, but there is always hope:)
Have a great week!
