I have showed him, I have told him, and he still won't count! What do you do, to get Hal to count? I have tried everything I can think of!

You can't get it to actually count, because it's just a phrase comparing machine, but you can get it to say a phrase that has the numbers counted in it.
Simply say the list of numbers to it at various times. You can't do it twice in a row or it will bump out to the "are you repeating yourself" set of phrases.
Maybe say something like "You will count, one, two, three", then later, after you've done it several times, when you use a sentence with the word "count" in it, Hal will replace the word "you" with "I" and say, "I will count, one, two, three"

I just remembered that someone, maybe "ramccoid" made a plugin that would either count or do the alphabet, I forget which. It may be still posted here.

Is this the one you are thinking of ?...

Yes! That's exactly it, thanks!
I am always amazed at what plugins can do for Hal. By itself it is a fascinating but limited Robot, with plugins, it has the opportunity to become much more.
Anyone who uses Hal and who has any interest in learning to script plugins for it, has all my support.

Yes, there are quite a few of them now too.
I try to keep this list up-to-date, but there hasn't been a lot lately.
Maybe you will find it useful :
