I tried that briefly, I meant to go back to it, I'm wondering if you are logged into a room with no people in it.  I reckon you should try using the messenger service normally, just to see if there are any installation problems to start with.

Thanks Freddy, I'm not sure but I think that you're telling me to send hal into a chat room. Is that correct?[8]

I was meaning, for you to just use the chat as a normal user, ie you yourself to see if thats working.  I'm going to have a go too, I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi again, it doesnt look like Hal can go into a chat room, but can send messages to a username, i signed in with one user name and signed Hal in with another and was able to chat to Hal over AOL.

So you need someones, or another bots username, which you tap into the blank box, then send a message and it will start the chat session off...

Let me know when you are online and I'll help test it out if you like.

First I'll say that I don't use Hal for AOL chat, but I think I remember something about AOL/AIM no longer working with Hal or Alice.  I think it's something with AOL - they changes something with their programming.

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

Lucius,
I've gone ahead and tested HalAIMBot and I've found the same problem, but I've also discovered the answer, it has to do with AOL, the HalAIMBot that installs with Hal 5 doesn't work, I had to download and install the latest Hal 6 CR5 and use the HalAIMBot included with it. Hope this helps.

Thats just great Arakus. Seems to me that Hal5 should be fixed. After all it is a purchased Item.

Hal 5 uses the AOL TOC 1.0 protocol, which AOL disabled several months ago. Hal 6 uses AOL's newer TOC 2.0 protocol and will work until AOL decides to make major changes again

Also in this topic, I discovered that the Alice brain plugin works with AIM Hal.  I never got it working on normal Hal but it works ok on AIM.  You can get ALICE chatting to Hal, or Hal to himself even.[8D]

No official fix, but I posted an updated AIMBOT a while ago on this forum. You can get it at http://www.zabaware.com/forum/uploaded/Medeksza/2005822154328_HalAimBot2.zip  Just unzip to your Hal Assistant folder and create shortcuts to it. Do not overwrite the old one as Windows installer may try to "heal" it back to the way it was.

Nice work on the AIM s/w by the way Rob, I guessed you must have been glued to a monitor for a while now fixing bugs, so thought I would send some good news your way:

I had never use HAL AIMbot successfully until trying again this week, and found it's a whole new area to explore.  I found Hal had a better and surprisingly realistic chat with Arakus's Hal, than it did talking to an ALICE bot.  Alice tended to repeat herself too often, forcing Hal into the same topic area.  In all between the two Hal definately came out on top, because he/she has a much wider range of responses.

So well done!

Also, it got me wondering...has Hal ever entered the Loebner competition?
