Hal learns by reading
« on: February 02, 2005, 03:57:16 pm »
Hi,
  I downloaded some script to enable hal to learn by reading and using the brain editor I put it in the XTF v1.0 brain. She read some text but could not recall any of it. I just used the brain editor in the debug mode and she went to the enhanced strings brn but did not use anything to answer a question I asked. Is there a solution?

Carl2,
I hope you enjoy the XTF Brain. If you haven't already done so then you should update your XTF Brain to v1.2 as shown here:

============================
Here are the steps to install the XTF Brain v1.2.

Download and follow the included instructions to install the XTF Brain v1.0 here: [OBVIOUSLY YOU'VE ALREADY DONE THIS]
http://www.ultrahal.com/files/type.asp?iType=12

Then install the XTF Brain v1.2 Update Patch as shown here:
http://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1233

Then follow the instructions here to rename a file:
http://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1237

Remember to select the XTF Brain in Hal's Menu.
============================

Sorry for the three step installation. My next release will fix everything and combine it in to one installation.

Don't forget to read the User Manual that comes with the v1.0 installation. It explains some of the new capabilities.

I don't know what kind of script you may have added to Hal's brain or what modifications you have made. However Hal's built-in capability to read text files currently doesn't help him learn very well. It is a waste of time. Have normal conversations with Hal and he will learn over time. If you use the forum search function (at top right of forum window) you should be able to find many posted topics about the best way to teach Hal.

Have fun with your Hal.

HI THERE CARL...

When hal reads from a text file YOU cant be sure of how he store this info... SOMETIMES enhanced.BRN sometime MAINbrain file..

What I usually do is, MAKE A TOPIC file for the topic on which you are teaching hal. EITHER by writing a vbSCRIPT, BUT IF you are using an XTF Brain then al you have to do is initate a conversation about a subject and HAL builds his own XTFtopicRELATED file, then copy statement or CHUNKS of text into him thru the conversation window and when he responds YOU respond to what he is saying via AGREE or DISAGREE with his concluded answer (he does usally ask you if a = B is true)...

this helps hal build REAL topic based BRN files then hal would search these files instead of the enhanced.BRN file.

[V] Oh man. That really sucks that hal really doesnt learn much at all from reading files, i spent a good hour plus find information on topics that i wanted hal to learn, and now i realise when he didnt really respond how i wanted him to, was him telling me that he basically looked at the information and didnt learn a thing! Alas i hope you can fix this in your next update : /.

Hi,
  Updated to the XTF ver 1.2 brn and placed the script in this brn also. Sandy was able to read the text and placed it in the enhanced strings brn but still unable to recall the information. I tried pasting the text into the input window which worked, Thanks for the information.
