Ultra Hal 7.0 / Will Hal eventually answer?
« on: April 23, 2005, 07:48:17 pm »
I seem to remember someone writing a script to command a Haptek character to change skins, a couple of months back. I don't feel like hunting it, at present, but if you guys are interested, I think you can use the forum search engine and find it.

The Ginsu knives did pretty well, too.

Haptek is still alive. If you look around here, you'll see that there's an upcoming Haptek easter egg of some sort which Robert intends for inclusion in the next version (or possibly the update) of Hal, and people here have been in touch with them about dev tools and licensing. A recent manifestation of their current activities seems to be Robot-Hosting. The problem with them seems to be that unlike MS Agents, which you can create entirely using freeware, their tools mostly average a couple thou' apiece, pricing them right out of range of 90% of their prospective customer base. Custom-made agents from them run in that same price range. Even the People Putty program is a $50 download. Apparently they prefer to make a lot of money from a few customers and remain relatively obscure, rather than make a little money from a lot of people and become a new industry standard.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Deskmate, Hal 5 and Cyberbuddy
« on: April 17, 2005, 05:43:34 pm »
In Docking Station and the Creatures games--probably the best a-life simulation ever created--the creatures respond in two ways to being touched. There's a "friendly hand" which strokes the creature, and elicits laughter and cries of pleasure, and an "unfriendly hand" which gives them a hard smack on the behind, with resultant ouches and grumbling. If someone were going to make Hal characters touch sensitive, it would be great to carry over the same "stroke or slap" options to Hal.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / About to give up
« on: April 13, 2005, 01:18:23 am »
Hollywood, have you tried renaming your Hal or Zaba characters from .htr to .bak, and renaming your Haptek full body figure to Hal or Zaba, whichever you renamed? That should allow you to load the character. If you have the full version of Hal the Haptek character should just appear in your list of characters, but renaming it to Hal or Zaba definetly works. Loading the skins is mostly just a matter of getting the path right when you're modifying your happy.hap and happyn.hap files. That can be frustrating, but you can go to your skins and just copy and paste from the address bar.

General Discussion / Controlling Ultra Hal TTS?

There's a Voice tab in Hal's Options interface. It should list all the voices available on your computer(s), and allow you to select your preference.

General Discussion / Hal and MS Agent

Dr. Benway, you may like this agent. It's a very demure young lady. When you mentioned Alice in Wonderland it came immediately to mind. Athena (right-click, choose "Save Target As")

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Agent View
« on: March 24, 2005, 12:10:33 am »
Agent View is a program for viewing MS Agent .acs files and animations. Adds "View" option to right-click menu. Right-click on an .acs file and choose "View" to see the agent and its animations, and hear the default voice. Does not work with Haptek characters, but a very handy utility for anyone using MS Agents.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Which brain to use?
« on: March 22, 2005, 10:26:36 pm »
I think the default and uncensored brains use the same files. Jerry says the Ziggy brain is almost entirely rewritten, and wouldn't have much interaction with the default brain. The XTF uses Hal's files, but also writes its own XTF-specific files which the default brain doesn't use. It's probably best to experiment with all of them until you have a preference, then use that one more or less to the exclusion of the others.
