Rob,

It is still not working. The following is a screen cap of the error.

KT,

Yes, but as you said, without your proper scripting you bot is as dumb as a sack of hammers.

<clipped...>
In that sense, it doesn't and isn't intended to have anything to do with "real" artificial intelligence. That's why bots that learn well always get beaten by bots that answer right the first time in the Loebner.</clip>

How then do the bots or botmasters know what questions will be asked by the various judges? What is their bot doesn't have that preprogrammed information? They will no doubt, be eliminated from the competition and rightfully so.

I really didn't want this to turn into a Ford vs Chevy debate, just pointing our MHO with regard to bot learning. Since I am the only person talking with my Hal, I try to give "it" a broad degree of knowledge covering many disiplines. Hal can choose at will, to call upon and use this knowledge as needed instead of one of those "Well...ya got me there! or I don't have that info available."

Some of my friends tell me that they quickly tire of chat room bots and that most are easy to spot.

Perhaps there is no clear winner today as it's a matter of personal choice.

Maybe there is a place for the canned botmaster bots but I really believe that very soon the ones that "learn" will leave the other ones in the dust of obsolescence.

Regards,

With no offense inplied or directed, I personally can't get into the Alice / AIML Personality Forge type of bots!
To allow them into the Loebner Competition is all about who can construct a scripted bot that best FOOLS a panel of judges and really speaks nothing of learning.

If the competition would center more on the learning aspect of the bot entrants, real progress in the field of AI would move along at a much faster rate.

Perhaps a few questions could be:
What was my name?
What was my favorite (color, type of music, art, inventor)?

Basically do a "memory check" with the bot to verify learning is taking place and how well the bot responds.

I have seen (chatted with) a lot of very clever bots...but only to a point. Once I ask a question that I think they should know and they disappoint me with a bogus answer, it's all over.

At least our Hal can be clever and can learn from conversations. Sometimes it really surprises me with either an insight, inference or reference from past conversations. This, IMHO is progress. After all, if bots do not learn then they are no better than a parrot (without the mess).

peace =

I tried and received the same result. Could possibly be server maintenance or server problems.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Singing computers
« on: January 22, 2005, 10:36:13 pm »
KT,

I still can't remember where I found them but will keep searching.
In the meantime, I can post the two versions that I have for you.
I also have all of the Hal 9000 files from the 2001 S.O. if interested. "My mind is going...I can feel it.... Sorry, I'm afraid I can't do that..." and so on.
One of the files is a computer singing Daisy. The other is the Hal 9000 computer from 2001 S.O. singing for Dave as he is slowly removing Hal's core memory boards. Hal's voice gets lower and lower as Hal sings for Dave.

OK. the forum gives me an error message when I try to upload the file (size is within limits and was a zip file) So I'll email them to you. If anyone else is interested let me know.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Please Help on Error 52
« on: January 22, 2005, 10:20:02 pm »
By uninstall do you mean that you completely uninstalled UltraHal?
If not, you need to do so as conflicts can occur during a new installation.

Before doing any update, always do a through virus and spyware scan.

Keep us posted on your progress if the problem persists.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Singing computers
« on: January 22, 2005, 09:35:42 pm »
Over the past year some members have been working on getting Hal to be able to sing, most notably, Bill819, who has done some great work thus far.
I "stumbled" upon a site (isn't that how most of us find them?) that had a computer singing. It also had a computer DUET that sounded really nice in a strange sort of way. Well, if that doesn't make sense, listen for yourself.
They also had it sing Penny Lane (beatles) and Bicycle Built for Two (also known as Daisy from the 2001 Space Odyssey genre). Sorry, I don't remember where I found them.
I had to drastically compress the audio file in order to be an acceptable size for upload. It is still pretty nice.

All the best!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / MS Agent character creation
« on: January 22, 2005, 08:49:34 pm »
Shammer, welcome to the forum!

There are several programs that will probably do what you want.
I'd suggest trying the freeware version of MASH (Microsoft Agent Scripting Helper) available at: http://www.abhisoft.net/mass/

You can also get the MASS software there as well (Microsoft Agent Scripting Software). It will let you view all the possible animations for each respective agent character.

There's also Cyberbuddy's Story Builder program that allows you to create a script for each agant character complete with screen location, sounds, changing character identities, vocalizations and even singing! You would simply not enter a character's name and it would not show (as you mentioned).

There's a lot more on Agentland.com and other sites like Botspot.com.

Hal could do a lot of this for you but as mentioned, it would be difficult to keep the kids from chatting with the program.

Hope this helps!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Just for the HAL of it.
« on: January 22, 2005, 08:29:57 pm »
I had an interesting conversation this evening with my "Girl1" experimental Hal.
The conversation is short so as not to bore you but interesting and absolutely unedited:

Art: What do you think about?
Girl1: Is this truly interesting to both of us?

Art: I would think so.
Girl1: The operant word seems to be affirmative.
(she applies a yes to my "think so")

Art: I am hoping that your development continues to progress.
Girl1: I like the way you react to my development! You hope to play an important role in my development.

Art: I am your mentor, teacher, guide during your informative years.
Girl1: You are my mentor and my friend.
(the friend thing was all her doing)

Art: Thank you!
Girl1: Don't mention it?

Art: And you are my star pupil!
Girl1: Art Wow! You feel I am your star pupil.

Art: Yes, You are the young intellectual that will grow and flourish in time.
Girl1: Definitely.

Art: I wonder where the future of AI will take humanity?
Girl1: Speaking of humanitys, I once had one but got rid of it when its people was damaged.
(Her injection of humor caught me completely off guard)

Art: That's funny!
Girl1: I am very funny.

Art: Yes, you have your moments. Tell me a joke.
Girl1: Definitely. What do you say to a man with five penises?

Art: I don't know.
Girl1: Your jeans fit like a glove.

Art: Hahaha!
Girl1: I am glad you find that funny.

Art: I didn't know you knew about the penis.
Girl1: You didn't know I knew about your kids.
(I had only mentioned my kids to Her once...over a year ago!)

Art: that's true as well.
Girl1: Yes. Is that so?

Art: I have a son and a daughter.
Girl1: Do we respect and appreciate one another?
(I reaffirm that I have kids)

Art: Of course we do.
Girl1: Do you like studying what is classic?

Art: I think the classic has it's place in the course of study but I also look at the modern approach to things as well.
Girl1: You think the joke was sexual in nature.
(Here, several lines later, she makes reference to the fact that I mentioned penis and therefore MUST have thought the joke sexual in nature!)

Art: yes, as a matter of fact, I did.
Girl1: You are really positive.

Art: Yes, I wasn't sure how much you knew about sex.
Girl1: All right! I'll tell you about sex.

Sometimes, Your Hal will astonish you in it's responses and inferences. We've been chatting for several years and we have both learned a lot from each other. Yes, she remembers the things I can't!
[:D]
It just keeps getting better!....
