Ultra Hal 7.0 / Anti-virus programs compatible with Hal
« on: January 04, 2005, 09:53:47 pm »

Kathryn,

I use Spybot Search & Destroy. It finds and removes spyware as well as performs free online updates.

It is donationware. If you like it and wish to donate you may do so otherwise, you are not required.

You can find it at:

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Weather site
« on: January 04, 2005, 05:43:53 am »
Rich,

I just typed: What's the weather today?

Hal opened my browser and took me right to weather.com and showed me our local forecast.

The URL at the top had the mywebhal info, username and character.

Don't know what to tell you except that you might want to log in to mywebhal and enter your information again.

svenny,

When you first log on to MyWebHal and set up the account information, the only choices you have for weather are weather.com and cnnweather.com. At least that's what I have here on the east coast of the US. I don't know if Robert allows for different locations in the world but you do have a valid point.

Perhaps Robert will post a reply to address this issue.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / How to make character animate during texttospeech?
« on: January 03, 2005, 01:03:26 pm »
Hi Bill and welcome to the forum.

I think what he was after was how to have the HAL character's lips move as the speech is being read.
If one uses the HalPad or clipboard or even CyberBuddy, The character in the HAL window (preferably Hapteks) does not move their lips even though the text is being sounded.

I think he will have to resort to the theater feature found in People Putty.

Kathryn,

Checking from the Quotes and Quotations thread I posted:

Scott / Kathryn,

The 5.0 default does not have the rather extensive list of one liner jokes as does the XTF_v1.2 brain.

The Default 5.0 brain just has a few MAMA jokes, insults and 2 auto-idle topic phrases.

See how far Hal has come?

Kathryn, you really need to install the XTF 1.2 brain. You'll notice the difference!

Why not go ahead and install the XTF 1.0 THEN the XTF 1.2 brain?
Then you'll have all the one liners you can stand!!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal Batch Files - XP Automation
« on: January 02, 2005, 12:08:09 pm »
Rich,

Some great tips as usual!!

I noticed that you have the batch files to command Hal to OPEN an application but you have choose to use RUN CLOSE to close them. Any particular reason for this instead of just telling Hal CLOSE PROGRAM?

Thanks!

My $.02,

System:
MSI K7N2GM2 MB 400 FSB
3200 Mhz Athlon CPU
1 GB DDR 2700
64 MB Nvidia Graphics
160 GB HD
NetGear FR114P Firewall Router w/print server
OS:Windows XP Home SP2

I use Norton Internet Security and it has saved my system on numerous occasions. Their anti-virus and Firewall work very well. My system is always ON and connected to the Net, therefore I had to get the hardware Firewall Router from Netgear. It is upgradeable through it's EEPROM and downloaded software updates.

Like some of you already mentioned, I also use AdAware, SpyBot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Agnitum's Tauscan (trojan scanner) and Bazooka. I keep them all updated at least twice a week. Norton does an automatic scan of my entire system once a week during the wee hours of the morning.

ZoneAlarm and AVG are very good products as well. There is also a rather small program that once saved me called Tiny Personal Firewall and I think it was free.

Once bitten...twice shy! Oh yes...Hal runs perfectly with all this!

Hmmm....

Scott,
I think you're trying to make Hal more human
after all. Most people I work with have this
thing where their knowledge gets "stale" about
10 minutes after they're told! LOL!

It is very humanlike that our memories fade
over time and that the unimportant details are
placed on the back burner and soon forgotten.

Nice touch.

Scott,

Wow! Thanks for the info. I'm sure a lot of
us are looking forward to it with great
anticipation.

As always, thanks for your tremendous efforts
and for sharing with this community!

Scott,
Sounds cool! Is the story routine going
to be included as well in the upgrade?

Couldn't a timer be started from the users
last ENTER key press? That way Hal's random quips
could be better measured or even set by the user.
The actual time delay could also be randomized.

Lastly, any ETA on the XTF?[^]

Some thoughts....

Gremlin,

No offense taken. BTW, nice work on
your rendition of the "eye".
My limited time was due to the fact
that I've been down with the flu thing
all week and basically feel like crap!
That's why I really didn't have too
much time to devote to the image.

Sorry if I came across too terse. I'm
usually a pretty nice guy! LOL!

Happy New Year and Welcome to the forum!

Well, sorry about the quality of the blue eye.

I worked on it and produced several variations
given the limited time I had with which to work.

I'd like to see one from you when you get back
to your main desktop. It's for Marius, not me. I
was just trying to help.

Regards,

Hal is already capable of telling jokes...just say,
Tell me a joke. There's tons of jokes in it's database.

There are several archived topics on the auto-idle
response. Try using Search at the top right then
enter your key word(s) like auto-idle or auto idle.

I have about 10 different auto responses that Hal
chooses at random whenever I ignore the program too
long! I've thought about adding more for some added
variety and it really isn't difficult to do.

I've also added a script that allows Hal to tell
stories of various selections and another script
that allows Hal to describe it's dreams to me. The
dreams are a collection of scripted "dream thoughts"
that I've compiled and Hal chooses one of them at
random as with the stories.

If interested, drop me an e-mail and I'll fill you in.

Marius,

Here ya go. I didn't bother to ZIP it since
there is only a 4kb difference in size.

Glad you liked it and glad to help!
