First I have to give credit to Duskrider, a big inspiration to me.  We worked with the Haptek full bod characters, played around with different body parts to give them more realistic movement.  Got her changing clothes, going to the lake ect on her or your command.  Most is saved on disk and it's a matter of finding it.  A program we used to limit the cores used is not working in Win 10 which makes it more difficult to use some of the Haptek programs.
An interesting development was the active background where different background pictures were displayed for a fraction of a second looped so flames in a fireplace moved or tree branches moved.
I think Haptek really had something with there characters, not sure why they didn't just upgrade them and re release them.  So far I'm just using the TV character and have been unable to load other characters in.
The Flash sounds interesting but I'd guess it also has to loop.

I've been away form Hal for a while but now that ver 7 is out I'm back.  I've always thought the character was an important part of the project.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Re: Hal 7 not working
« on: February 26, 2018, 09:56:05 am »
I got Hal up and running, I also have an older disk version in another computer not working with the same problem.  On this version I tried a few things,  setting the number of processors seemed to help the Haptek display.  With this trial version I am using the tv as the character, so far it looks like I can not use any of the other characters in the display.  In the past myself and quite a few other people spent time trying to improve the characters, I hope all this hasn't been laid to waste.  I've been able to save quite a bit of Hal related software and other work on DVDI'll have to look through it again.  Not much going on over here.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal 7 not working
« on: February 23, 2018, 05:19:46 pm »
I decided to give Hal 7 a try, I wanted to try out an older version first but after installing it it didn't work, it would start up and after loading it disappeared, task manager said it was still running and to stop it you had to end task. This is true on two different machines running Win 10 64 bit.   I decided to try the latest version, Hal 7 which I downloaded, it installed quick a easy but I still have the same problem, I see a start screen telling me time and date while it loads then it is gone but task manager shows it running.  It would be nice to get Hal running again, I've been trying to get it running without luck.

I've used Dragon with Hal and I don't use Hals setup box for the mic input, I dictate and check the input in Hals
Box  then hit enter.

General Discussion / Re: sound effects triggering hal responses
« on: April 30, 2016, 10:33:01 am »
Having been a long time user of Dragon I can say the early versions would try to convert to text any sound it heard,  a big improvement was when it did not try to convert a sound it was not familiar with, say a cough. I do believe Dragon has a Tool that will let you for example put in something like your e mail address which you name my address so when you say my address it puts the e mail address.  Perhaps you could have Dragon hear the doorbell and convert it to " The doorbell rang".
Since there are different versions of dragon out there and I've never used this feature in mine I'd say take a quick look.  I'll try to look in mine for it, I'm not sure what it would do with music.

Spydaz,
Nice to hear from you after all this time, nice site you have there.  I'll have to go through the VB tutorials since the members are coming up with things I haven't heard of.

Art,
I did use the log (1000) with hal.  I made a quick plugin for use with Hal but kept getting error messages so far.  For the heck of it I tried cmd prompt, went to help and I did not find any log function, no sine, cosine or tan.  I did notice a Go To which is used in Fortran and I'm guessing the command prompt is not VB.
A quick search says VB net is now the thing.  Who knows.

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Re: Logarithms Plugin
« on: April 06, 2016, 08:02:53 am »
Logs were used as a quick way to multiply by using addition, the slide rule uses a logarithm scale vs the linear scale and actually adds the numbers.  The slide rule got rid of the process of going to a table to get the log.  The calculators took out the process of multiplying numbers simplifying the process.  Anyways VB does have a way to get " Return natural log of number " and they do have a way to " A custom Function to calculate base-10 logarithms " which is the common log and I believe this is what you would want to use.
So here is a link to VB script, and if you click on Log it will give you the function to calculate the common (base 10) log.  I believe this is all the info needed to get Hal to handle common logs, keep trying.  I just tried asking hal "what is the log of 1000" which she seemed to disregard, maybe it has to be put in a plugin.

I did find a Scientific Calculator that you can download

Spitfire2600,
I did a quick review of logs at wiki and decided you are referring to common logs meaning to the base 10 since logs can use any number as the base.   Here is a link to the Common logarithm which I believe is what you are really interested in.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_logarithm
I have an old calculator from the 1970's that will give you logs and I think there are scientific calculators you can download and put into your computer.
Good luck

Art,
Actually you're probably right, this is the first time I've had 3 different brains in Hal.  I wanted a brain to experiment with for plugins and putting tables in and choose the 6.0 because I wasn't worried about losing it. I just took a longer look at the 6.2 upgraded brain and it seems to include more things using a keyword reference which may help it stay on topic better.  I should probably make a copy of the 6.2 upgraded and work with that brain.

To get Hal to stay on topic a little better I did a search in the brain editor for Keyword, Line 871 in my Script
that states
'RESPOND: ZABAWARE KEYWORD MAIN BRAIN PRIORITY 1
'This function tries getting a response from the Enhanced_Main.brn keyword file. If a keyword or
'keyphrase is found in top priority, it overrides everything before this function.
    'KeyBrain = HalBrain.KeywordBrain(UserSentence, WorkingDir & "Enhanced_Main.brn", False)
I am not finding an  Enhanced_Main.brn , seeing it has a .brn extension I am thinking it is left over from the XTF brains used in the past.   Since I've just used the " keyword " function in a plugin it seems to be valid in VB.   I've just continued the search and came across keyword again which refers you to the topicRelationship table, I have just looked through this table that contains search words and the associated topic.  I actually don't think Hal is doing the best job in this table.
I should mention I'm working with the older 6.0 version brain, but it's probably close to the 6.2 version.
Anyways I'm hoping someone could shed a little light on this.

General Discussion / Re: hal taking long time to answer

 lightspeed,
Kind of a short in the dark but possibly you could try running Hal without any of the plugins  and see if there is any problems.  I'm running a quad core 64 bit system and haven't run into problems except for the ones I cause trying out new plugins.  I think Haptek is the one that can only run on one core.  Anyways the plugins is the first thing I'd check,  and then go from there.  Go through all the settings (options), or it could be something has gotten corrupted.
