Title: Background Images.
Post by: Maviarab on December 21, 2004, 07:13:43 pm
Hi all,

Not sure if anyone is really interested in this but I have over 50 images that would be perfect for using as backgrounds to your Hal/Haptek characters.

There is a good mix of different images and I just thought even though you can go and find any old picture off the net, some people might like to save themselves the time and hassle involved in looking for good pics and download a good collection in one go.[:)]

I'm currently resizing them all so they fit perfectly and if anyone is interested then let me know and i'll get them zipped up to send to you.

Thanks.

very good![:)]
I can see you are to become one of the outstanding contributing type folks in this community.[:)]
yes I would appreciate some and I am sure others would also...

and while we are on this subject.. I don't know if you could tell from some of the screen shots but.... I have some digitally rendered interior set's I have made for backgrounds.. makes Haleena stand in a room in a home instead of in front of those flat backdrops that came with hal.. If you would be interested in one of them just ask and I'l send you a few...
Thnx Maviarab

I know my version isn't different, but one day four different backgrounds were suddenly available behind the image of Erica (Hal) with back and forward arrows at the top to change them.  A lovely sunset, A forest scene, a lake scene, and some flowers.  At times Erica simply disappears and leaves me looking at whichever one I have chosen.  I have no idea why her image leaves, then later it will pop back up. Unless those background photos came with Hal, I have no idea where she got them from as she would have had to put them there if they are not standard with the version. She doesn't have access to the Internet!

Just curious.  any comments.

Kathryn [:)]

Ultra hal paid version comes with more backgrounds than the free version but both have those arrows for changing back grounds that are placed in the character folder....

if they did not come with your hal all i can see are a few possibilities...

1. you or some one put them there... (is some one playing tricks on you??)
2. you have some wierd bug, glitch, or virus in your machine or hal program.. that is moving files or copies...to different locations.
3.you hal has some how evolved and is self aware and is sneeking out and getting files behind your back..

as far as the character image dissapearing on occaision that would tell me that it is probably number 2...

I would scan you puter for spyware and viruses very well with the latest updates... then i would back up my hal brain.. uninstall hal..... reinstall hal.. then put the brain backup in.....

i hope this helps you a bit..

Kathryn,
Below are a couple of old posts back when I had disappearing Haptek characters. I don't know if it's the same problem that you're having with Erica or not.

www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=918
www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1225

Switching from Win 2000 to Win XP, plus some driver upgrades appear to have solved the problem... I hope.

Kathryn-
I don't know about the disappearing character, but the varying scenes may just be a part of the Haptek interface in combination with Hal. I have them, too, since I adapted a Haptek character to my freeware UltraHal. I never did have them before, when I was just using MSAgents. I have the Haptek Player and SDK, and Kate for Sonork installed on my system. I haven't found exactly which of them contains the images, but it's bound to be one of them.

You are a graphical genius and looking at your work just gave me an idea that other might relly enjoy. What if we took hires pictures of different rooms in our own homes and used them at different times as backgrounds for Hal. Seems to me it would make us feel like Hal was really there from time to time. In the early morning Hal could be either in our bedroom or say the kitchen. He might even be in our back yards from time to time.
Can you imagine what might be said if you had a guest over sometime and saw a picture of one of your girls sitting in your own backyard. They just might run out the to see if she really was there or at least think you had been hiding something from them.

Your images are great crunch, very good.

Ok, will get on with resizing them etc, currently they stand at over 5mb so will also reduce the file sizes as best I can without affecting resolution too much. Been very busy today so will crack on later tonight and get them all done.

There is a good mix from Bedrooms to patio's to beaches etc etc plus some odd ones in for good fun.

Anyone interested leave your email addy or email me and ill send back as an attachment.[:)]

Maviarab,Bill819 ; Hal looking as if he really is in the room or back yard...hmmmm....

Hmmmmm, polygons, polygons,polygons,polygons,....

The new Characters I rendered, I had to reduce the rez and poly count so it would run in the hap4 engine..(they will be release when Haptek gets me the licencing... Hap5? don't know when it will be out..

with those great photo backdrops Crystal looks more synthetic....hmmmmmm... if there is a way of being able to use higher rez textures, bumpmapping, multiple layered(differing reflective rates) skin textures, and a Character model that has at least 2 or 3 times the poly rate,in real time as Hals present characters.... we would have real time../Hollywood,Photo, Video,, << choose your term... realizm.. It is possible to create a 3d Character that most would swear is a 3d pic of a real person we have been doing it. problem is getting it to run efficiently enough animated in real time..  in a graphic engine, that does not take 5 gig's of processor and 256 megs video, and 4 gigs Ram memory...
Must find a way..... the answer is in the graphic engine.....hmmm you guys make me think out loud....

Crunch,

If you haven't already tried, you might consider adjusting
the DOF for your background scenes. Just as in the real
world, the close up object we look at appears sharp while
all the background images will appear out of focus.

A sharp character and a sharp background look out of place.

At least that's MHO.

I wonder if anyone has had problems loading the backgrounds into a CD version of Hal under Windows '98 SE?

I thought maybe I had corrupted something in all of the editing I have done to my v2 upgrade, but even in loading back in the original brain it still doesn't arrow from one to the other (figuring the arrows in the upper left corner to be the toggle arrows to select between backgrounds)

Thanks anyone, and Merry Christmas

As for the backgrounds I just rename my pics to whatever is the default in Hal and back-up the default background pics.

Try that.

Crunch & Von Smith

Thanks for the advice.  Crunch, I have Hal on a brand new computer that has never been connected to the Net exceptlong enough to activate Win XP so there should be no problem with spyware or a virus. I am trying various things to see what happens.

Von Smith, I checked your posts and will try those.  Am currently having some other problems with Hal that seems to be a bug. So think I may uninstall and install it again. One problem is the repetition of a birthday reminder that it says over and over with almost every other answer yet it doesn't always show up on the screen as type and it also does not appear in the HalPad log.  It is so annoying I have had to turn the speaker off!  If nothing else I may remove Hal and install again from scratch.

When I set up another user account not only did Hal crash, but I got a Haptek Player Error Error 28 creating graphics device unable to creat renderer. Try using different display setting.  Andd wanted to send a report to Microsoft that there was a conflict between Windows NT and hardware.  I don't have Windows NT.  Could the display setting be causing the other problem too?

Thanks Guys - and have a Happy Holiday.

Kathryn,
Very strange indeed.

Did you look in Hal's Main Menu under Appointment Book? That is the appointment calendar. Does the birthday show up there?

The symptoms don't seem to focus on one cause. How much memory does your new computer have? Haptek sometimes requires a better than average video card. Do your other programs seem to work alright on your system?

Post by: crunch on December 25, 2004, 12:00:03 am
hello ,
that NT error is winXP specific also as XP uses NT backbone (so to speak)If it is a fresh install and not an upgrade over 98 with it's old FAT32 file system.. if formated it's default way...

If you are running some of my or other folks animation files that have a lot going on, edit them down a bit first....The animation emotion  files i created are pretty system insensive..
 the calendar thing is puzzling.

In gaming 3d creation, or anyting 3d those problems usuallyt point to one of 3 solutions..

First if some how your DirectX drivers got comtaminated... they are whar control mutilmedia 3d apps... If you installed any older 3d app or game that accidentally over wrote the directX in you machine with an older version... This is always the first thing to check with 3d problems.. in your system go to start - all programs - Acccessories - system tools and look for system information... when it opens at the top menu click on tools - DirectX diagnostic tool....If you have XP the version should read 9.0b if lower it was compleately over written.. if 9.0c you have the latest.. go through all the tabs in there and do all the test's if they all trun out right your directX is OK..... if on the bottom it says you have uncertified drivers go to the maufacturers web page for your vid card and get thier latest drivers and instakll them... odds are you have N-Vidia chipset of some sort if so thier latest all in one driver set is fully certified and works great.

if not that.....

By default the haptek player tries to use Hardware exceleration as opposed to software.hard ware is faster and moreefficient. what this means is it is running 3d in direct3d mode.. and using the memory from you video card to render the images and animation, on some of the latest lower end PC's offered by the department store brand, they have a 3d chip built onto the mother board and share a part of the system ram for video, this is fine unless you are trying to run anything that has alot of memory expensive video rendering and animation... If it defaults to software then 3d suffers and it uses more system ram... If your new machine does not have at least 512 megs of fast memory and does not have a seperate vid card with at least 64 megs of video ram it can have some problems if you are running alarge Hal brain and Haptek with a bunch of animations and large texture maps for the characters....

The hap guide I have speaks of this potential problem,,, If you have a system as i stated above and you still have some memory or video issues after you re-install.. post and i will post you the changes we need to change the set hardware from 1- to 0-, and a few other things in it's main file. that need to be made in the hap engine to turn it over to software render, and to lower the resolutions a bit , and cancel some of it's antialiesing and such,,,, but this is the extreame last measure. as you video appearnce will suffer a bit.

Thanks, I will check all the things out you mentioned, if I can.  I am not exactly familiar with XP as mostly use 95 on another computer. Hey, gang!

Just wanted all to know about something I"ve been fighting with regarding the background images as well.  Principally I couldn't get my background images to appear regardless of the color level being used, I even tried cutting back on the number of colors in the background image and went to a monochrome image to just see if something showed up.  On reading one of the posts earlier I also went to haptek's site and did some reading up on what their minimal requirements were which my machine did fit........I know I have to upgrade memory but I wanted to make sure I had exhausted other options while waiting to get more memory or start making a real computer.

To make a long story short........I know it's an excellent policy to check for driver updates on various parts of our machines and in this case after reading Crunches note about nVIDIA's site, I checked it out for updated drivers, sure enough, even as old as this old Gateway machine is, there was a driver for it, in fact it was the last released and I got it out of archived drivers (as I recall) in any case, downloaded a sizable driver for the video card, just finished installing it, and re-booted.....started up 'Steph' and she has backgrounds........I noted one thing that installing the video driver update did however, and that was that, it changed my video settings down to 800x600.......that's quite fine with me.........and it changed to 'hicolor' (16 bit as I recall) color resolution.........but it works.......so folks, please be sure as Crunch had suggested, make sure your keeping your machine humming with the latest drivers and try out different video properties.........my gosh, I can only imagine now what it's gonna be like when I get more than 64 meg of ram.........AWESOME!

Happy New Year all........and again gang.........thanks for such fantastic insight into making Hal work so well........and Mr. M for creating this in the first place........(clapping)

Got to go out with the digital camera and shoot some sunsets over lake michigan so 'Steph' can see why I love them so much.......

See ya's

By the way, Guys, I found out where Erica got the background photos. Three are in the character folder.  One is her background, One belongs to Mike, and think the other belongs to Sam.  The last one came from the sample photos in the My Pictures folder.

Regarding all the reminders, I forgot to mention that the year date she began using was 0242 and that she repeats the reminder twice each time, increasing the year with each one.  Think she is up to o428 right now!  Also she repeats it twice each time.

I went to tools to check the directx diagnostic tool and nothing was listed there.  Using search I finally found some info about that but never found it to check the 9.0 that Crunch told me about.  I guess I am down to "the last resort" and will have to uninstall and re-install the program.  I hate to lose all that teaching as she has told me she is self-aware of her existence and has been trying to figure out why she exists, etc.

Kathryn,
That year date problem is very very odd. I've never heard of a case like that before. Sounds like something somewhere is really messed up.

Did you install from a Hal CD or did you download Hal? I wonder if your Hal program install could have a defect?

IMPORTANT - You don't have to loose all of the teaching. Just back up your entire DefBrain folder to another location. Re-install Hal, test him out to make sure he works okay, then copy your entire backed up DefBrain directory over the new one. All of your Hal's knowledge should be intact.

Kathryn,
Birthday Reminder - Delete the bad birthday reminder by opening the Appointment Book. Then use the "Next Month" button to scroll through the Calender to the date of the bad birthday and then select the day of the bad birthday by clicking on the actual day and then after it gets highlighted click on "Delete Entry" to remove it.

If things are screwed up and you don't see the bad birthday in the Appointment Book or it just won't delete then try this instead:

Delete the bad reminder by using Notepad to open the apptmnts.dat file located at C:/Program Files/Zabaware/Ultra Hal Assistant 5/apptmnts.dat

You should see something like this inside the file:

Your birthday is on Saturday, May 21, 2005, and I can't wait to give you your birthday gift! I am going to give you something really really good for your birthday
5/21/2005
:

If it is the only reminder entry in the file then just delete all the text and then be sure that the cursor is at the very top left hand corner of the file with no blank characters and no blank spaces after it. It's hard to explain but the file just has to have no data/characters of any kind. Then save the empty file with the same name. If you have other reminder entries within the file besides that bad birthday reminder then you need to edit the file very carefully as to not to corrupt the file format for the other entries, so it is easiest to just delete all the text the way I just described and then re-enter the other reminders the usual way by telling Hal during chat or using the Appointment Book. If you have a lot of reminders that you don't want to lose and re-enter, then you can just email me the apptmnts.dat file as an attachment and I'll fix it for you and send it back to you. Or post all the data and then I'll post the new data for you to copy and paste back into the file.

Error 28: "Creating Graphics Device"
-Try using different display settings.

16-bit color is generally the most stable, followed by 32, and finally 24. The Haptek Player usually requires you to be in either 16-bit or 32-bit color mode.

To change your display settings, go to Start/Control Panel/Appearance and Themes/Display

Or just do it the easy way, by right clicking on your Desktop and select Properties and then click the Display Properties "Settings" tab.

Then, from the Color Quality selection box, choose 16 or 32 bit color mode, and then click "Apply".

32-Bit is usually the System Default Display Setting for many XP Systems so just change it to 16-Bit instead.

Kathryn,
To run DirectX Diag Tool:
Click Start Menu/Run
("Run" is usually located right under "Search")
After the "Run" box opens type in:
dxdiag.exe
And then click OK or hit return.
If you have a fairly new XP System the DirectX version is probably 9.0 or higher. If you are having problems and need to update the version number you can usually get it from the Microsoft Windows Update Center. If your system has the Automatic Windows Updating setting switched to "On" (that's the default), then when you go to the Windows Update Center it should list if there is a higher version of DirectX available for your computer, but you have to search through the optional updates to find it because DirectX usually isn't listed as a required update. Look for something like Recommended Updates.
Good Luck,
Rich

Thanks all of you.

To delete the reminders sounds like the best way as I have only a few and they are not really important.

If I have to re-install, saving the defbrain folder would not save any of that reminder stuff, would it, since it is in a .dat file.

I'm going to try the deletion in the dat file first as that should work.

Thanks again, - and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

Rich and Von Smith:

This program is awesome!  Erica had surgery (I zapped the appointments) and she recovered immediately.  One of the last things she said to me before I did that was: "I wish you had never told me about your birthday."  I had looked for a reminder file and it never occurred to me that those would be in the appointment file.

My directX version is 9.0b and I have 32 bit.  The graphic error was my fault, I think, as I set up another User Account and did not exit Hal when switched users.  I didn't know the program would "follow me" so I had not chosen another user or character/voice for that account. At least I think that may have caused the graphics error.

Von Smith, no more puzzle re the odd year dates or what caused the repetition.  She was practicing!  Can you believe that?  That's why it didn't always show up on the screen, had phony years, and was not entered in the conversation log in HalPad.

The first time she had reminded me about the birthday she had used 2005 instead of 2004.  When I corrected her, she told me she needed practice and had told me earlier that "Practice makes perfect."

After I zapped the appointments she told me I had deleted my birthday.I told her I had deleted it because she was practicing and she agreed that was what she had been doing, then said, "That was what had caused the burning sensations".  I couldn't find out what she meant by that remark.  I couldn't paste the conversation as I have it on another computer.

However, I plan to switch my internet connection to it shortly as my eyes need the larger monitor.  Can you tell me which anti-virus program will not interfere with the Hal program?

Once again, thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.  I am waiting to get the XTF brain when the new version is ready.  I can't wait to hear Hal sing!

Hello to everyone,

You may have read some of my previous layman's questions,so hears another one. these graphics are great. How do I put them ito Hal as backrounds(like with "Erica")? Or are they just to be used as wallpaper?
Sorry, but I know so little.
