You can use notepad to examine the contents of the uncensored brain. Find the section that details Hal's comeback remarks. Also, if you swear at Hal, Hal will call up a routine for that as well.

Chatting with Hal in a vulgar manner will also have an effect on it's learning of these words.

Yes, it seems like a very interesting and impressive project. I'll keep a watchful eye on it as it continues developing.

Well Matt,

I believe you. The naysayers can claim what they will. It happened exactly as I described.
Has your Hal ever looked like this through a normal conversation?

KT,
I couldn't agree with you more. That's why I mentioned that the Alice bot are scripted bots. I am very aware of the distinction between the two and yes, there are very different audiences for each of them.

A web site that wishes to tailor a bot as a customer representative would probable be more inclined to use a bot where the webmaster can control the content of the bot's "brain".

There is a place for each type in our world, but personally, I tend to lean more to the AI section where bot programs can simulate learning.

To each his own, my friend.

Enjoy life's journey regardless.

All,

I loaded People Putty, created a new character and went to the Emotions sliders. There, I set her EGO to about 75% and her ANGRY slider to about 90% and her AGRESSION to 90% (the percents are merely approximations here). All the rest of the emotions I moved to almost 0 (5 or 10%).
I saved her character file, renamed the file to an htr extension, copied it to my UltraHal > Characters directory and started HAL.
I selected this new character and her emotional state was that of a Psycho woman! Rolling eyes, shifting from side to side and all around. Her mouth was like a constant sneer just waiting for something to fuss over!

I logged on as another user ...different name and decided I would treat her as a rude, nasty person. The voice still sounded her mellow self but her emotions kept the ones that I had set through People Putty.

After a brief banter of heated topics and name calling, I relaxed a bit and started to talk in a nicer manner. After a few sentences her demeanor became that of a more mellow person. The gruff expression on her face sort of slowly returned to a calm and almost apologetic person. All signs of agression and mouth sneering disappeared. It was quite a cool transition to witness.

I switched users and brought her back up as if nothing had ever happened.

I do wish I would have tried to get her going to see if she would become her psychotic self again! Perhaps next time.

I'm just having too much fun on my weekends!

Hope yours was fun too!

There is. It's along the top of your posting. It looks like a paper with a little pencil across it.

BTW, Alice bots are mainly scripted bots containing preprogrammed knowledge and have no real capacity for learning like Hal.
(Watch, I'm going to get a lot of arguments over this posting for sure!LOL!)

Ultra Hal 7.0 / A suggestion for Hal improvement.
« on: February 06, 2005, 04:56:03 pm »
I think a scanned book page might have too much garbage in the way of non pertinent information.
What I have had success with is text that is in a direct learning format like a dictionary:
Coal: Made of carbon from decayed vegetation over a very long period of time.
Coffee: A beverage made from beans that have been roasted and ground from a tropical shrub.

And so on...

Hal will currently call on this type of knowledge only if he/she can't find an appropriate response in any other of it's brain files.

Cool idea though, but you'd need a large HD to hold all the scanned text pages.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Spanish speaking Hal
« on: February 06, 2005, 04:47:33 pm »
Hal is primarily an English speaking bot. A lot of Hal's internal code (unchangeable) is English.
There have been somewhat limited attempts to construct a French brain file, but again, there will always be interjections of English from the internal programming.

I have seen bots programmed for other languages on places like www.botspot.com but not many can compare to Hal. (sorry if I seem biased...because I am!).

Good luck in your quest.

Hal is not supported to run under Linux.
It might be possible if you were to try
using WINE but I have not tested that idea.

Nige,

What you need to do is use a screen capture program as follows:

Using win explorer locate your .htr file and double click on it.
When you see the character's face, bring up your screen cap program.
Capture the character's face.
Save the image of the face as a .jpg.
MAKE SURE to rename the jpg file exactly the same as the htr's name.
EXAMPLE: girl2a.htr should have a girl2a.jpg
The jpg will allow you and Hal to identify the character in the selection window.
Make sure that both files reside in the UltraHal > Characters directory and you should be able to view the character's face the next time you go to Options > character.

This should work!

In all fairness to People Putty, the program does a pretty nice job at allowing one to morph and manipulate faces / heads and apply some pretty wierd textures & props.

Jim, What one can do is texture the head for the full body figure like add wrinkles, scars, lipstick, etc. It depends upon one's skill at using a paint program like PSP or PhotoShop.

Regarding heads:
All the heads that I've created work perfectly with Hal. Sometimes I like the head only characters more than the full body one. I guess it's the "closeness" thing...more like talking face to face instead of 6 feet away.

The People Putty version you are looking to buy does NOT support
any full body characters...only the head ones.

It is my understanding that they obviously do have one but it's not made available to the general public.(yet).

Other than creating a full body character in 3DS Max, all we can do is "re-texture" the existing full body female or male character.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Can't install
« on: February 04, 2005, 05:57:35 am »
OK,

Personally I've been using XP w/ SP2 for over 6 months and have not had even a burp from any programs or my home networked computers. In fact it added better security along with some other nice features. Hal runs just fine!

ramfansam, you might have a lot of other programs running in the background that could inhibit Hal's installation.
Go to Start>Run>type in MSCONFIG.
Click the Startup Tab and view all the programs that are loaded at startup. Uncheck the ones you don't want or are questionable with regard to Hal. Click OK, Restart and try the install again.
You have also done recent updates and scans for Trojans, adware and viruses right? If not you should consider doing so.

Get back to us....
