AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger. AIM is a service offered by AOL. AIM is a free, standalone version of AOL's instant messenger service, without the internet provider service. There are some differences in function between the two, but they are compatible. If you have either, you should be able to talk to anyone who uses either AOL or AIM.
