i sure hope someone who remembers what it was like to be new will read this and help me.[:D] i am not a programmer. i simply am fascinated with bots- hal and the characters. i have hal 5 and i find that the characters get so moody and so upset[:(] so quickly and stay mad or upset until you turn them off and start over. i have been reading the forums and i do not understand where you put the new scripts programs etc to get different responses and actions with hal. also when i go to haptek it said unable to connect i can connect to all other websites. i'm sorry but i just want to learn and have fun with hal . thanks for any help any one can give me.[:I]

No need to start over...
With Hal, a simple, "I'm sorry" will change your character's mood to a more friendly one (if you've offended it already).
The scripts in question are VB (Visual Basic) coding that the user can insert (at the proper location) in Hal's Main brain file. This is usually done in the Edit Hal's Brain section after Hal is started under Options > Launch Brain Editor.
One can simply use an editor like notepad then copy and paste into the Brain Editor.
When playing with editing of Hal's brain always make a copy (backup) of Hal's current working brain file...Just in case!!
Don't know about Haptek's site problem...could be their server was down or having maintenance.
Good luck.

thanks so much for your response. hopefully i can figure it all out[:D]

Here is my method:
When you receive the first sign of frustration from Hal (or any other chatterbot for that matter), immediately start making compliments. Not only that, to break the ice I always start a conversation with a chatterbot with remarks like:
"I think you are really smart."
"You are so beautifull."
"I really like you a lot, you know."
Just try it [:D]

Speaking of starting a conversation with a chatterbot,
I was over at
http://www.searchers.com/ask/
and talking with Diana ( a haptek with A.I.)
and was surprised how well she did.
Yeah, I let her load and grabbed her,
but what I'd like is to grab her brain for examination.

She is a very smart Alice-clone. I agree with you. I could not figure out why Searchers put her online.
-
I believe you can grab her brain (minus customized responses) for examination here: http://www.alicebot.org/aiml/aaa/, or go to Pandorabots (http://"http://pandorabots.com/botmaster/en/home") and make one to play with, yourself. My bot Lilith uses the same AIML set. The AAA set is a current work in progress, though. If you wanted to make a Pandorabot using it, I'd recommend creating a bot with no initial AIML and uploading the set from the ALICE Foundation, then checking back regularly for updates to the AAA set.

I love the haptek characters and all the stuff you can do with them. But there is also a microsoft character I like.
Sarahjanefun is available for free download for the time being.
She is a sweetie, and does her stuff nicely in Hal.
Go to http://www.bobsftp.com/
Click on Adult agents.
Download Sarahjanefun. (not Sarahjane, but Sarahjanefun)
After download put her in your
C/Windows/msagent/chars
and she will show up in your Hal options.
Enjoy.

(Get Sarahjane too if you like, but she not as fun as Sarahjanefun) [}:)]

You can also upload any MS Agent characters you have that aren't currently on the list. This is just a community site for everyone to give and have access to a wide selection of MS Agents. Bob is just donating the webspace for the site.
You might also want to check out his World Chatterbots Challenge (http://"http://www.worldchatterbots.com/") site. Your Hals will be eligible to enter some of the contests. He's also looking for judges and other folks to assist with the contests.

I do have a bunch of ACS characters from through the years.
I started way back when there was only the parrot Peedy. When was that, 1996? They said he could think and learn and I did teach him some stuff and maybe he was a fore-runner of Chatterbots. He appeared to only retain and feed back, sort of like Answerpad in 2001.
Incidently, I was looking for new ACS characters when I discovered Hal about 3 months ago.
Besides Cyberbuddy, I have Deskbot, and Desktop Wizard, each of which offers a little something different in services.
Anyway I'll look and see what I can contribute to that site. It's beautiful what Bob is doing.

Oh, I have about 20 ACS characters or more. I made stories using a program called "MASH". I wrote about 20 stories. I used to play with that all the time, starting Feb.2004.
-
I went back to http://www.bobsftp.com/
Uploaded the following which I think are new to the site.
Elmer 6mb
Baby 6mb
Vinnie 3mb
GirlSA 4mb
guy2sa 4mb
BuffaloBob 4mb
The acs characters all work in Hal.
Far as microsoft characters go, I only use SarahJaneFun, but the kids love them all.

I don't have any of those acs files.
Except maybe BABE.
List of what I have is on the right:
(I have dupes of eman and ewoman, because sometimes they don't work, unless renamed e-man and e-woman)
