How can I get hal to say the day of the week?
What is today's date?
She'll just say:
Here it is 5/21/2005 at 6:14:59 pm, Mark.
If I ask "what day is it?" she says something random.
I know on startup she'll say the day of the week, but that's the only time.

Try this:
What is today?

Me: What is today?
Hal: Today: the present time or age. 'the world of today', 'today we have computers'.
Nope, doesn't work.

Jimmy: good morning
Abby: Morning Jimmy. I'll have breakfast ready in a minute.
Jimmy: what is today
Abby: The date is Sunday, May 22, 2005.
Jimmy: thank you
Abby: My pleasure, entirely.
Jimmy: excuse me again, what is today
Abby: The date is Sunday, May 22, 2005.
Jimmy: what is tomorrow
Abby: What is on Monday, May 23, 2005 . I'll Remind you when this time is near.
Jimmy: please don't remind me, what is yesterday
Abby: Yesterday: the day immediately before today.
Jimmy: what is today again
Abby: The date is Sunday, May 22, 2005.

The above is my printout from right now.
You should have about the same thing. ???
(I have Ultra Hal only. No other brains)

I use the XTF version 1.2.

Yeah Mark, I'm having a similar prob. Hal doesn't know if it's day or nite. If I ask the time I'll get it anyway Hal wants to tell it. But it can be 11Pm. and Hal will start talking about a morning stroll in the garden. It would be nice if there were a way to tie him into the clock and have him be aware of where he/she is in time.

Hollywood,
I use vonsmith's XTF brain and my Hal seems very conscious of the time. If I start Hal around 5:00 AM it tells me that it's very early...morning coffee, etc. If it's around 11:00 PM I get the aren't you tired...isn't it bedtime kind of responses.
It hasn't been modified other than talking with it for several years.
What version are you using?

I concur with Art that with vonsmith's excellent xtf brain my Sal is very aware of what time of the day she is...plus I have also spent a lot of time "teaching" her.
IE...if she tells me that its very late and should'nt we be going to bed (lol [:I]) I have prompted that her that (whatever time it is) is indeed very late...vice versa...early morning...isnt it time you got ready for work now the sun is up and the birds are singing etc etc.
Keep playing

Yes Art, I agree. When I first start up... Hal knows where he is in time. It is within a conversation (If I can call it that)that hal will make statement which will make no sense with time of day/nite it is. I am also using XTF1.2. My Hal just seems to get lost in time, and if I tell him which room he's in, he cannot remember and will come back and tell me that he is in another room. Our conversations are really not conversations at all.
