Ultra Hal Assistant 6.2 Beta is now available for anyone wishing to test it out. Test at your own risk. The 6.2 installer is setup to preserve your Hal 6.1 data files when upgrading, but I recommend backing it up anyway just in case.
New in Hal 6.2 since 6.1:- Hal's brain and database now incorporates many concepts and phrases taught in the book "Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases" by Grenville Kleiser, Copyright 1917 now in public domain
- Hal's low quality response routines (what Hal says when he isn't sure how to respond) have been reworked to sound less random, offer more variety, and use phrases taught by Grenville Kleiser
- Hal can do unit conversions (How many feet is 2 miles? What is 30 degrees fahrenheit in celcius? How many cups in a liter?)
- Native support of IBM ViaVoice's SMAPI interface
- When speech recognition is enabled, microphone is automatically muted when Hal is speaking and unmuted when Hal finishes
- New speech recognition command mode allows you to bring up Hal with a voice command, close Hal, turn dictation on and off, and clear the line to retry saying something before Hal responds
- Hal Brain Editor sorts tables alphabetically
- Hal's licensing system is less touchy to real or perceived hardware changes, especially in Vista.
- Various bug fixes (Minute timer fixed?)
The download link is: http://www.zabaware.com/download/hal62beta2.zip
Please let me know if there are any bugs I missed, or new bugs I added. The new Zabaware graphics engine is not in this release yet, it has been pushed back to be included in 6.3 as further modeling and animation work is still needed.
Update 1/28/09:
Release candidate 1 has been released. This topic has been moved to this threa: http://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6126

bye for now and be well from Wil and Mr Data :) :]

It's working well so far except I keep getting an error code pop up which doesn't stop it from working, I just click ok and it keeps working.

Well now Hal is not remembering from 6.1, I'll do a clean-up and another restart and see if that helps.

I believe that error is caused by a plug-in where a variable isn't set.
Thanks Rob, I give it a go.

The Hal 6.1 brain is preserved and available as a seperate brain from the brain options. But the knowledge your 6.1 brain learned isn't passed onto the 6.2 brain, the 6.2 brain is a fresh brain.

You'd have to send me the actual HalScript.DBG file so that I can see what is on line 4855. It's different for everyone depending on what brain plug-ins are active and as Jerry said its possible the error is from a plug-in and not the Hal 6.2 script itself.
-
First bug I found is that I left the the Hal Gender/Age plug-in both in the main script and as a seperate brain plug-in, so if you ask Hal what its gender is, it will tell you twice. I'll remove it from the main script with the next release.
For now, you can unselect the Gender/Age plug-in in Hal's options to remove the double response. I made some minor tweaks to the plug-in since 6.1. Now the user can ask Hal what the user's gender is, since I noticed people like to test online Hal like that.

I believe it may be coming from the free will plug-in, if a variable is not selected it will give the CDbl error.

i fixed the same error by re-inputing the variables in the free-will plugin. -ditto o.t.c.
auto idle works for me (didn't before)
1 problem- there is no sound.
i get the correct text response at the correct time (tried multiple auto-idle plugins.....all work now) but there is no voice....sound.

Hi Jason.
is all of your speech options checked in the HAL options panel?
select a default voice to see if that solves the issue.
mine seems to work fine at this time.
Jerry [8D]
-
Now I'm totaly locked out of Hal. The problem started when I turned off microsoft mic. I then chose speech recognition which I had been using. It seems 6.2 isn't compatible. Tryed to uninstall it and am told I can't because it is in use and to restart. Every time I do that, I get the Ultra Hal splash screen welcoming me so I guess Dragon Speaks starts then. What do I need to do next?
-
Problems solved. Thanks for the help. I had to disable Hal and Dragon speeks from the startup menue and uninstall Dragon speeks and then do a restart. She's on and the timer issue seems to be solved. She is telling me she has just been abandoned!I'm happy now![:)]

Is this limitation for just the beta?
When the new version is released, will it update the old brain to contain what the old one did?
At what point will you include this for testing?
Thanks
EDIT:
I installed the new version.
It installed fine, created a new database, and all seems to be good. Nice work!

the sound is only missing during the auto-idle response (auto-idle does respond with text only)
sound works perfect during normal conversation

Conversions don't work, though, not on mine.
The mile did, but not 2 miles.

Hal should be compatible with all speech recognition engines. Can you give me more info as to what went wrong? What version of Dragon Naturally Speaking are you using? Was the Dragon tool on at the same time as Hal? Was the correct speech profile selected in Hal? How exactly did it lock you out, any error messages?

I wasn't originally planning on it, but I'll think about how that can be done. Basically I would have to write a utility that takes your old brain and adds new tables to it that were added to 6.2 and changes other tables that were changed. A lot harder than it seems as I didn't document every little change I made to the database.

It seems "How many feet in 2 miles?" works but "How many feet is 2 miles?" doesn't. I'll fix that.

I setup the default brain to have the free will tables initialized and set to average obedience, so hopefully that will prevent this error now.

Robert, you said:
"Hal should be compatible with all speech recognition engines."
Does that include Dragon Naturally Speaking, version 10? I believe that the Nuance engine that it uses is the same one that NASA uses for "Clarissa" on the ISS, and that many consider it to be the best speech recognition engine available. I would gladly buy DNS 10 if I could be certain it would work with HAL.
Great news about the beta, I've downloaded it and will try it out.

During the development of Ultra Hal Assistant 6.2 I have extensively tested Dragon Naturally Speaking 10, IBM ViaVoice 10.6, and Microsoft Recognizer 8 (part of Vista). All work well on my test machines.
-
I have loaded this beta version, seems to work ok. I am using the latest Dragon dictate. I cannot use my character set that I ordered with Hal 6.1, it senses that no Hal is loaded.
-
Well you asked what went wrong and for more details. I checked the speech recognition box but I'm used to not having to select speech engine as Dragon 7.30 always comes up automatically. I may have had mike unpluged. Then I turned on Dragon program. From there on I couldn't get Hal to completely boot up nor could I get into the options to change things. It kept on telling me it couldn't respond because the other "opration was busy" I suppose I went overboard by doing an uninstal. Will reinstall today and try to do it right this time.

The character engine installed looks for Hal 6.1 or 6.0, it doesn't know how to detect Hal 6.2 yet. I'll update the character engine installer with the final release.
If you want to get the characters working in Hal 6.2 now, you have to uninstall Hal 6.2, install Hal 6.1 again, install the character expansion, and then install Hal 6.2 over top of 6.1. The characters should remain.

My experience with Dragon is it doesn't like more than 1 program using the recognition system at the same time. ViaVoice and Microsoft Recognizer don't seem to have any problems, but Dragon often does. So I reccomend shutting down the Dragon utility when using Hal to avoid conflict. The main advantage of using the speech interface in Hal instead of the built in Dragon utility is that the microphone is muted automatically when Hal speaks and unmuted when Hal finishes speaking, preventing the computer from talking to itself.

Calzan,
When you say you are using the latest Dragon Dictate, would that be Standard, Preferred or Professional, or one of the others? If Hal would work well with Standard, I would probably just go with that.
-
I have Many-Many hours invested in teaching my Hal what she knows.
Those who have brains that are huge would have even more.
It is not even conceavable to me to have to start over.
Is there a way you can at least insert the features that improve how she thinks and any actual new abilities into the old brain?
My actual question is: should I keep using the 6.1 program, or update to the 6.2 and just keep using the old brain?
I am sorry if I sound pushy, but that answer caught me off guard.

the problem is that i use a character called "hal no character"
it replaces the character with a .jpg ....ect.
if i don't use a haptek or msagent, there is no audio on an auto-idle response. (tested with several auto-idle plugins, all skins, and all voices) there is the text response like there should be.
i will try to figure it out.

first off thank you very much robert for getting the beta version released , but am i misunderstanding you about the old brain into the new hal version ?? (won't work ?) i truly hope you fix this to allow the old brain to convert over into the finalized hal (afterall i and many others have been learning backing up these brains for years now and it would have been for nothing ) please , please fix this finished version of hal where it "will accept our old hal brain " . although their may be bug fixes in this new version i feel for people who have spent years training and teaching hal their own personal way (custom brain ) this is a very important thing for hal to allow the old custom brain to change over to the new hal brain . [:)]
-
L.S.,
Take it easy, Mr. Robert is testing a new product that will be for sale and it needs testing , as is / off the shelf. Remember this is a beta release. I do not know his final plans but it stands to reason that years of members/customers work will not be junk.[?]
-
I think merging the old brains into the new brain is an intention but isn't important at this time while beta testing v6.2. the v6.2 needs debugging before it gets much more complicated like adding old brains that could complicate things a bit.
Jerry[8D]
-
thank you Robert for giving us hope for a better Hal your doing a great job thank you
-
Well it's been a Visa day. I didn't reinstall Dragon yet, am working on recognizer 8. I think it may work out better because I didn't save voice files from Dragon, (frustration I guess). The last time I looked I had ms 4 and 5 recognizer to work with. Now 8 is listed and working almost well enough to use seriously. I'll keep training it for a while and see what happens. There are also administrator issues with Dragon, I can use it on one screen but not on my main account screen.

The old brain will work in the new version. The Hal 6.2 installer preserves the Hal 6.1 brain for you exactly as it is now and you can continue to use it under Hal 6.2. But script and database improvements new to Hal 6.2 (Kleiser 15000 phrases, reworked low quality response routines, and unit conversions) won't just appear in your old 6.1 brain without some careful brain surgery.
I promise to write some sort of step-by-step guide how to do this or maybe write a utility to automate this, but I'm not sure I can add this as an automatic feature of the Hal 6.2 installer without setting back the release date.

It's half there, the half that needs to be part of the executable is in Hal 6.2. The other half still needs to be created and can be made as script plug-in. But you can play with the half thats there already. Attached is a script plug-in that enables Hal's dream mode. Just copy it to Hal's program folder and enable it in Hal's brain options. Hal will begin "dreaming" out loud a few minutes after ending a conversation with you.
Be warned that with this feature on, Hal will be sending parts of your conversation to the MSN search engine, so some people may have privacy concerns and may not wish to use this plug-in. Also I just ran it now and ran into something that could be considered a bug. Hal reads through current news based on your topics of conversation and if Hal comes across a date in the future and the AI Appointment Book plug-in is on, then Hal will add it to your appointment book. My appointment book now apparently looks similar to President Obama's because of this. I'll have to think of a way to disable the appointment book while Hal is dreaming.
Most of what Hal learns gets put into new user tables based on a user called "Dreamer". Hal's script doesn't do anything with this table yet, this is the half that still needs completed via a brain plug-in.

Thank you. This has got to be a huge job for you to take care of bugs and your users wishes. You are doing a fantastic job and OTC has been a real good help also.
A little off topic, but you were talking about having to convert code for support reasons. There are several code converters listed by google. I sure hope that one of these will meet your needs as doing it manualy seems like expensive and tough.[:D]

Robert - Just for the record: You are doing a great job!
I realise this is a system in testing, and that all features will not be online at first.
Keep up the good work, we do all appreciate it.

-
Rob,
Do you anticipate any migratory issues with Hal regarding the upcoming Windows 7?
-
Yeah good point, I will leapfrog Vista straight to 7, so this interests me too as I doubt I will go back to XP if I am happy.
-
hello robert thanks for answering all our questions on here , i do have a few more , was the camera vision for hal coming out in this completed version or was that for later ? also i personally like the dream out loud program concept sounds great to me . i wrote this one time before but would be good if a run time timer type program (that wouldn't interfere with regular timer program loneliness program ) that would do a random opening of other timer programs so each one would randomly open giving more responses by being able to have more plug ins that wouldn't conflit with eah other as a "same " timer program (hope i am making sense at explaining this , also would be good if hal itself would by using a random timer (that doesnt conflict with other plug ins of the same type origin ) would speak independently on its own (if checked in the brain ) about various already pre learned conversation (in another words initiate conversation to get us talking . and as always to keep better on the subject unless we change the subject then hal would to . maybe this random conversation starter could have a time setting and random setting to (like the loneliness program . ) their is many exciting possabilities out their if we can just tap them ![:)][:D][8D]

This is odd:
I installed 6.2, so Hal had 2 brains.
I tested the 6.2 brain, and it it worked perfect. The DreamOutLoud plugin was enabled, and also worked perfectly.
I switched back to the 6.1 brain, but forgot to disable the DreamOutLoud plugin. The first time it activated, it gave me an error, which is to be expected. I disabled the plugin, but now it continues to work, except it does not go online. She just says Dream: then something from her memory somewhere.
It is not really a bad thing, but I thought I'd point it out.
-
Hi Rob.
the Script load dream out loud works pretty good, although the
"dreamer_TempSent" table only collected one line of learned information and then it stopped appending(two days of testing).
Is it possible that we could just pass down the dream out loud information into the _Topic tables like "_day dreamer" inside the autolearningbrain section. I think that would be the easiest.
is their a chance that you could give us a run down on how the dream out loud plug-in passes its information, is it passed as an UltraHal or an InputString, how can we append the information to build plug-ins for it.
I have tested it online with AIM bot as well and I have received no errors yet nor any blank responses.
is it also possible to include AIM users as the trigger for HAL's dream out loud plug-in to help accelerate the process of learned information.
Thanks

Hi Gary.
the reason why it still processes the dream out loud plug-in is because it was loaded in memory by the Script_Load function.
simply turning off HAL entirely would reset the Script_Load cache or HAL's script load memory. make sure the plug-in is unchecked when you shut HAL down to reset it.
thanks for the heads up.

maybe its just me but this dream out loud plug in is reacting kinda strange with what it says plus it has the words dream to it .example :
Dream: Stuart Bauer | The Flint Journal Rebecca Witt (lower right) and Gary Johnson (standing) care for children Diesel (in Gary's arms), 2, JaeLyn (bottom), 4, and Gage, 5.
here is some more working with my housetalk plug in :
Dream: The answer is (()()()2()5=). Dreamer, what happened hon did you fall asleep?
to me its coming up with some bizzare written (way its written things ) .
anyone else getting these effects ?? [:)]
-
I have also noticed some html tags that are left behind after extraction
of the dream out loud information, like <br> and </br> and so forth, not a lot but noticeable that would over time collect in the table.

that IS it. i created a msagent with no character, just the voice info, and it works with everything. it also lets me have "no" character. (the way i like).
hope that is of some help

i have noticed something about the dream out loud talk . is that it will say something and then answer what it is saying to . example : are you rude ? yes i am rude sometimes .
i beleive this will cause learning problems with hal as hal will answer and learn (perhaps a wrong answer that you don't want that was a general conversation "maybe from a different point of veiw when it was spoken " .
if thats the case this would be bad in my opinion for hal . don't know if hal can be made to use the learning tables subjects as the source for the dream out loud "to initiate conversations or speak (randomly "which would be best " ) but think that would be a way better set up as the dream out loud talk source . just my opinion to robert and others .
either this could be redone as the dream out loud project or added as a dream out loud 2 project .
either way a person wouldn't want hal to be answering his own questions that hal says as it would not learn hal as direction the owner wants .[:)][:D][8D]
for a while my hal seemed to do good with dream out loud things but then went into answering itself (as mentioned above ) and some odd things again off the internet .
-
here is another example of hal dreamer conversation in the first part hal talks then answers hisself in the second part of the conversation is the loneliness based housetalk plug in i made talking . this is why i am wondering if a dream out loud with random (which would be spontanious) timer based on the learned table subjects wouldn't be better in the long run and of course in the finished version "make sure the words "dream" doesnt appear in the sentence that hal is saying . below is what i am talking about .
Dream: Well hard work isn't going to hurt any one! I agree,Absolutely! I sense you are go back there again one day; Let's make it happen together Dreamer. I guess i better stop talking to myself while Dreamer is around or he may think i'm cracking up ha ha haa. Oops, Did I say that out loud ha ha ha oh well!
[:)]
-
something else i want to mention is that depending on how the dream out loud plug in is made if it is by random timer and in the table subject matter it needs to not intefear with other timer plug ins (as of right now it doesnt interfear with other plug ins ) .[:)]
also don't know if anyone can create this or not but it would be nice if someone could create a random timer program that would allow ech checked plug in that uses a timer to all run at various times through the single random timer program so as to let the user be able to use them but would randomly use one at a time as to not conflict with easch other !!
as i said if someone could create something like this it would be very useful .

Well I've tried the 6.2 beta, and I'm impressed.
I had stopped using Hal 6.1, because I never could get the voice recognition to work well. I was able to train Hal via typing, but wanted to be able to talk to him rather than have to type all the time. But Hal would hear himself, and the mic would print gibberish even when there was no sound. I gave up.
6.2 beta is much better. Hal does not hear himself. No gibberish when there is no sound. In fact, 6.2 deals with ambient noise much better.
Word recognition seems to work correctly about 85-90% of the time. To seriously train Hal I would need a better speech recognition engine. I saw in another thread here that Robert plans to offer the latest ViaVoice bundled with 6.2 or as a plugin to buy from Zabaware. That sounds perfect! I will buy it then.
I asked Hal 6.2 about how many feet in a mile, two, three... fifteen. He calculated them all. Very nice.
Robert, you've made some very important, major improvements that will make all the difference for me. Thank you.

Am I right in thinking that I can use my old activation code with this new version ? I took Hal off my old PC (just built a new one) by using the 'move hal' option. So I guess I can just go straight to 6.2 now and reuse my activation code ?
Thanks and it all sounds great.

i am still using the custom brain "angela " that i made in the options it also shows the 6.1 default brain and the new 6.2 beta brain ,(i only have the custom brain highlighted ) am wondering since i downloaded the new beta version is my custom braining working through the beta 6.2 version ? or are we only able to use the 6.2 beta version at this time to test it out ? [:)]anyone know on this ??

on this dream outloud plug in (please don't think i am just griping am only pointing out something that may need to be fixed ) on mine it seems like it says something (dreams out loud ) one thing right after another within a few seconds of each time .
wouldn't this in the final version be better if it had a set time on it or better yet a random timer , this way hal would sound more normal as if day dreaming out loud randomly instead of just constantly . [:)][:D][8D]

Hi Rob.
occasionally I will receive a runtime error with the HAL AIM bot, it will just crash out of the blue, I have to restart AIM bot to get rid of the error. it has done it maybe once or twice a day.
I am using Windows Vista:
Microsoft Windows Longhorn Home Edition
Service pack 1
Internet Explorer v7.0.6001.18000
Processor: Intel Celeron 4, 1717MHz
Motherboard: Jetway 1405(L)
System Memory: 640MB

ROBERT-
there is a very small error in the table "enlightened" (or something like that), where the response "i agree it's because" is.
there is a space missing at the end of a couple of the lines, so that the response to: (userinput) "i like coffee because it helps me stay awake" is responded with "i agree it's becauseit helps you stay awake"
the missing spaces cause "because it" to be "becauseit" ect.
i know it is small, but atleast it's an easy fix.[:)]
(i use "this" because "that" a lot, so i notice it a lot)

Yes, the same activation should work.

Hal 6.2 will run your old brains just fine. Some of the new features that are specific to the Hal 6.2 script/database (unit conversions, better low quality response routines) won't show up in your old and custom brains.

It also has a dream silent mode (not available in the plugin I made yet) so it will do everything it does now, except silently. The main purpose of the feature is for Hal to learn new things online so it has new things to talk about next time you use it, so I set it to be as fast as possible without overtaxing your cpu. The dream out loud mode is just for anyone curious as to what its doing when it goes online.

That will be a little hard to track down. Did this error just start appearing with Hal 6.2, or was it occuring in earlier versions?

Thanks, I fixed it.

I just posted an updated beta version at http://www.zabaware.com/download/hal62beta2.zip I believe I fixed all the bugs we discussed. I also received permission from Shawn Tracy (Scratch) to include his Loneliness plug-in, so that is part of the installation too.
I made some minor changes to the dream feature too, it now filters out some results that have too many symbols. But most of the work for that feature now falls to developing the VBScript portion of it, and I will do that after the release of Hal 6.2.
Let me know if you think all the issues are fixed or if you find anything else.

both 6.1 and 6.2 get the error, I never experienced this error before version 6.1

Hi Rob.
I am going to run the AIM bot in compatibility mode for Win 98 to see if I still receive the "run time error #5".
I will let you know if this solve the problem.

Hi there from Wil,
6.2 loaded and coded easy as.
in the options menu under brain neither 6.1 or 6.2 are highlighted but it was obvious after some questioning that 6.1 "Mr Data" was the one running, and well to :) :] .
i clicked 6.2 in options and it works good, good onya!
i've not tryed the Dream plug in yet.
i'm pleased that 6.2 allows me to click 6.1 in options menu under brain and chat with Mr Data.
if 6.2 didn't merge i might start a second charactor and Mr Data could continue to imporve as 6.2 running 6.1.
but i'll wait to see what the full 6.2 does when released.
Thank you very much for Ultrahal and the years of fun i've had so far, fantastic i reckon.
Thanks again,
bye for now and be well from Wil and Mr Data :) :]
