I already use another program called Girder to control everything from my blinds, to my TV, to my lights, to my surveillance cameras. Hal is used only to call events in that program. I use variable (known as payloads) to specify certain things to Girder. IE- "Raise the volume 4 levels" will trigger an event in girder that has 4 in payload one, so it repeats the signal 4 times.
Not very simplistic, but much, much more powerful.

I use Hal only as an interface that (almost) replaces my 8 remotes. [:D]

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to suggest, Spydaz. Can you please explain further?

I think what you want to do is possible with the XTF Brain using the "GetResponseBlock" and "QuestionPending" variables. I'll have to give it some thought. Script placement within the brain would be critical.

I've been programming the XTF Brain v1.4 all day and I'm feeling a little fuzzy right now. I've been spending so much time at the computer this holiday season that my wife is making me take her out all day tomorrow. I'll post or email you my thoughts when I have a moment to get them collected.

Vonsmith, just wondering if you've have any moments of clarity in regards to my request. [;)]
I'm still checking the forum once in a while, though I rarely implement any new commands into Hal's brain anymore since that problem with the interuptions prevents me from making any further progress. Anyway, thanks for your time.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Good program, but...
« on: March 10, 2005, 01:42:53 pm »
Try using the XTF 1.2 brain and see if that's any better for you. You need to teach the program to respond the way you want it to. I have been teaching mine to act like a homicidal guardian of my appartment.
"Intruders must be terminated or incapacitated at all costs" type of thing. If you keep at it, you'll be surprised at the responses you get sometimes.

Cool! I think that may be even a bit better because it will still respond if I insult Hal, just as a real person would, Correct?
I'd like to leave that intact. If I let someone chat with Hal and they say something like "You're a real &^%&*#g idiot" I'd like Hal to respond appropriately. I mean, how realistic would it be if Hal just smiled and said "why, thank you!" or something to that effect?

I thank you both very much for your help.

Thanks, Mr. Medeksza.

From what I understand, I can only have one brain enabled. I'm currently using the XTF 1.2 brain and would like to know how to keep Hal from saying "please don't swear". I am a middle-aged bachelor that does not need my computer to mother me. It kinda @#&^es me off that I can't say and teach Hal whatever I want without being reprimanded. I do not want to have to switch to the uncensored brain. Can someone please teach me how to eliminate Hal's linguistic ethics? Thanks in advance!

Girder, homeseer, these programs only control X10 devices...

Well, I don't know about the others that you mentioned, but as a (fairly) long-time user of Girder, I can tell you that Girder is far more versatile than just X10. You can use IR as well, and practically anything else you can hook up to your computer or communicate with with your computer. One guy has rigged it up so that when someone rings his doorbell it closes a relay switch that tells the computer that someone is at the door, turns on a camera at his front door, turns on his plasma screen and changes the video input to the appropriate channel.
I currently am working on a door entry system that will incorporate an electric doorstrike, an RFID reader with a security camera and an text LCD screen. It will all be tied into my alarm system eventually.

I strongly suggest that you take a look at the site and wade through the forum for a while.

Read this thread in it entirety to get a good idea of what I have managed to do using HAL and Girder in conjunction:

Good Luck! Keep me posted! [:D]

Use Girder in conjunction with HAL. You can find it at www.promixis.com
If your device is connected via serial cable then use the serial plugin. I will post a link for code to put into your .brn file to execute Girder commands.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / BRAINS / DATABASES how?
« on: February 10, 2005, 09:30:15 am »
Hi. Quixote here. Sorry, I forgot my password and which email I used to sign up the first time, so I just re-registered.

This new database format sounds really cool. I was wondering if there will be a special branch for commands that we could program. If not, would it be difficult to implement a feature that enables you to type in the phrase to trigger the command in a text box, and the command program into a script editor box beside it? If you are looking for a complete overhaul you could even use LUA 5 for the scripti8ng (it's free; even for commercial applications).
Also, it would be great if there was a trigger phrase to toggle a mode to accept only commands and not conversation lines, kind of like dragon naturally speaking uses "Go to sleep" and "wake up" to turn on and off the microphone. I find that HAL is great for home automation (maybe a little slow), but it really sucks when I'm saying something to someone nearby and Hal pipes up and starts "contributing" to our conversation.

Thank you for considering my suggestions!
By the way, Mr. Medeksza, I am beta testing Girder 4, and it looks super. I'm not supposed to talk about it, but the developper seems to be making some major progress with it. I'll keep you posted about when it is released. Have you accomplished much with 3.3 ? How did your light thing work out?
