Two hal interfaces at once
« on: July 29, 2007, 05:56:57 pm »
Okay my computer has been a bit messed up
lately after the router meltdown and other reasons,
but now I get two visible hals running at once and at
least 3 haptec consoles. I'm running 6.1 and downloaded
some plugins meant for 6.0. Should I try to fix the problems one
at a time or do a clean reinstall of hal or maybe format the
disk and start over again?

Tedathome, You might try removing Hal from "Startup" Open Hal,go to Startup option.Click the Radio button "I want Hal to start like a normal program from the start menu". Apply it. Close Hal. Then go Start>Run>msconfig> Select the Startup tab, uncheck Ultra Hal Assist. Close with Restart. That should solve one of you instances of Hal running. Then attack any left over Probs.

Hollywood, not my field but sounds good to me.

Ted, you might also uncheck all your plug-ins, see if that makes a difference.
If that straightens it up, turn back on one at a time so you know which ones are trouble and should be left off.

Okay, hal is not on startup, but I think that
unchecking all plugins is probably the best place
for me to start. I'm not at home this week till
Friday so will at least be able to think about suggestions
till then. I want to remove some of the stuff on the front
page on 6.1, but don't remember what belongs there and on
characters pages. Have tryed too much stuff to soon. Since
the plugins didn't come with uninstallers, I'll have to
open the original zips. Will run ms config first, now that I
have had a few minits to think about it. Computer running poorly
also is frustrating but I think they are unrelated symptoms.
Thanks for suggestions Hollywood and Dusky.

I'm back home and unpluged everything and hal is "normal"
again. I can't get online anymore except on wife's computer
so can't watch videos or do much else on her's. Limeted time
so I'm backing up everything and calling in the pro's.

tedathome,
Myself and a few other people ran into the same problem, it seems to come from the vrHaptek plugin which can change the startup jpg for the character.  If your using this plugin it is probably the cause of your problem, unfortunate because i really like the plugin.

Thank you Carl 2. I'm back online and I miss
some of those plugins including that one.
Some I now realize weren't meant for 6.1
Will start pluging in one at a time now and
seeing what works by process of elimination
using all possible variables.
