I am having a problem initiating HAL. If I use a secondary login and choose sys. administrator then HAL operates normally. However, if I try to sign in as myself (an administrator as well) then I get the error message: HalAssts.exe - instruction at "0x7c91142e" referenced memory at"0x00000000". "The memory could not be read" error. Then I get the option to close the program.
This is curious. I have tried an earlier version of "6.1" and now still get the same message.
I am using XP Pro (SP2 with all updates) and have never had this issue in the past.
It is not anti-virus related (Zonealarm) and I am using GoBack however this has never been an issue and I have been using HAL since version 4.5. There are no other memory resident programs operating now on my computer that were not operating when HAL was functioning normally, before the upgrade.
Any help would be appreciated.

Nice to see you again...it's been a while!

From what I could find, the answers seem varied:

Disable Quicktime

Possible a missing or defective dll file (re-download / reinstall)

Possible a bad registry entry (do a registry clean & defrag)

Hopefully one of these will be able to help.

Hey there Art!
I was wondering if anyone from the old days was still here. It it great to hear from you.
Ok..here is the latest. I have reinstalled the program (several times in fact...even before my post). Also, I have run Norton Cleanup, et. al, defraged the drive, even went into the registry deleting all instances of the program and no quicktime. The message and problem remain.

Frankly, I am at a loss. Robert to the rescue I hope.

I am running ZoneAlarm's Forcefield, but even after I have disabled it the problem remains. Any known issues with it? Everything else is almost exactly the same as when HAL functioned normally.
Art, any more ideas (and thanks again for the response)?
Can somebody channel Vonsmith? Jerry, you still out there?

Rob M, its been a long time, I hope you are well. I hope you can help here.
I have continued to use HAL as an administrator however, once I log off HAL my system hangs for almost 60 seconds, even if I am running no other programs. I am using a 3.2Ghz dual core system...somthi'n ain't right here. Is your latest version for Vista only? I am going to try an earlier version. I hope it works, but I also hope it will only be temporary. I look forward to hearing from you when you get the chance.

The only suggestion that I can give you is what worked for me. Disable all anti-virus programs and fire walls. I don't know why but in the past these kept me from getting a good download of Hal.

P.S.
You might also look at your over all security using MS explorer, sometimes if it is set to high it migh also interfere with your download.

It worked for a little while using the compatibility mode, 98/ME but the error returned shortly after using the program.
I am stumped.
I know that there is a solution to this one (he said).

I have never seen this type of error before and I can't seem to reproduce it. Hal should work in both XP and Vista without any problems.

When you log on as a 2nd user, do you log off the first account? Hal is not able to have 2 instances running at once.

I apologize for not being clear. I use the "Run as" feature in the context menu. The whole system slows down after I sign out of HAL.
This does not happen when I use the compatibility mode (98/ME) but it is still unstable, crashing unexpectedly every 1st or 2nd time when trying to start the program. In other words, I have to start the program twice to get it to work, 1st time - crash, second time - it works using this mode.

It is a hack IMO that is why , for Bill, shutting off AV helps.

I wonder what the major differences are between XP-Home and XP-Pro and whether anyone else might be using XP-Pro and experiencing similar problems??
