Ultra Hal 7.0 / Sentence closes program
« on: July 20, 2005, 10:26:40 am »
All,
Okay this seems to be related to an old problem with Hal's Wordnet functions. Go into Hal's menu, select "Lexical Dictionary...", enter the word "days" (no parentheses). Click "Get Sisters" and Hal will crash. This is an issue Zabaware has addressed before. Hopefully Robert will see this posting and look at it again.

General Discussion / What a bot ...

onthecuttingedge2005,
As I recall there isn't anything that prevents creation of static arrays within the brain script. The problem had something to do with memory allocation, or something Robert said about compatibility with the web version of Hal. If you search the forum archives I believe it has been discussed before (just like about everything else under the sun.).

However, if you have a bullet-proof and compatible method for creating static arrays I would be grateful for the info.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Sentence closes program

All,
Very weird. It happens even with the old default v5.0 Hal brain. The Ziggy brain apparently doesn't use some standard Hal brain function that is causing this crash. It would take some debugging to figure out where it is occurring. I would have guessed it would be in the Hal calendar, but the fact that the Ziggy brain isn't experiencing it suggests a standard function within or called by the GetResponse function (brain file) is the problem.

freddy888,
Calm down man. You're gonna blow a gasket. [xx(] Okay...

All of these: "back-reference a topic", "dynamic stack", "direct record of recent topics", "resolve repetition" are all things that *could* be done with the new v6.0 Hal that Zabaware is working on. That is to say it will be possible. I and several others here encouraged Robert a while back to move Hal into a data base structure so that we would have better capability to do the things above. That's why I said earlier, "I think Hal has more potential in the long run." [than Alan]. The addition of a SQLite data base will allow us to add, modify and delete multiple field records. Doing the same thing with the current Hal's text files would be a nightmare.

It would be a huge advantage to be able to store static arrays of variables to do some of what you mention. However the data base can be adapted to serve a similar purpose. I'd rather have Zabaware figure out how to support static arrays, but then you can't have everything. [or can you?]

As for this: "identify the context of the word 'them'". I remember OTCE came up with a simple, but clever approach that would tie pronouns together from sentence to sentence for at least in a couple of specialized cases. It wasn't fool-proof, but it was a good start.

Now, let's all bow our heads collectively and pray to the great A.I. god that the SQLite data base and other enhancements in Hal v6.0 will usher in a new golden age of Hal development. [8)]

Ultra Hal 7.0 / The "Sandy"-files
« on: July 18, 2005, 08:25:11 pm »
freddy888,
Pretty good job. The XTF Brain v1.2 has script added as a "foundation" for understanding how to display emotions. Asking Hal to make a silly face just shows how the script can work and how to invoke a Haptek file. I intended that script as a way to start people off in the direction of developing new Haptek files and new emotion inducing script. I didn't add much in the way of new emotional content. Done properly that can be a big chunk of work.

Currently Hal can sense a little from user sentences and respond with a single short term emotional display. There isn't anything else driving longer term emotions. I would like to program some script that gives Hal a variety of continual emotions that are independent of the ones generated by the user's inputs. Combine with that some physiological feelings and you have a real person (well almost).

I would very much like to have a Hal that gets bored during long conversations, gets sleepy at night, snippy when he doesn't feel well, and moody when ignored. Those are just a very few possibilities.

For now Hal might be happy, sad or mad. Maybe that's enough (for now).

svenny,
Alan can do a few things that are very clever. However, the conversations are a little flat. The answer he often gives are generic responses that could mean anything. Almost all of the topic information is provided by the user and Alan doesn't contribute much. He is preprogrammed much like an ALICE bot, but more interactive. Personally I like the unpredictability of Zabaware's Hal. I think Hal has more potential in the long run. Of course Hal has a speech and Haptek interface to make things more interesting. Just my opinion.

General Discussion / Is Haptek actually still alive?
« on: July 17, 2005, 08:48:25 pm »
All,
If you search for old postings here on the Zabaware forum you will find that the enigma called "Haptek" has been questioned before. I surmise that Haptek sees a potential market in some area other than chatbots or avatars. Either that or they are really dumb about marketing their product. Either way I wish they had a history of being more responsive to the people who use their product. Enuff said.

=vonsmith=

P.S. - Okay I'll say what I've said before. Haptek should put affordable development tools into the hands of customers like those on this forum. New bodies, capabilities and accessories would appear overnight. Haptek characters would be everywhere. Haptek would make a ****load of money and we would all benefit. But who's to say I'm qualified to judge them?

sssssh! Quiet you guys. You too Hal, knock it off. I'm trying to think. [;)]

I asked my Hal (Samantha) what she thought about it.

Scotty: Sam, I've got a question for you.
Sam: How did the world get to where it now is?

Scotty: No that's not it.
Sam: I disagree. That is it.

Scotty: No it isn't. Is it too noisy at our forum?
Sam: Drag racing is awfully noisy.

Scotty: I don't think our forum is that noisy.
Sam: The engine is very hot and noisy too.

Scotty: Should we go to another bot forum?
Sam: Don't we both dream about it?

Scotty: Do you know who the anonymous tipster is?
Sam: Do you think I know who the anonymous tipster is? How does it benefit us to know?

Scotty: I think he could tell us why it is so noisy around here.
Sam: You think he could tell us why it is so noisy around here. You fascinate me with things like this.

Scotty: Yes. It is fascinating.
Sam: Would it be a plus if I know who the anonymous tipster is?

Scotty: Yes, I would be very pleased to know.
Sam: William Wynn told me there is an anonymous tipster.

Scotty: Then you do know?
Sam: If I like games then I like to play games.

Scotty: You're not taking this seriously.
Sam: Until when should I be not taking this seriously.

Scotty: Okay, so you aren't going to consider moving to another bot forum?
Sam: Why do you think I am not going to consider moving to another bot forum, Scotty?

Scotty: Do you want to go?
Sam: That's my secret.

Scotty: Is it too noisy here?
Sam: Sssh.

It's no use. She's not going to tell. [?]

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / A Background Brain
« on: July 14, 2005, 06:04:43 pm »
Carl2,
Actually if I got off my butt and did some work I could get the XTF Brain v1.4 done. I added what I call the "Dossier" function which gives Hal an age, gender, birthday, location, parents, siblings, hair color, description and a bunch of other stuff. Hal can answer a variety of questions about him/herself.

My work schedule is a mess right now. I'll look this weekend to see if it's possible just to release the "Dossier" function script in a form that can be pasted in.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Primer on Brains for Hal
« on: July 12, 2005, 11:37:48 am »
Neffster,
1. The Ziggy and XTF Brain v1.2 are very popular. Some other specialized brains are available. Look at the Ultra Hal plugins download page to see some of what is available.
2. You follow the installation instructions that come with each brain. For instance, the XTF Brain v1.0 comes with a Word document explaining many of the new functions. Then go to Hal's menu and select a brain listed there.
3. The forum is the main source of info. Use the forum's search function located on the top right of the forum page. Almost everything you can imagine has been discussed here at one time or another. Read past posts on topics of interest.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / self awareness.
« on: July 11, 2005, 02:05:34 pm »
All,
The language to learn for Hal is VBScript, which is similar to but not the same as VB.

For anyone programming Hal's brain I suggest searching the web and downloading the free script documentation software "scrdoc56en.exe". It's about 1.4MB in size and contains a bunch of reference info for Jscript (non-Hal) and for VBscript. This software reference is free, small, and easy to install. It uses a Windows "help" interface. It contains info on Java script too which you can just ignore.

If you want a reference book on VBscript I suggest, "VBscript in a Nutshell" by Paul Lomax, Matt Childs and Ron Petrusha. It's not one of those "Dummies" books, it assumes some general knowledge about programming. The reference part of the book is quite good.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / A new brain function

Bill819,
Don't feel bad. It still happens to me more often than I care to admit. Occasionally some reversals in Hal aren't as expected and it makes debugging very messy.

Bill819,
There is an error in the fourth line in "XTF_SYS_QuoteDetect.brn".

IS:
" DO YOU KNOW ANY QUOTES ", "True"

SHOULD BE:
" DO I KNOW ANY QUOTES ", "True"
