Thoughts and ideas on new plugins.
« on: March 09, 2008, 07:59:44 pm »
Excuse my ignorance on the subject, I'm only a few days new to Hal,
and so the limitations are still unknown to me.

I've noticed that a lot of people here are very skilled with developing new plugins, so I thought i'd share a few ideas i've had on potential ideas.

Firstly I really like the idea of the lonliness plugin, it's nice to have Hal initiate contact with you - however i've found that when hal initiates contact, that the voice is not activated, just a text prompt - Is this normal? if so, it would be much better for Hal to propmt conversation verbally.

Also, anyone here know if it is possible to write a plugin that would
create a random time delay between you talking to Hal and him/her
replying? There seems something unnatural about a virtually imediate response... a random few second delay (which was different each time)
would make the interaction seem a lot more "human"

With the above idea in mind, perhaps you could advance this a little, and have Hal occasionally not offer a direct response immediatly, but instead say something along the lines of "Oh, you caught me daydreaming... um let me think about that for a a second"... (or anything similar from a pool of possible "delay/distraction" responses.
then with a brief pause, allow for the normal response to whatever you said.

Perhaps these ideas have been thought of and solved already, if so does anyone have copies of these plugins?
If not, anyone have the knowledge or skill to develop them?

It is possible to do what you ask but the auto idle doesn't work on my machine, so I can't develop a plugin along those lines until the problem has been resolved by Robert.

It would appear that your auto-idle might be working.

Which TTS voice were you using at the time?
If you experienced no verbal sound you might try running the HapSapiSetup program then try Hal again.

Sorry,

The auto-idle and lonliness plugin are pretty much
one in the same, in that the plugin allows Hal to
initiate conversation from time to time.

There was a glitch that could be fixed by using the
HapSapSetup program as I described above.

Give it a try then run Hal again, select the TTS
voice and see if it works.

You have to start the initial conversation, then,
if the lonliness or auto-idle plugin is working,
Hal should respond within 1 to 5 minutes or so,
depending on your settings.

Auto-Idle had no "settings" per se, compared to
the lonliness plug, but each would Hal to talk
asking various questions as to your whereabouts.

BTW, Welcome to the forum!!

I have an idea for a plug in that might be useful.  I could really use a plug in that would corect hal's pronounciation on some words.  If there is a way to develope that I would be greatly interested.

Hi lcatmc

You can't change the pronounciation of words through a plugin, well not that I'm aware of.
I use neospeech Kate voice and it's pronounciation of words can be changed by opening it's 'UserDicEng' file which can be located at 'C:Program Files : NeoSpeech : Kate16 : lib'.
What voice are you using?

hello lcatmc , the british voice changes pronounciation on words . don't know if thats what you mean or what i had talked about earlier having hal emphasise certain words ?? i do use a slang on some words in my angela like " dontcha " instead of don't you . the best way though to use slang words to see if they are going to sound right is to test them in the free cyber buddy download and type it out in the read area and hal will say the sentence out loud then if you like the sounding of it you can copy it from their and paste into hal !![:)][8D]

You can also simply type the word or sentence on a text or hap file and drag and drop on haptar using the voice.

I heard Anna on internet the other day.
I thought cool voice.
Only available on vista however.

You can also use the UltraHal Text-to-Speech program.

For a quick method:
Run > Control Panel > Speech > Text To Speech tab
Type in your text and select Preview sample.

Thanks for the input everybody.  I had just noticed that there are a lot of words that HAL mispronounces and was wondering how to fix that.  I tried the British voice, but sometimes it cuts out.
