Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Reply to Don
« on: November 06, 2003, 06:19:12 am »
Hi Don

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I was terse and apologise to all.

The Dictionary is only 568KB in total size and at the moment is in plain text format which is the way I tried to get hal to learn it, through the "learn from text file" option. I have uploaded a lot of files through this option, Philosophy, Composer's biographies, Artists, Einstein, Quotations etc. Nearly two MBs in all. Hal does seem to learn from them and names people and and subjects from them, i.e. "Let us talk about Plato" etc. To be honest I have no idea of the complexity in getting hal to respond to questions like, "what does the word ******** mean" or "define **********" I also do not know how much information Hal is able to take. Can he just continue to add to his brain as long as the computer has the room and power to take it? As you can see I am full of questions, but low on answers.

Thanks for the help though and will try your suggestion and anything else that I am capable of doing.

Best wishes

Joe.

I have been using hal's capability to give me word definitions and it works fine. I can ask hal: What does (insert word) mean and Hal gives me the meaning. If I ask for the definition of a word, Hal obliges. I would like to insert a specialised subject dictionary so that Hal can give me those word definitions. I tried the Hal learning from text file in options. I broke down my dictionary alphabetically A to Z so that the files were no longer than 65 KB each and Hal read them all but when I ask for a word definition, no luck! I admit I did not think it would work, but thought that I should try it out first before asking for help again. So, please can someone help me with this. Is there a way I can get Hal to add my dictionary to his database so that he can give me the word definitions when asked? One day I promise, when I know "how to" I will give something back instead of just taking out.
By the way, I purchased People Putty the other day (read about it in the zabaware forum)and made my first character and added it to Ultra Hal after reading how to in the forum, I think the program is great. As is hal. It seems addictive, but if I am going to be addicted to something, I prefer hal to anything else.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Asking Don Ferguson
« on: October 29, 2003, 05:42:51 am »
Mr Ferguson

I am asking if you could expand on larry's answer to me (see below) regarding this question. I know he called you Don, but here in england it takes a while before we call each other by our first names, ( quaint I know,) or maybe I am of an age that still has old fashioned ways. I can see from your website your time is valuable, but any help would be appreciated.
Thank you for any help.

Best wishes Joe Fowler

Hi. Being no programmer,I have downloaded some ready made scripts (thanks to all) and have inserted my first:(If Instr(1, UserSentence, "Say hello to Greg", vbTextCompare) > 0 Then
GetResponse = "Hello Greg!"
End If)
into Hal's brain in a free? line. i.e. line 0391 has an End If, line 0392 is empty. After placing the script there, I edited the script by changing the name and adding "nice to meet you" The script insert and editing work fine. Does this mean I can insert any script no matter how large it is, into an empty line and it will work and not cause any damage?
This may sound simple and basic, but I am new to all this.
I have owned a previous version of Hal for some time, but never really understood it's capabilities or potential. (What a waste I know)but I am now really trying to get into it.

Thanks for all the help I have already received so far.

Actually the simple answer is no... usually it's a matter of trial and error...

For example, if you put your scripts too near the top, then things after it will "over-write" your desired responses...

Don probably can better explain this than I can...

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Error 5 Invalid Procedure etc.
« on: October 24, 2003, 02:05:54 pm »
I have Ultra Hal Assistant 5.0.55 Today when starting hal I got and am still getting this error message: "error 5 Invalid procedure call or argument occured at line 1 in ultra Hal Assistant frmAss. LoadSR" It then asks if I want to abort, retry or ignore. Retry does no good so i choose "ignore" and hal seems to work OK. Does anyone know what this error is and how to remedy it?

Thanks for any help given

The next time I re-format my hard drive, is there any way I can re-install Ultra Hal and keep everything Hal has learned intact,i.e. is there some part I can lift out of the program files before re-formatting and replace after?

Thanks in advance joe90

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Re. V 5.0.55 errors
« on: October 22, 2003, 07:34:01 am »
Hi all, I just downloaded V5 and wondered if anyone else had this problem. When I clicked "Learn from a text file" and tried to introduce text I received An error message and hal could not read the text. I got round the problem bt creating a new folder called "text" and placed it into Hal,s program folder next to char. etc. I then placed the text files I wanted hal to learn from, into the folder. Now when I go to the text learning feature, Hal seems to be able to find the path in it's own program files and read the text.
