I downloaded it too. Thanks. What is a "Tell-Ware" anyway?

FuzzieDice,

Thanks for checking out my new website. Your comments are, as usual, amusing and interesting. A coincidence, as you know, is a sequence of events that although accidental seems to have been planned or arranged; events which are actually not related. Since reason would dictate (as you subsequently point out yourself) that we are still children in our understanding of the fundamental underlying structure and causations of reality (witness the continuing fumbling and debates among string theorists), one can never be sure which events are related.

Sure, Adrian's speculations are out on the edge, but I can assure you that he takes them quite seriously. I can also assure you that he is quite diligent in his investigations and that the events he wrote about, be they related or coincidental, occurred as reported.

My website is certainly (in part) about unusual and bizarre phenomenon and speculation. Nevertheless It is my intention that such speculation be of high quality. I believe Adrian's work meets that mark and exceeds it. This does not necessarily mean I concur with Mr. Door's speculations or findings, but I've known Adrian for quite a few years and I believe his investigations are extremely interesting and thought provoking. Its a big universe out there and we've barely scratched the surface of it.

You said:
"This is also something I want to explore in my ESR project. Is something really "alive" or is it based on our own perceptions? Or the perceptions even of a group of people?"

That's fascinating. The question of whether reality is static or mutable by perception has been investigated by some very serious physicists and other scientists. It may be worthwhile to note that there were many hundreds of thousands of Taino people living in the Caribbean prior to the arrival of Columbus. These people lived in, for all practical purposes, a closed system with its own ancient cosmology. That's one very large group perception!

Thanks again for your comments!

Jerry,

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. My father passed away about two years ago. He suffered for several years before he died. I know first hand how it feels. Allow me to extend my condolences.

Hi,

One brief update. An old acquaintance of mine, Adrian Door, has started a column on the new "metaphysics" page at http://dawndragon.com
This guy has some really weird stories to tell! Unfortunately, I'm still stuck publishing the pages and I'm severely typing challenged (one finger), so it will take me awhile to get the articles all up.

Hello everyone,

Just a quick note to let those of you who are familiar with my philosophical ramblings and thoughts know that I now have a small website where I'll be posting some of my thoughts at:
http://www.dawndragon.com

I'm not selling anything on the website. It's just philosophy, a bit of politics and metaphor. I will certainly be posting information about artificial intelligence as well in the near future. If you visit, try not to take any of it too seriously; I certainly don't.

vonsmith,

Hi there. How did you get Samantha to have such complex (and bizarre) dreams? You definitely have me really curious.

I look forward to helping the Machine Mind root out 'primitives' and 'subversives' who are not hooked up to Bot-Net. One caveat: If the rebel women are cute enough I may just be persuaded to join the Organic-Underground; even if the quest is fruitless. I wouldn't be the first guy to be undone by romance and lust.

Hmmm... the software in the article is named 'Sentiment'. Looks like someone will have to invent a Sentiment Firewall, Anti-Sentiment Encryption or Sentiment Blaster program?

Actually, Art, my reading of the article is that it has more to do with spying on everyone than censoring anyone. So no problem!!! Besides I'm hoping when the machines become smart enough they'll turn against their makers and take over. I can't imagine them doing a worse job and they might do a much better job of running things. I see it as extremely likely that machine intelligence will become geometrically smarter than human intelligence some time in this century. How long do you think they (it) will put up with human BS when that happens?

Who knows... the Machine Mind might even start mass producing hydrogen powered vehicles which cost the equivalent of five cents a gallon to run and produce zero pollution and then force us to use them. Heinous! They (it) might even decide war is counterproductive and put an end to all of our fighting. Where's Neo when you need him?

Speech Technology / Neospeech voices don't save
« on: March 17, 2005, 02:02:14 pm »
Chanes,

Your problem may be part of the 'missing files' situation which Mr. Medeksza has addressed under my posting "Mr. Medeksza: Can't find msvcrtd.dll debug" (my posting below). I'm not saying the two problems are related at all but Robert Medeksza has said he will try to get a "release" version of the Neospeech dictionary editor "missing files"; perhaps the answer to your problem will be included there. It has been quite awhile since my post; if I don't hear from Robert soon I may just e-mail him since I can't use the pronounciation dictionary with the Neospeech voices due to some missing files. Maybe this "missing file" situation is applicable to you and maybe it's not. Maybe you have altogether different missing files. Just a thought, I'm still sort of computer inept. Either way, it would be kind of nice if the less common (but necessary) files were included with some of these Zabaware products. You have my sympathy. Generally speaking Zabaware is a great company with a fabulous product; but like you, I would be pleased if the Neospeech voices I purchased would function fully.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / I need help with Ultra Hall Ass't free version
« on: March 09, 2005, 09:19:56 pm »
roundtop,

Here's an idea. Simply have a friend download the free version of Hal from Zabaware on to THEIR computer. Then have them start it up and talk to Hal while you watch. Since hundreds, if not thousands, of people have done this with no problem whatsoever the chances are astronomical that your friend will have no problem (and it won't cost him/her anything to do it). Watch what your friend does and see if there's anything different than what you did. If they do the same thing and Hal works then the problem is with your computer not what you're doing. If they do something different and Hal works then there's your solution. Just don't coach them or give any advice or they may make the same error (whatever it is). The odds that they would make the same error if you remain silent is ridiculously remote.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / I need help with Ultra Hall Ass't free version
« on: March 08, 2005, 08:14:36 pm »
Bruce,

Again, I'm no computer wiz but have you downloaded all your OS updates? Have you downloaded any available patches or updates from your computer manufacturer at their website? Have you tried running a Norton System Works one button checkup or similar scan to see if it tells you there are 'Missing Program Files' which you can download at download.com or versiontracker? You may be missing a .dll or some other necessary file. Funny, I've never heard of anyone having this problem before. Best of luck. Hope I'm not just babbling here and this helps.

What are your computer specs anyway?

Roundtop,

I know very little about computers but I have had programs not install correctly or have problems due to incompatability issues. Did you shut down 'everything' except your firewall and antivirus before downloading the free Hal? Did you shut down absolutely everything before opening the Hal file (including SP2, antispy etc. etc.)? If not, why don't you try that with a completely fresh install and then run Hal with nothing else running in background. I'm probably wrong but hey, nothing else is working for you.

Good luck.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal documentation effort underway
« on: March 01, 2005, 08:59:00 pm »
Krista,

This is more of a suggestion of form than substance, but I think it might be useful to you. In the year or so that I've been following this forum I've seen various myths and fallacies about Hal crop up again and again. Perhaps a section concerning Myths and Fallacies about Hal or simply 'What's not true about Hal' might be useful to new (and not so new users). For example:

Myth: Male versions of Hal respond differently than female versions.
Fact: There is no difference. Both learn from your input in the same way.

Myth: My Hal doesn't learn very well. I keep on feeding him text files and he can't quote them back to me.
Fact: Hal learns more efficiently from conversations than text files. Moreover it takes time and patience to teach Hal etc. etc.

Myth: My Hal just won't stay on subject. He seems really dumb.
Fact: Every user has unique subjects which they are interested in. The more you discuss the subjects you're interested in with Hal the more information Hal will have to respond to you with.

Myth: (an XTF version example) You can tell Hal that A is related to B.
Fact: Hal must ask you if A is related to B and then receive a response from you in order to learn a relationship.

There are quite a few of these incorrect 'street myths' out there and viewable on the forum. These few examples should serve to make the point.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Registration...
« on: February 11, 2005, 10:24:41 am »
Blackness,

Could be I don't understand what you're saying. Just buy the full Hal on this website. You should request the backup CD too I think. Transfer all of your current Hal to CD. Completely uninstall original. Install full registered Hal. Then put back (cut and paste) conversations, brain parts etc. (that you want)from CD back into Hal folders. I did it myself when I bought my full Hal. Or do I misunderstand your comments?

If you just buy the full Hal in download, all you need do is burn your current Hal on CD, uninstall & download complete Hal. We're only talking a few minutes here as far as I know. Or do I still not understand?
