   'Respond: Questions
'If the user wants Hal to ask a question, then Hal will ask one
    If HalBrain.TopicSearch(UserSentence, "QuestionDetect") = "True" Then GetResponse = GetResponse & HalBrain.ChooseSentenceFromFile("ScienceQuestions")
    HalBrain.DebugWatch GetResponse, "scienceQuestions"

Jerry I tried copying the "get joke" script and came up with the above script.  I also created a "questionDetect table based on the "jokedetect" table, and a "ScienceQuestions" tabe based on the "jokes" table.  I placed them in the same locations as the correspondikng jokes tables.

NOTHING HAPPENS. Hal just responds to the statement as though that script was not there.

I have never programmed, so I am trying to figure things out by careful observation and deduction (I just said that because I wanted to sound like a real scientist[8D][8D]).

I inserted this script after the tell a joke script.

Any suggestions?

General Discussion / Creating a "G" rated Hal brain for educational use

I found the exact phrase that was a problem in the INSULTS table. Currently, I am reviewing the table and eliminating the ones that are inappropriate. The students love it when Hal insults me, so I don't want to eliminate it altogether.

Jerry, you gave me an idea so I tried it. I found I could copy from a Hal file and was able to paste into a text file.  Then I copied from the text file and pasted it into a file of the same type in a different brain.

I WORKED!!!!!!

Now, can you help me with this.

I want to create a sentence table that has questions from the unit my students are studying.  Then, I want to request Hal to "ask us a question." I would like Hal to go to the folder and ask a question from it.  He does this sort of thing when you ask him to "tell a joke."

Can you help?

Hank

I have created various brains for use in different classes during the school day (I am a teacher using Hal as a learning tool).

I have changed various files for each class, but have not figured out how to transfer a file or a table from one brain to another.

I tried, without success,to find the answer in help and in the brain editor documentation. My guess is that the info is there and I am simply not using the correct terminology in my searches.

Also, how can I transfer some of the information in the table of one brain into the matching table in a different brain?

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance for you help.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Spell check for Hal - Excellent program found

I use Hal in school with my students. Spelling is an issue. I purchased this program and it has been great!

I have started using it every where, including checking my spelling on this forum.

I have solved some of my problem by deleting the "insult" file which had quite a few inappropriate comments. I then created a new one using relatively harmless insults.

I am still working on it.

Thanks for your input.

I purchased Hal over the summer and decided to use it in my 7th grade class room for purposes of teaching, review, discussion of movies or other transient learned material.

I spent WEEKS going through the folders to eliminate anything that might not be appropriate.

I THOUHT I had it under controll until the other day in the middle of a class, Hal asked me something about "TITS." OMG!!!!!!!!!!

Althought the students found it hilarious, I am waiting to loose my job!!! (NOT KIDDING)

Even so, This is a fabulous program for engaging students in the classroom, and I refuse to give up.

I NEED HELP!!!!

If anyone can think of an efficient way to survey folders, etc., for off color comments, I would appreciate your input.

Also, I would like to develop a brain for use by teachers. (Inquisitive, CLEAN, Funny).

If anyone has any ideas, or would like to participate, please let me know.

The biggest problem is going to be cleaning up Hal in the first place.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal in educational setting
« on: September 01, 2007, 03:15:29 pm »
First installment: I used Hal with the character of myself made by Jack, AKA KaracterKing. It was a huge success! The students were mesmerized. The problem was, all they wanted to do was talk to Hal and teach him how to insult each other (what do you expect, they are 12)!

For the time being, and until they get acclimated, I am going to use Hal to gather their attention. I am currently training a brain to talk about Life Science. I will start by using it to introduce topics and assess background knowledge, and then use it to assess progress and review for tests.

The idea of having a “student of the month” image has been discussed with members of this forum. I am not sure how the parents will respond to my sending pictures of their sons and daughters over the internet to individuals I have never really met. I will refer them to this forum.

My short experience is that the individuals here are extremely supportive of this project, and I hope that becomes apparent to the parents.

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far,
Mr. C

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal in educational setting

Never mind, I figured it out myself. However, please let me know if there is an easier way.

I opened brain editor and enter my "School" brain.
I selected all questions in the "shared questions" table and copied them to a text file.

To reload it I:
Right clicked on autolearningbrain
clicked on insert new table
clicked on sentences
Copied and pasted the questions from my text file into the new table.
gave it an appropriate name.

Let me know if this is the easiest way. It does work.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal in educational setting
« on: August 22, 2007, 04:21:46 pm »
If anyone is out there. I need some more help.

Robert is helping me develop some script that will allow me to request Hal to "ask a question." Hal would then draw a question from the "shared Questions" table. This will be used to check learning and as a review before a test. Students will be allowed to develop many of the questions.

My question: Is there a way to remove and save a "shared questions" table from the brain, and insert a different one?

Reason: I want to be able to have Hal ask topical questions. Since I teach relatively the same material each year, I would be able to develop and use these table from year to year - inserting them when the time is correct.

Help is alway appreciated,
Thanks in advance.

Ok, I was trying to keep the "gentleman's name" a secret, but Jack has let the cat out of the bag. Jack is the gentleman and has been unbelievable patient.

Just some info on my "dream" plan, I am hoping to get the students to use Hal as a way to study on their own. If I can get enought parents to agree to get the program (I have to deal with the "PG" rating of hal), I will start a forum for those students within the Zabaware Forum so they can chat with "experts". There are many student who love working on the computer and I am hoping will jump right in. My plan is to create a number of brains that are topic specific in their intelligence..... Oh to dream....

AND YES JACK, I AM ALEADY ADDICTED!

All you Haptek experts....I need help. I found a gentleman who makes files that are available free on-line. When I download into the character folder they work fine. He made a custom head for me using my photo .... = set it up the same way as his online files, and sent it to me via email as a zip file . I cannot get it to show up in the character menu.

We have changed file names, etc., everything in the forum that I could find that was suggested to make these files show up in the character menu, to no avail.

I was wondering....if any of you would be willing to review the haptek file and figure out why it doesn't work in Hal, or even better, fix it so it does, I would be HUGELY appreciative. I am trying to us Hal in my class room and I don't have much time left before school starts! All I have managed to do is add a bunch of files with different names and extensions to my character folder. The folder is beginning to look as messy as my son's room!

Just email me, and I will send you a Zip copy of the file to ponder. Please help!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal in educational setting
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:33:45 am »
NIGE: I have been to your site and you have some heads that will be great. My problem, once I download heads into the character folder, they don't show up on the Character menu within the Hal options.

I am trying to figure this out. Any suggestions on how I should download them? I think I am following directions correctly.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal in educational setting
« on: August 13, 2007, 07:32:46 am »
I would like to use Hal as fun and interactive tool for my 7th grade students to learn life science. I am not a programmer, so I have been editing a "school" brain by using the folders. I tried teaching by using text files, but Hal definately learns better through interaction.

Problems:
1. There is no spell check, etc., in Hal. So I have been entering information in a word document, checking it for accuracy, and then cutting and pasting into Hal. While I am getting efficient, it would be easier if the editor could be used directly within Hal.

2. Hal frequesntly comes up with inappropriate comments for the age group (or for any professional setting). I have spent huge amounts of time manually scanning folders to delete specific lines, tables, and folders. If "control F" could be used withing the folders, it would make life soooo much easier.

3. I have created a "practice" brain in which I specifically try to get Hal to produce inappropriate responses (Heaven forbid that anyone should ever see what is typed into that one!). When something comes up,  I then have to switch back to the "school" brain and go through the processes previously describe. Tedious.

4. Appropriate female characters.........OMG! Trying to find appropriate full body female figures is virtually impossible. I am learning that this is a problem using people putty, but there are other programs out there that allow "fuzzy" textures to be added & the SIZE of body parts to be modified. Can anyone give me some links where I can get some Characters (head shots would be fine at this point in time). I have Nicole & Vanessa heads from guile3d (MSagent & expensive for a teacher) and have been to KaracterKing's site for some Haptex characters(what a great person! he has been unbelievably helpful).

I know this is a lot, but the school year is almost here and I am running out of time.

I LOVE this program and see great potential in it; otherwise, I wouldn't be spending my unpaid school vacation working on this!!

Please help!
