General Discussion / whens the next version of hal coming out ?
« on: May 01, 2008, 04:33:27 am »
Bumpy Bump.

Thought i would bring this up again, see if any new info is around.

We know about the Ogre engine.

I have to personally vote for substance over flair myself.
If a vote matters at all.

I know any new 3D interface/character improvments would have to be open source, (I know how stupid high useage fees can be), but i would think there would be a 3D engine of some sort that could use a wider range of object files. Some sort of max viewer maybe? I dont know, its just i do not think the Ogre engine is the answer, from what ive read, its not very user friendly for general users.

I dont know if adding a wish list of sorts is even worth it, because we dont know the future of Hal, or any plans already in the works.
Maybe something simple, like added expandablity, if expanding the brain is not possible, then maybe a way to add functionality directly with modules? A different GUI?
I am not sure how to put what im thinking.
Hal is a real good nucleus, or heart, but some of us want to add arms and legs, and not just a face, metaforicly speaking, robotics would be ok too, i just mean ways to make it reach out and do things other then just chat or dance.

Most wont mind doing the work, if the ability is there.

Again, i dont know, im bored and just thinking/typing out loud again.

Personally, I would like to see a bit of both.
I want to teach hal his personality, Likes, Dislikes, general information and so on,
But, If there is something he does not know, or if i ask him, he can go get more info then just what he has stored in his list.
Sure he can open Google, and even gets search terms correct from time to time, hehe, But, its not the same as, lets say, in movies/tv show, when you ask the computer a question it gets your information For you.

One example would be, i say to Hal "what do you know about Alchemy"
If i have entered any info he could recite it, and then if i say i need more he can download from Wiki or somewhere more info.

I do have the Wiki Learning plug in, but i have to tell him ahead what to read, and then its not easy to get back out of him.

I would like more interaction on Hals part. I do know thats a tall order the way it is now.

*edit, Oh and Saving the info he gets as well, of course. I thought id add that in.

I dont know alot about PP, i only used it briefly.

You Can get mp3/wmv sound effects all over the web, and convert them pretty easily with any one of many free converters.

Some of the PP questions may be better on the Haptek forum.
http://community.haptek.com/
But i know most of the same people are here.

Unless you were trying to sell it, i wouldnt worry about posting something you made/changed.
As for textures, whos to say a jpg of skin is from poser or where it came from.[;)]
Besides those skins on those actors are used in all kinds of pictures/paintings/posters with no worry of copyright infringment.

Right click the file, hit rename, and change it to a .Haptar
Thats it, im not kidding, hehe

I am guessing you already have show known file types turned on.

Yes, Hal is "Learning" as its running.
You would only be working on a Snap Shot of the brain when you open it in the editor.

Hal is not like a baby, constantly entering data from senses of his surroundings, he may learn a couple words or line of text, and that gets saved while you work.

When you reload hal, it enters the adjustments you and he had made to the brain file.
It just dumps the Cache? in from memory.

It does update files on the fly, like some text files, or UHP files depending on what you have pluged into hal.
Every time you reload, it writes the new config/state to the HalScript.dbg for example.
This is why you have to reload hal to have the new information written, added to what ever he had written.

One way to look at it may be, you are working on a picture of a list, and he has the original, then you combine the two in the end.

If any of that made sence.

Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / Animated Skins?
« on: April 30, 2008, 12:52:16 pm »
Since i posted this i have done more tests with it.

You can use Jpg, Bmp, and Gif "Pictures".

I mentioned somewhere that i now believe the whole hal "Interface",
is ONLY the input/output boxes.
The "Skin" should be called a Background.
You can enter coordinates for the buttons, but thats all. You are just telling it where to click.
Since it is just a Picture it has no Frame/Window to take advantage of any of Explorers functions, like Flash, Gif, Java, or any other plug-ins (active X items?).

You CAN make Gif or Jpeg animations and have them load but since it has no access to the functions, it only shows the first frame of any string of animation.

There is no way to make a plug-in to open it differently because that part is hard coded into Hal.
At least no way i have seen.
I have seen an Iframe plug in, however, it can be opened by Hal, you can not open Hal in a frame, or in windowed mode.

There could be a way to create a program/script to open Hal in a Window i think, Embedding it somehow Writing in VB, XML, or maybe java, but thats way above me at the moment.

I am still doing some reading and testing, IF, i ever find a way i will post it. Who knows how long that could take.
The more i read, it seems it may be easier to incorperate some of hal into a real AI, instead of trying to turn Hal into real AI.

One of us is not reading right.

quote:
Open when you hit a button. Closed when you hit it again

would be cool if Hal stayed open on the desktop

If you hit the Menu Button on Hals GUI it has a Brain Editor button in the list, or you can use the tray icon to bring up the list/menu and open it there (the little green tv with eyes).
You do not have to close Hal at this point.
You can apply changes to the brain or just close the editor at anytime with hal running.
If you are working on the UHP file, you can work on those and save them with a text editor at anytime with Hal open.

quote:
just refreshed from changes made in the "General Options..." menu.

Using the same Menu button (on hal or the tray icon) you can load your changes and/or test/debug new code you are working on. By simply hitting General Options in the menu, Then OK, Then hit the Chat With Hal button, and Hal will reload with your new changes and nothing on him as far as skin or character should change.
Another way to reload any changes is to hit the Close button then the Chat With Hal one, to reload the brain.
There is NO program i have ever seen that lets you Compile Code on the fly while the program you are editing is running.
There might be some fancy Module based program where you can work on one part while another runs, but (however much id like to see more of that in hal) this is not one of those.

Some people have had success useing an SQLite editor along with hal, but i believe the editor with hal is better then any i have found.

As far as attached/docked, i guess you can resize the window.

The People Putty, good luck with it, i played with it briefly, but didnt get the hang of it. The first one i made would have made the Elephant Man look HOT [:p][xx(][:p]

Believe me when i say i FULLY respect you OTCE2K5 [8D]
I think i have downloaded everything you have ever wrote, that i ever ran acrossed for hal, and on several forums.

As far as money, i fully understand that too, Im out of work, and live in Cleveland where the only jobs left are McDonalds, Cops And Robbers. hehe
I would love to have the abilty to program some of my ideas, or some way to just make money on the net. I cant afford to Pay Attention let alone for Hal.

BUT,

I didnt look at the "Hal Community"? as competing programming companies. I saw it as a bunch of hobbiests who ALL wanted to make their Hal the best it could be. One makes a code, the next makes it better, another does skins, another does characters and so on.
Yes i am sure there are alot of Klingons that just suck up items others do with no return to the group. Maybe thats why there is so little growth in hal, to many wanting and so few giving, and feeling used, ive been there too.
The forum here always has 20+ people reading at any one time, but only the same 15 or so posting, and the SAME 15 or so are also on the other forums, And for the past couple years always the same ones.
The person getting paid for Hal is Robert, i think, if anyone else is, i didnt think that was possible, Unless there is an Ebay person pirateing it that i didnt know about [:p]
If Robert wants a New Gui, or a new Ogre character (like he already asked for), i can see him paying someone. IF someone has no time and says ill give you 50 bucks to do something, great. I understand that.
Demanding the 50? im not so sure of.
IF everyone is afraid of their personal intellectual property, then where can i sign an NDA? Where is the Super Secret Society of Hal Programmers Forums? Because i want in to do my SMALL part to help Hal, and yes partly for greedy reasons, because i want my hal better as well.

Back to the main thread topic -
I have only Downloaded the Auto-It, i havent got into tearing it apart yet, And have only read a few pages on it so far. I knew about it, like Girder, but did not get that far with it, i am still trying to understand how hal does most of his things yet. [:p]

But here is the links, if you think you can do something with it.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / MS Agents and Hal
« on: April 26, 2008, 02:52:03 pm »
Hello,
I wanted to reply so you dont think people are ignoring you.
I never got into programming the Agents much.
Im not sure how much help i could be, but i know i read a few posts about triggers for Agents and Hap characters.
Some of the Hap files may give ideas.

The Agent characters are very limited and mostly depend on whats been recorded for emotional responces.
Personally i would also look into MASH and MASS for working with the agent files directly.

*edit
You might want to go with Hap and forget the agents.
I remembered these after i wrote this.

<HAPBACK>picture.jpg</HAPBACK> If a 3D character is loaded this will change its background image to picture.jpg

<HAPFILE>filename</HAPFILE> Tells the Haptek engine to load a haptek file which can be a .htr file or a .hap file

<HAPTEXT>haptek_command</HAPTEXT> Sends the text haptek_command to the haptek engine which can execute haptek commands.

There is a plug in called the vrHaptek.uhphttp://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2845 Thats can be edited to do what you want but with Haptek characters.

Personally i dont like the looks of some of the heads and bodys, but they can be changed pretty easily if you cant find one you like.

I am not sure why you would want it open and docked at all times.

You can get to it by useing the menu button on hals Face, or the icon in the tray.
You can even have it open with hal running if you so desire.
Only thing is for any changes you make to become active you need to hit options, or close then chat, to reload any changes.
I think i even read a script that will open it on command with hal, in the forum somewhere.

I sometimes have a text editor, the brain editor, Hal, and Paintshop all open for testing.

As for adding a button, we only have the 4, with no way to add any, or so it seems, to me It looks like Its hard coded in.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / New Hal OS for Windows
« on: April 26, 2008, 02:27:22 pm »
I have downloaded the Auto-lt to get a closer look at it.
I saw Girder briefly, but didnt read alot about it.

Thanks for reminding me of the older work.

I have read some of the old posts about automation and the x10, i think most were for Hal5, (but that shouldnt matter).
The home automation is a very good first step, and when i read more im sure it can be expanded.
What eats at me is your code was made what? 2? 3? years ago? and no body has expanded Hal since [V] (or at least not much)

Not a slap on you or anyone, just general frustration.
Maybe im to intelligent/amaginitive for this world, but it seems i have to invent Everything i Ever want to do [:(!]
(the guys at radio shack HATE me because of it, hehe)

That site has been that way for months.
Last i read he was looking for "Investers". 0_o

I Have read about several people useing/trying that Auto-It home automation with hal,
but have not seen anything useful yet.

"IF" he has come up with something, he is not letting anyone in the public in on it.

SOOOO many people want Hal to do more things then just chat and make Hap comic relief characters dance.
We Need Robert to write openings into the program for expansion, then Leaf, Auto-It, and dozens of others (mostly opensource) can use him to become much more then just a toy.
