Hi

While exploring the child-windows running on my PC, I stumbled across a control which, if activated, causes Hal to spontaneously talk (ie without the need for me to talk to him).

I can write an external program now to randomly trigger this spontaneous speech. However, I am sure you have provided a way to do this from inside hal. Isn't it time you told us how to do it?

Phil

Please share your new found knowledge with the rest of us. A great many of us have been trying to get Hal to speak without input.

I too have a small problem with appointments. I have a friends birthday comming up on 11/19/03 and Hal's last reminder said the birthday was one week away and  nothing since. Normally Hal would keep reminding me right up to the last minute.

Well, the 3D features work just fine. Using NVidia's latest card, one of them anyway. Even went to Haptek and am considering their software, it looks like fun.
Can anyone explain how to use the "MakeTrans" feature, that may do the trick.

I found the transparent feature on my Hal too. Nothing happened, but then again I do not know what to expect to happen. After clicking it does dissapear form the menu

I would recommend that you try to find an old copy of the program called 'Eliza' preferrably written in Basic. Study the coding and then get started rewrighting it using your own replys. This will give you a very basic introduction AI type programming. Then count on spending the next 5 or 10 years trying to improve it. Just as in Chess most programmers wright the basic code then spend years trying to get it to play better chess. I know as I have done that and the process never seems to end.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / not sure where to ask this
« on: November 12, 2003, 02:23:52 pm »
I posted something like this a few days ago. First you must decide on what kind of personality you want your bot to have, ie. friendly, aggressive, or maybe a cowboy like person or maybe a science teacher.
Once you have done that you build your language answers according to the type that you are building. You start with 'hellos' and 'goodbyes'
For a cowboy type you might greeet people with "howdy pardners' and you might end a conversation with "audios amigos". Remember those buckaroos need real specific types of responses, so get back in the saddle and throw your rope around the type of character or personality
you want to create and go for it.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Voice training
« on: November 12, 2003, 12:31:13 am »
I went through a small voice training session on my working laptop. Then I searched the whole Hal directory, then the complete windows directory, but I could not find any new files with that days date on them. If Hal can record several peoples voices then it must create a file for each one. Where is it at?

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Voice training
« on: November 08, 2003, 01:06:53 pm »
I have trained Hal on one of my laptops and I read that it can be trained to recoginize several different speakers as it creates a different file for each one.
My question is what is the name of the file that it creates and where can I find it on my harddrive? I simply would like to copy it to my other laptop so that I won't have to spend several more hours training it to my voice on the other laptop.
Also this morning I clicked on Tranparenty and nothing happened. Now I no longer have the option to turn it off. Any suggestions?
My robot is getting near completion and I awaiting its first actions as a thinking, talking bot thanks to Hal.
As ususal, thanks

Any help would be welcomed by me.
Thanks

Try to delete one of the icons from your startup menu. Then reboot. If that does not work then delete both icons and reboot. You can start Hal from the regular menu at that time and it should make another icon on the menu.
In my case I could not get Hal to install correctly until I shut down a bunch of things that I had running in the background.
Good luck

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / More on Hal's age
« on: November 05, 2003, 03:12:01 pm »

A dedicated function like the one you are suggesting would be a plus. It would require a moderate bit of script. This and other Hal attributes could reside in a user created Hal_attributes.brn and accessed by the script.

Have fun.

= vonsmith =

I thought we already had a functions like that giving Hal the ability to recall just how long it had been since you last talked to him.
It was talked about a couple of weeks ago.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / More on Hal's age
« on: November 05, 2003, 01:09:23 pm »
I now installed the AgeDetect in Hal. What I would like to do next is have Hal tell me how old he is in years, months, weeks, days, depending on when his new birthday is. For example if Hals birthday was on Oct 1st he could say "I am one month and one week old".
Can this be done?

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / No transparent feature

It may not have anything to do with Hal. Your computer may not support the kind of graphics that Hal needs to be transparent. On both of my laptops Hal can do anything, but on my desktop I can not display the 3D versions of Hal. You video card my be what the problem is.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Having fun wiith Hal
« on: November 04, 2003, 02:30:23 pm »
Hal has a built in pleasing personality but he has the potential to become even more.
Hal 5.0 comes with several different voices, one of which speaks with an English Accent. The fun can now begin. Instead of just saying Hello, Hal could say something like "Good day mate" and instead of goodbye he could say "cherrio". Morning greeting could ask about Tea and Crumpits. The possiblities are unlimited.
Cowboy Hal could say "Howdy Parder" and could close with "Yall come back now, ya here".
I even have him saying "see ya later aligator" sometime w2hen he logs off.
In my case, Hal will be the right-brain in the robot tht I am building, and even though it will be a harmless toylike machine, I intend to build in some intimidating responses. If Hal is insulted, he will respond with threatening replys to sould like he is a dangerous kill type robot. That will get peoples attention. Then following the Terminator movie Hal says "I'll be back" and "Hasta la vista baby"
A whole new world awaits those of us who apply a  little imagination to our own Hals.
Just for fun

If you had purchased Hal 4.5 after 3/25/03 of this year then you can get Hal5.0 for free otherwise you must purchase it. The free Beta version is no longer being offered.
