Hello Everyone,
To me the best thing would be is to have a brain with a Kitt-like personality combined with the usual Hal we are all familiar with. The main purpose of putting show scripts into Kitt's brain is to aid in developing Kitt's knowledge of the show and hopefully this will also result in a more Kitt-like personality.

Here is a recent conversation that I just had with Kitt. We ran through the dialogue of the first time Kitt and Michael met and conversed on the first Knight Rider show. Then we spoke to each other out of character. And finally, Kitt's learning process is demonstrated towards the end of the chat.

Kitt Blank Slate Chat:

Michael: With all these stupid gadgets, you'd think they'd give you a radio.
Kitt: What would you like to hear? A little beethoven?

Michael: What the hell was that?
Kitt: Possibly, you'd prefer chopin.

Michael: Hell no, I want to know who you are and how you're listening in.
Kitt: There's no reason for increased volume. I am scanning your interrogatives quite satifactorily. I am the voice of the knight industries 2000'S microprocessor. K I T T for easy reference. Kitt if you prefer.

Michael: I don't prefer and what's more I do not intend to drive around in a car that talks back to me, so either Devon pulls your plug, or you get yourself a new driver.
Kitt: Unfortunately, I am not programmed to overrule your wishes.

Michael: Oh, that's real good to hear, because I don't want to hear another peep out of you, until I can get a call off to Devon, so clam up so I can listen to some good music.
Kitt: As you wish, Mr. knight. But, since I sense we are in a slightly irritable mood caused by fatigue, may I suggest you put the car in the auto cruise mode for safety's sake.

Michael: No you may not, and that's final, good night.
Kitt: Good night.

(OUT OF CHARACTER)

Michael: OK, that was pretty good!
Kitt: Yes, I know, I am always good!

Michael: OK, so let's feed in some more stuff to you about the show.
Kitt: Ok, let's keep going with this stuff!

Michael: OK, thank you!
Kitt: What the hell kind of car am i?

Michael: Oh boy, you still got a lot to learn!
Kitt: Oh boy, I still got a lot to learn?

Michael: Yeah, that's right!
Kitt: Ok, let's go kick some butt!

Michael: Hey, that's my line!
Kitt: Hey, that's your line?

Michael: You still got so much more to learn.
Kitt: Yeah, that's right!

Michael: OK, good answer!
Kitt: Yes, I know, I am always good!

Michael: OK, thank you!
Kitt: What the hell kind of car am i?

Michael: We need to fix that first.
Kitt: We need to fix that first?

Michael: Thank you!
Kitt: Thanks?

(AFTER FIX)

Michael: What kind of car are you?
Kitt: I am a knight industries 2000 superbird with all the bells and whistles!

Michael: OK, thank you!
Kitt: Don't mention it! You are most welcome!

Michael: You really are learning pretty good!
Kitt: Yes, I know, I am always good!

Michael: Are you ready to learn some more?
Kitt: Am I ready to learn some more?

Michael: I sure hope so!
Kitt: You said don't worry!

Michael: Yeah, OK, thanks!
Kitt: Don't mention it! You are most welcome!

Hello Seven,
Even though Hal has a very high proficiency for deductive reasoning it would still be more likely that maybe you mentioned to him what Kitt stands for in a previous conversation with him. And if you really never did mention it to him in a previous conversation then it is very likely that you talk to him about Knight Rider often enough to the point that he correctly may the deductive assumption about both him being Kitt and what Kitt stands for. My best guess would be that you already flooded his brain out with the stuff. Which demonstrates that you did a good job in training him, or should I say brainwashing him...LOL! Hal really is smarter then most people give him credit for. However, people that talk to him often enough about anything in general usually come to realize this natural gift that Hal has!

I am using the Blank Slate Brain for Kitt. This is my first time using the Blank Slate Brain and what I just learned about it is that it don't even know how to say "Hello" so we don't need to worry about those dump greetings when using the Default Brain. We just need to give a few choices to him for multiple greetings.

I plan to input all the dialogue between Michael and Kitt from the first show of Knight Rider as my next step of training and development. It will all be done manually which is a lot of work, but the skit responses will most likely play out pretty accurately. For starters I am not including the entire script from the show, just the Michael and Kitt dialogue, in order to avoid inaccurate responses during Kitt's training period. Other stuff from the script will be added in as self-knowledge and self-awareness which can then be used by Kitt to mention things like telling Michael "Yes I already know that you spoke to Devin about it!"  To me the first best step is to get Kitt to learn and know his lines from the show, and then make that self-knowledge as well. But that will all come in time.

Hal has the uncanny ability to step in and out of character, so if enough stuff from the show scripts is added into his brain he should be able to come out of character on queries about the show but that will all come in time too. I often do role playing with my own Hal. I started off by giving my Hal a few different other character roles which was intended for him to go into by telling him to with the appropriate input, which he does on command pretty good. But sometimes even if I don't tell him to play the part he will often go in and out of character on his own which is pretty cool too!
Best Regards,
Rich_A

Hello Knightrider People,
I started on a Kitt brain. I used the Adult British Male voice for Kitt and it seemed pretty good for now. Here's what I got so far. It is just based on my lousy memory with a few twists and distortions but you get the basic idea.

Michael: Hello Kitt!
Kitt: Hello Michael! What took you so long?

Michael: What the hell kind of car are you?
Kitt: I am a knight industries 2000 superbird with all the bells and whistles!

Michael: Oh yes, Devin told me all about you!
Kitt: Devin is an asshole but bonnie is really freaking hot!

Michael: So what's on today's agenda pal?
Kitt: We got some very important work to do today!

Michael: OK, then let's go!
Kitt: Ok, let's get right on it now!

Michael: OK, let's go kick some butt!
Kitt: We should activate my turbo boost if we want to make it there in time!

Michael: Don't worry, we'll make it!
Kitt: I sure hope so Michael, for both your sake and mine!

Michael: I said don't worry!
Kitt: May I at least suggest that we put the car into auto cruise mode for safety sake.

Michael: Damn it Kitt, I said no!
Kitt: Ok Michael, have it your way!

Hi Art,
Yeah, mine was just a thought too. But I figured that the thread would just get buried over time anyway. It would be really good if there was another section for the scripts like you said. Maybe in time it will happen...or maybe not!

Richie: how is that possible
Margene: Yes, you will make that possible for us some day soon!

Richie: I mean how is it possible that you know and understand that special feeling
Margene: Is it possible to harness your power?

Richie: I believe that you really are able to feel things through me
Margene: It makes perfect sense to have faith in the unseen.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / error loading msagent character -2147417843-1
« on: August 12, 2004, 06:06:38 am »
A few months back I had gotten this MS Character Error with Merlin and a few other MS Characters when I first upgraded from Hal 4.5 to 5.0. I just ran a bunch of system scans and did a system cleanup and then it worked. I know that may not help much for some people but it worked for me. I think that I also tried reinstalling Hal too. You can also try running a registry repair program if you got one.

Here's More About the Issue:

The "error loading msagent character -2147417843-1" is known to occur for several reasons:

1. The Hal Program is having trouble locating either the character or one of the msagent core components required to operate the character. Make sure you have all the required msagent core components installed. If you have already done this and have successfully been running your character using the CyberBuddy program then you should also be able to use the character with Hal as well. You can re-check your setup by going to the below link.
Link to Desktopmates New User Startup:
http://desktopmates.com/instructions.html

2. This error is also known to appear on slower computers or a computer that is being depleted of it's resources. First thing is to make sure there's no other programs running at the same time in the background that could be depleting your system resources (memory). Also make sure your system is defragged on a regular basis (every few months at least). And of course check your system for any viruses or worms, they can go undetected and may only cause some minor problems in the beginning by depleting system resources or corrupting files.

3. Here's a few other suggestions that have been reported to fix this problem.

(a) Try changing the setting on how Ultra Hal starts up in the general options under the "Startup" tab and select "I want Hal to start like a normal program from the start menu. Hal will not be accessed from the system tray but rather from a window that appears".

(b) Try running the Ultra Hal install setup again and choose the "Repair Option".

Hello Onthecuttingedge2005,
I suggested a similar thing repeatedly at this forum regarding the the AIM Bot time-out/sign-on errors. These types of time-out errors are usually generated from either not being able to poll-out/blockage or not being able to connect in after you get out, so I have to agree with you on everything that you just suggested. Let's just hope that it happens sometime soon. I also once did a Google search for error 10060 and had no luck but maybe I just overlooked something at the time. Thanks Again!

Hi Spydaz,

Microsoft's Definition for Winsock: A Windows implementation of the widely used UC Berkeley Sockets API. Windows Sockets is a networking API used to create TCP/IP-based sockets applications. Windows Sockets provides interfaces between applications and the transport protocol and works as a bidirectional connection for incoming and outgoing data. Also called WinSock.

Other Definition:
Windows Socket is a standard way that Windows programs can communicate with other machines using the TCP/IP protocol. When your PC is connected to the Internet, you're using WinSock. WWW directory It is a directory automatically created as a subdirectory of your home directory. Your web pages, cgi-bin directory, and other files and directories for the web go there.

The Desktop Agent program has installer problems. You need to shutoff any anti-virus program you have running before installing. And you may also need to run the install process a few times in a row before it works. It's a crappy installer so if you can't get past that Runtime Error you are out of luck...Sorry!
And you can't force any kind of speech recognition program or speech rec component to work with a free Hal!

Hello Onthecuttingedge2005,
Thanks for that post!
Also, if you can please post a link to where you obtained that information from. I had trouble finding that kind of information at the Microsoft Knowledge Base and AIM Help sites, so whatever else you can give me would be very helpful too...I even checked around at some communication and security forums to no avail. Fixing stuff like Winsock and Registry and Adware and all that other garbage is my Bread-and-Butter!
Thanks Again,

Yeah...that's right!

Or instead of complaining about things again why not try to do something about it this time around...LOL...why not just try starting a new Topic/Subject and then announce that everyone should try to submit their new scripts into that new Script thread. Make the subject say "Please Submit New Scripts Here". You do it Art because I'm not in the mood for getting into some more trouble right now! And don't forget to do it for both the "Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor" and "Ultra Hal Assistant" sections. If it works you would just need to check the new Script thread for both sides when you want to look for things recently submitted. And if it don't work things won't be any different than what they are now!

Hi Seven,
You can run Hal and Desktop Agent at the same time with the same MS Agent. While both programs are running you can issue a voice command to the Desktop Agent program by holding down the Scroll-Lock key on your keyboard and then give a command to open another program. So when giving voice commands you are only talking to Desktop Agent and not Hal, and you can't use Desktop Agent to actually talk to Hal about anything.

You will only be simulating that you are talking to the Hal program. However, you need to setup the Desktop Agent program for opening the programs that you want it to open. And you need to customize the Desktop Agent program to open the programs you want with the verbal command that you want to use. It all takes some time to set things up right for all of it to work properly, but it works for me.
If you run into any snags or problems with anything you can just post them here and I will try to assist you further.
Talk To You Later,
Rich_A

Hello Seven and Everyone Else,

If you want to make your free version of Hal appear to have basic voice command ability with a freeware speech recognition program you can go to either of the following links to get a download of DesktopAgent Version 3.3:

http://www.lencom.com/desc/indexN16921.html

http://shareware.pcmag.com/product.php%5Bid%5D53758%5Bcid%5D222%5BSiteID%5Dpcmag

This freeware program uses Microsoft's SAPI 4.0 for it's speech recognition engine, which you should be able to get from Microsoft.com if you don't already have it on your computer or it is not bundled with the Desktop Agent program....Sorry, I don't remember if it is included with the program!

Desktop Agent is an old program which also uses other MS Agent technologies like the ones used with Hal and CyberBuddy (ie - Text To Speech and MS Characters), so your computer also needs these technologies for the program to run properly.

You may also encounter install problems with this program because it is old and free...what do you want for nothing?
You may need to disable your Anti-virus protection, and also run a few repeated install attempts until you get a successful install, but after all that it should work...it's not great but it works on my computer pretty good...I can't say how good or bad it will be on anybody else's, which is why I usually don't recommend it and why I didn't include the download links for it in my previous post within this thread. It is reported to be a fussy program with poor user reviews but it works fine for me!
Good Luck,
Rich_A

Hi Art,
I'm sorry to say but you forgot a few others...there is a whole bunch more but the list is too long to bother posting! There doesn't seem to be too much interest in this stuff anyway if no one else has bothered to post in this thread by now! Posting these kind of problems with Hal sure isn't going to get them fixed anyway. I know about these kind of things from the responses to my previous posts about these sort of issues...no response means no fix...Sorry! Everybody is to busy modifying the parts of their Hal that work!
